The Airbus A340 is a long-range, wide-body passenger airliner that was developed and produced by Airbus. In the mid-1970s, Airbus conceived several derivatives of the A300, its first airliner, and developed the A340 quadjet in parallel with the A330 twinjet. In June 1987, Airbus launched both designs with their first orders and the A340-300 took its maiden flight on 25 October 1991. It was certified along with the A340-200 on 22 December 1992 and both versions entered service in March 1993 with launch customers Lufthansa and Air France. The larger A340-500/600 were launched on 8 December 1997; the A340-600 flew for the first time on 23 April 2001 and entered service on 1 August 2002.

SriLankan Airlines is the flag carrier of Sri Lanka and a member airline of the Oneworld airline alliance. It operated worldwide holiday charter services mainly for its parent company, the MyTravel Group. The airline merged with Thomas Cook Airlines UK Limited in 2008 and was renamed Thomas Cook Airlines Limited.

A twinjet or twin-engine jet is a jet aircraft powered by two engines. A twinjet is able to fly well enough to land with a single working engine, making it safer than a single-engine aircraft in the event of failure of an engine. Fuel efficiency of a twinjet is better than that of aircraft with more engines. These considerations have led to the widespread use of aircraft of all types with twin engines, including airliners, fixed-wing military aircraft, and others.
American Airlines Flight 1572 was a flight from Chicago O'Hare International Airport to Bradley International Airport on November 12, 1995. The McDonnell Douglas MD-83 struck trees and an instrument landing system (ILS) antenna during landing, causing $9 million in damage to the aircraft.

Star Airways was an airline based in Tirana, Albania. It was founded by several Albanian and Italian investors in 2008, and obtained its operating license in June 2009. On April 3, 2010, Star Airways received its first aircraft, an Airbus A320. Its second A320 arrived in May of the same year. The airline ceased all operations in September 2010.
Michael Etiang is a Ugandan airline pilot and business executive, who served as the Chief Pilot of Uganda Airlines, the revived national airline of Uganda, from April 2019. until November 2022. He also concurrently serves as Captain at Uganda Airlines, on both the CRJ900-ER and the A330-841 equipment.
Vanita Kayiwa, is a Ugandan airline transport pilot, who serves as a first officer at Uganda National Airlines Company, Uganda's national carrier airline, on the A330-841 aircraft, since February 2021. Before that, effective April 2019, she served as a first officer on the CRJ 900 equipment, at the same airline.
Tina Drazu is a Ugandan airline transport pilot, who serves as a First Officer at Uganda National Airlines Company, Uganda's national carrier airline, on the A330-841 equipment, since February 2021. Before that, since April 2019, she is a first officer on the CRJ 900 aircraft, at the same airline. As of October 2023 she was one of the only two female first officers on the A330-841 equipment at the airline.
Uganda Airlines is the flag carrier of Uganda. The company is a revival of the older Uganda Airlines which operated from 1977 until 2001. The current carrier began flying in August 2019.
Robert Bwayo Wakhweya is a Ugandan airline pilot, who serves as the Chief Pilot of Uganda Airlines, the revived national airline of Uganda, effective March 2023. He concurrently serves as a Captain on the A330-800neo equipment at the airline. He has worked with Uganda Airlines since November 2020.
