The Rajputs in Kumaon also known as Kumaoni Rajput are members of the Rajput community who held considerable power in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand from around the 4th century until the conquest of Kumaon by the Gorkha. [1]
The Kumaoni Rajput, also referred to as Thakur, Rajput or Kshetri, are a small community which includes all immigrants of Kshatriya varna who wielded considerable power both political and economic, from around the fourth century till the conquest of Kumaon by the Gorkha.
Pal or Rajwar of Askot, Gaida, Kalakoti, Karki and Dhapola are the major clans of Suryavanshi Rajputs. Chandravanshi Rajputs include descendants of the Chand dynasty such as Rautela of Sor, Kota, Dhaniakot, and Fadtyal of Kali Kumaon. They are the main Rajput clans of Kumaon.
