Kunthala Jayaraman, an Indian biotechnologist, is often regarded as the 'Mother of Industrial Biotechnology Education in the world'. Jayaraman, often referred to as KJ, is credited with establishing a harmonious balance among science, engineering, and technology at Anna University, in the field of industrial biotechnology. [1]

Education

Jayaraman earned a degree in biochemistry at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. [2]

Career

Jayaraman was faculty in the School of Biological Sciences (SBS) of the Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU). [2] She along with her associate were the first discoverers of larvicidal toxin producing gene in Bacillus sphaericus in 1984, which was a major breakthrough in conquering mosquito larvae using new biopesticide. Four years later, the discovery of another toxic protein producing gene by her team became a milestone in developing Biocide-S, an environmentally safe biotechnological toxin efficient in killing mosquito larvae, at Centre for Biotechnology (CBT) in Anna University. [3] While at MKU, she was the instrumental to conduct the WHO Conference and International Training Programme. In MKU, she was mentored and inspired by S. Ramachandran, along with Kuppamuthu Dharmalingam, to write text books in biotechnology. [4] In 2022, in the honour of Dr. Kunthala Jayaraman, The Academy of Sciences of Chennai conducted Kunthala Jayaraman Distinguished Lecture on “Disruptive reform in higher education and translational research” and it was delivered by Prof. Dr. P. Kaliraj, Professor of Eminence, Anna University and Former Vice-Chancellor, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. [5]

V. S. Chandralekha is an Indian politician and former civil servant, who was the President of the Tamil Nadu state unit of the Janata Party, which merged into the Bharatiya Janata Party on 11 August 2013. Ramamirtha Jayaraman was an Indian geneticist, known for his studies on bacteria, especially on Escherichia coli. His researches on the control of transcription of bacteria are known to have evidenced the participation of accessory factors in transcription and their interactions with RNA polymerase. He was a professor at the Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) and a former scientist at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. Post his retirement, he served as an emeritus scientist at MKU. He authored the reference manual, Jayaraman Laboratory Manual in Molecular Genetics and several pamphlets and articles; PubMed, an online repository of medical papers has listed 59 of them. Thavamani Jegajothivel Pandian, a retired professor of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU), is an Indian geneticist and ecologist, known for his pioneering studies in bioenergetics and animal ecology. A recipient of the WorldFish Naga Award, he is a former chairman of the Task Force Committee on Aqua and Marine Biotechnology of the Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India, a former president and a fellow of The World Academy of Sciences and an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, National Academy of Sciences, India, Indian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Kuppamuthu Dharmalingam is an Indian proteomicist, geneticist, academic and the founder of Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics at Madurai Kamaraj University. He is known for his contributions in the fields of eye disease proteomics and mutagenic DNA repair in Escherichia coli. He is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, India. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 1992, for his contributions to biological sciences.

S. Ramachandran was an Indian scientist responsible for the setting of the Department of Biotechnology under the Government of India. He became the first secretary to the department in 1986. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2011, the third highest civilian award given by the Government of India, for his contributions to Indian science. The DBT has initiated an annual S. Ramachandran Lecture series in homage to its founder. He has mentored many eminent scientists in various premier Indian institutes including Indian Institute of Science, Madurai Kamaraj University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, University of Pune, University of Delhi, University of Hyderabad, Anna University, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology and Institute of Microbial Technology.

M. Rajendran served as Vice-Chancellor of Tamil University, Thanjavur, in Tamil Nadu, India. He is a Tamil Scholar, Writer and Publisher of Kanaiyazhi literary magazine in Tamil., He was the coordinator of academic committee, World Classical Tamil Conference 2010. He chaired the High Level Committee to amend the Tamil Nadu Public Library Act and Tamil Nadu Public Library Rules, which was constituted by the Government of Tamil Nadu in January 2022. Kalingar Mu. Karunanidhi Classic Tamil Award, Muthamilkavalar Ki.Aa.Be. Vishwanatham Award has been given to him.

Madurai Metro, is a proposed rapid transit system for Madurai, Tamil Nadu. It arose from a Madurai Metrolite system, part of a major expansion of public transport in the city and one of the projects devised by the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J.Jayalalithaa.

R. M. Pitchappan or Ramasamy Pitchappan, Ph.D., F.A.Sc., F.A.M.S., is an Indian biologist known for his studies on immunogenetics and infectious diseases. He was a professor in the School of Biological Sciences (SBS) of the Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU). In addition, Pitchappan held the positions of director, Educational Medical Research Centre, director-research, Chettinad University, Chennai, and adjunct professor, ICMR Andaman Nicobar Islands. He also held the position of the vice-president of the Nilgiri Adivasi Welfare Association in Kotagiri, Nilgiris, and as an advisor to the ancient DNA programme of Government of Tamil Nadu.

Karuppannan Veluthambi is an Indian molecular biologist, plant biotechnologist and a former Professor and INSA-Senior Scientist at the School of Biotechnology (SBT) of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU).

Sankar Natesan is an Indian biologist and a professor at the Department of Genetic Engineering of School of Biotechnology, Madurai Kamaraj University. His major research area is molecular cardiology. He also served as the Registrar in charge of the University.

A. Gnanam was an educationist who served as the second Vice-Chancellor of Pondicherry University from 1991 to 2007.
