La Serena is a comarca located in the east of province of Badajoz, Extremadura, Spain. The main town is Castuera.
It is a comarca based on a natural region which includes plains, as well as some low ranges of the Sierra Morena. The climate is continental, with strong fluctuations.
It grows fine grass grazed by merino sheep that produce a renowned wool and whose milk yields a well known cheese denominated La Serena cheese, which is a protected product by its origin.
The population of the territory is around 39,000 inhabitants.

Queso de La Serena is a cheese made from Merino sheep milk in the comarca (district) of La Serena, in Extremadura, Spain. The pure sheep milk is curdled using a coagulant found in the pistils of cardoon. This ingredient lends a light bitterness to the otherwise slightly salty taste. It is aged for at least sixty days. When the cheese has a creamy consistency in the centre, it is traditionally eaten by slicing off the top and scooping out the inside with a spoon, and it is known as Torta de la Serena. If it is allowed to mature further it becomes harder, develops a stronger taste and is known as Queso de la Serena.

The Puerto Hurraco massacre was a mass murder that occurred on the afternoon of Sunday, 26 August 1990 in Puerto Hurraco, a village in Benquerencia de la Serena, municipality in the Province of Badajoz,. It has 135 inhabitants. The perpetrators were the brothers, Emilio and Antonio Izquierdo, members of the "Izquierdo family", who murdered 9 people in the streets of their hometown, some of them belonged to their rivals, the "Cabanillas family", and caused serious injuries to 12 others. The two then fled, but they were arrested during the next morning and eventually sentenced each to 684 years in prison. They died in prison, aged 72 and 74.
Payoyo cheese is a type of cheese made from the milk of Payoya goats and Merina grazalemeña sheep in Villaluenga del Rosario and other areas of the Sierra de Grazalema, Spain.
