Laine Erik (married name Kallas; born 21 April 1942) is an Estonian agricultural scientist and a retired middle-distance runner.
Erik specialized in the 800 metres. In this event she finished sixth at the 1964 Olympics, while at the 1968 Games she was eliminated in semifinals. [2] She won the Soviet titles in 1964, 1967 and 1968. In 1965 she won a gold medal at the Summer Universiade, and in 1964 she was part of the Soviet 3×800 m team that set a world record. [3]
She graduated from the Zootechnics Faculty of Estonian Agricultural Academy in 1969 and in 1984 defended a PhD in agricultural sciences. Between 1969 and 1996 she worked as a researcher at the Institute of Animal Science of Estonian Agricultural University, [3] and after that as a company manager.
Ants Antson was an Estonian speed skater who competed for the Soviet Union.
Heino Puuste is a retired Estonian javelin thrower who represented the USSR and later Estonia. He finished fourth at both the 1980 Summer Olympics and the 1983 World Championships, and won a silver medal at the 1982 European Championships. He also won bronze medals at the Universiade in 1979 and 1981. On 6 May 1983 he threw at Birmingham a new Soviet record of 94.20 meters, eclipsing the old mark of 93.80 by Jānis Lūsis. This record was never beaten as increasing distances and frequent flat or ambiguous landings prompted a change to a new javelin design, effective starting in 1986. Puuste later became an athletics coach, most notably coaching the 2005 javelin throw world champion Andrus Värnik.
Jüri Lossmann was an Estonian long distance runner. He finished second in the marathon at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, at 2:32:48.6, trailing Hannes Kolehmainen by 13 seconds, but beating the third-placed Valerio Arri by almost 4 minutes. At the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris he was the flag bearer for Estonia and finished tenth in the marathon.
Bruno Junk was an Estonian race walker. He competed for the Soviet Union at the 1952 and 1956 Olympics and won bronze medals on both occasions. He set a world record in the 15 km in 1951 (1:08:08.0), and had world's best times in the 20 km in 1956 (1:30:00.8) and in the 3 km in 1952 (11:51.4). Domestically he won four Soviet titles: in 1951 and 1956 in the 20 km, and in 1952 and 1953 in the 10 km, and eight Estonian titles: in 1949–50 and 1956–59 in the 20 km, in 1958 in the 10 km, and in 1959 in the 30 km.
Tiit Sokk is a retired Estonian professional basketball player and current coach. Often cited as one of the very best European point guards of his generation, he is widely recognized as the greatest Estonian basketball player in history. Elected to the Hall of fame of Estonian basketball in 2010.
Jaan Talts is a former Estonian weightlifter. He competed for the Soviet Union at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics and won a silver and a gold medal, respectively. Throughout his career, Talts won two world and four European titles and set approximately 40 world records.
Anatoli Krikun is a retired Estonian professional basketball player, who competed for the Soviet Union.
Oksana Ivanovna Yermakova is an Estonian and Russian épée fencer.
Tamara Mikhaylovna Sosnova was a Soviet freestyle swimmer who won two medals at the 1966 European Aquatics Championships. She also competed in the 1968 Summer Olympics but did not reach the finals. Between 1964 and 1968 she won 10 national championships and set 21 national records in 100 m (1), 200 m (4), 400 m (8), 800 m (3), 1500 m (1) and freestyle relays (4).
Elina Partõka is an Estonian former swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle events. She is a three-time Olympian, and a daughter of Valentin Partyka, who competed in both 200 and 400 m individual medley at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, representing the Soviet Union.
Jelena Petrova is an Estonian former swimmer, who specialized in long-distance freestyle events. She is a 19-time Estonian long-course swimming champion, 11-time short-course swimming champion and a three-time Nordic junior champion.
Nikolay Poljakov is a Soviet sailor. He won the silver medal in Soling in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow along with Alexandr Budnikov and Boris Budnikov.
Valentina Vladimirovna Cherkasova is a Soviet sport shooter. She won the Bronze medal in the 50 m rifle 3 pos in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.
Mari Kinsigo, was an Estonian chess player who received the title of Woman FIDE Master (WFM) in 1993.
