Lake Palmer was a man-made lake in Nashville between 16th Ave and 17th Ave, south of Hayes St and north of West End Ave. [4] This was the proposed location of a long-mooted mixed-use construction project near downtown Nashville that failed to materialize for over ten years. [5] Conceived by Nashville-based Alex S. Palmer & Company, the project was originally planned to open in 2007 as the West End Summit, a $300 million project for office space and apartments.
Excavation initially started in 2005, but the project stalled as the developer attempted to cope with the credit crunch and sought an anchor tenant for the office portion of the project. [6] The resulting lake was a source of water for swimming pools and country clubs during water restrictions following the 2010 Tennessee floods. [7] The construction proposal was relaunched in September, 2012 with news that Nashville-headquartered Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) had signed leases to occupy two office towers on the site. In addition to the office towers, an InterContinental Hotel was planned as part of the development. After plans stalled, the property was sold to Propst Development in March, 2018. [7]
The site remained a massive, block-long excavation that was commonly called Lake Palmer, as this 85-foot-deep (26 m) hole was mostly filled with water. [8] As of September 2019, the lake was still visible on Google Maps and labelled as Lake Palmer. [9]
On September 27, 2012, Nashville Mayor Karl Dean, Gov. Bill Haslam, and HCA Chairman and CEO Richard Bracken, jointly announced the location of two corporate headquarters divisions of HCA at the site. [10] The proposed development was to include two towers of approximately 20 stories each, with a total floor area of 900,000 sq ft (84,000 m2). The corporate headquarters of Parallon Business Solutions would anchor one tower, and the other would be anchored by Sarah Cannon Research Institute (SCRI). The rainwater was completely drained (mostly into the street) in 2013 for the anticipated construction of the HCA building.
More than a year after HCA signed leases, construction had failed to start due to Alex S. Palmer & Company being unable to obtain equity financing for the $275 million project. In December 2013, HCA withdrew from the project, opting to build its own campus on a nearby site in Nashville's North Gulch district. The excavation filled back up with water.
Intercontinental Hotels withdrew their 12-story hotel proposal in February 2016. [11] The lake was again temporarily drained in March 2016, although no further proposal was revealed. [12]
The failed West End Summit project, along with developer Alex S. Palmer & Company, faced public and media scrutiny because of its numerous construction delays, financing woes and construction liens. [13] Harmon Inc. filed a lawsuit stating it was owed US$120,000 by Alex S. Palmer & Company and Bovis Lend Lease for engineering services related to the project. [14]
On March 23, 2018, Huntsville, Alabama-based Propst Development announced they had purchased Lake Palmer for $36.9 million. [15] [16] The announcement did not include detailed plans for the site. [17] Propst Development principal Chris Brown stated on June 27, 2018, that the mixed-use project would include a hotel and condos in a tower as high as 40 stories, and that another tower would include at least 500,000 sq ft (46,000 m2) of office space. Turner Construction Company returned jointly with Hoar Construction as contractors, and Cooper Carry was named as the firm providing architecture for the renamed "Broadwest" project. [3] On August 20, 2018, Brown told the Nashville Business Journal that the residential tower would be 34 stories and the office tower would be 21 stories, with a projected cost of $490 million entirely funded by the Propst family and Chartwell Hospitality, a hotel operator based in Franklin, Tennessee. The hotel in the residential tower would open in 2021 with 245 rooms, and be owner-operated by Chartwell Hospitality. [18] The plan included a park, and 2,500 vehicle parking spaces. Construction was expected to start in the fall of 2018. [19]
The first of four tower cranes was erected in March 2019. The 21-story office tower is planned to open in February 2021, and the 34-story residential tower is planned to open about six months later. [20]
Antioch is a neighborhood of Nashville approximately 12 miles southeast of Downtown Nashville. It is served by the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County.
The Chicago Spire was a skyscraper project in Chicago that was partially built between 2007 and 2008 before being cancelled. Located at 400 N. Lake Shore Drive, it would have stood 2,000 feet (610 m) high with 150 floors and been the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. When originally proposed as the Fordham Spire in July 2005, the design had 116 stories, included a hotel and condominiums, and was topped with a broadcast antenna mast. The building was designed and spearheaded by Spanish architect-engineer Santiago Calatrava and Chicago developer Christopher T. Carley of the Fordham Company. On March 16, 2006, the Chicago Plan Commission unanimously approved the initial design of the building. On November 4, 2014, a court ruling brought the original development plan and the extended litigation over the nine-year-old project to a close. Developer Garrett Kelleher signed over the property location to the project's biggest creditor, Related Midwest, who announced that they would not build the Spire and released their plans for the site.
Panorama Tower is a mixed-use 85-story skyscraper in Miami, Florida, United States. It is located in the Brickell district of Downtown Miami. It was originally approved by the City of Miami and the Federal Aviation Administration in 2006 but was put on hold due to the Great Recession. The project was revived in 2012 when owner Tibor Hollo hired Moshe Cosicher, AIA Architect, to redesign the project. In 2013, the project was revised; the 868-foot (265 m) tower is stated to include residential, hotel, retail, and office space. It is the tallest building in Miami, and the tallest building in Florida, but may soon thereafter be overtaken by various other towers, including two of their own projects. It took over the Four Seasons Hotel Miami as tallest when it topped out in late 2017. The project is the first development in the City of Miami to be funded in part by EB-5 visas. While the entire site was technically addressed 1101 Brickell Avenue, the building is actually located on the back of the lot, behind two existing office buildings, at 1100 Brickell Bay Drive. It is about two blocks from the Tenth Street Metromover station.
Brickell City Centre is a $1.05 billion shopping and mixed-use project in Miami, Florida. When finished, it will span up to five blocks to the west of Brickell Avenue and to the south of the Miami River, in the Brickell district of Greater Downtown. It will be anchored by a 107,000 square-foot Saks Fifth Avenue, Cinemex, and Italian food hall. The project is located between 7th and 8th Streets on both sides of South Miami Avenue and east of South Miami Ave on the north side of 7th Street. Additionally, it may expand to develop two more blocks that Swire already owns at 700 Brickell Avenue and SE 6 Street.
Trump Tower Tampa was the name of an unfinished condominium project located in downtown Tampa, Florida, which was planned to be the tallest building in the city. Developed in a partnership between Donald Trump and SIMDAG, a Tampa-based development company, construction of the towers was never started due to the economic collapse of the real estate market. Located at the northwest corner of West Brorein St. and South Ashley Avenue, the building would have been visible from the end of Bayshore Boulevard and Tampa General Hospital on the Hillsborough River waterline.
The Renaissance Nashville Hotel is a hotel in Nashville, Tennessee. The building is 385 feet high with 31 floors. The hotel was physically connected to the Nashville Convention Center until the demolition of the convention center in June 2017. Construction began on the 5th + Broadway complex at the location of the former convention center in early 2018, and the Renaissance Hotel will be located at the northwest corner of that development. The 5th + Broadway complex has a predicted completion date of spring 2020.
Hyatt Regency Seattle, also known as 808 Howell Street and 8th & Howell, is a high-rise hotel in the Denny Triangle neighborhood of Seattle, Washington that opened in December 2018. The 45-story hotel, operated by Hyatt, has 1,260 hotel rooms and is the largest in the city. It also has 103,000 square feet (9,600 m2) of meeting and event space, as well as two ballrooms and a lounge.
2nd & Pike, also known as the West Edge Tower, is a 440-foot-tall (130 m) residential skyscraper in Seattle, Washington. The 39-story tower, developed by Urban Visions and designed by Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig Architects, has 339 luxury apartments and several ground-level retail spaces. The 8th floor includes a Medical One primary care clinic.

River Landing Village is a mixed-use development under construction in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada consisting of 3 high rises. Located on the southern tip of downtown between the Victoria and Idylwyld bridge, the site has long been the most expensive and most sought for pieces of real estate in Saskatoon. Victory Majors Investments Corporation has been overseeing the project. This development has gone through significant changes and went through 2 different developers over a span of 10 years.
Wolf Point South Tower is the tallest of three planned buildings to be developed in the Near North Side community area on the Wolf Point property at a fork in the Chicago River in downtown Chicago. The building was originally planned to be 950 feet (289.56 m) tall. However, in late 2018, the naming rights were sold for a redesigned shorter tower of 813 feet (248 m).
Sandhurst Las Vegas is a cancelled high-rise condominium and mixed-use project that was planned for construction in downtown Las Vegas. The project was announced in October 2004, with the New Jersey-based Sandhurst Development as the developer. The project was designed by JMA Architecture and was to include a 35-story tower with 398 units. Two additional towers were also planned early in the project's history.
Hudson Yards is a 28-acre (11 ha) real estate development in the Chelsea and Hudson Yards neighborhoods of Manhattan, New York City. Upon completion, 13 of the 16 planned structures on the West Side of Midtown South would sit on a platform built over the West Side Yard, a storage yard for Long Island Rail Road trains. The first of its two phases, opened in 2019, comprises a public green space and eight structures that contain residences, a hotel, office buildings, a mall, and a cultural facility. The second phase, on which construction has not started as of 2020, will include residential space, an office building, and a school.
The Fifth is a skyscraper under construction in Des Moines, Iowa. Developed by Mandelbaum Properties, upon completion in 2022, it will be the second tallest building in Iowa. The building will consist of a movie theater, hotel, parking garage, retail, and residential space. Construction started in late 2018 and is expected to finish at the end of 2022.
Bellevue 600 is a proposed high-rise office building developed by Amazon in Bellevue, Washington, United States. Once completed in 2024, the 43-story, 600-foot-tall (180 m) building would tie to be the tallest building in Bellevue with the nearby 555 Tower, currently under construction and scheduled for a 2023 completion. The project is located in Downtown Bellevue at the intersection of Northeast 6th Street and 110th Avenue Northeast, adjacent to the Bellevue Transit Center and a future Link light rail station. A potential second phase would construct a 33-story tower to the west, replacing an existing office building.
1105 West Peachtree is a mixed-use development currently under construction in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. Located along West Peachtree Street in Midtown Atlanta, the development would consist primarily of a 32-story office building and a smaller residential tower called 40 West 12th.
