Lake Tilden, also considered part of nearby Black Lake , [3] is a natural freshwater lake on the west side of Orlando, Florida, in Orange County, Florida. This lake, with some swampy shores, meets Black Lake on its northwest side. To the south side of the lake is Florida State Road 429, a toll highway. Residential housing developments are on the southwest and north sides of the lake. The entire lake is surrounded by private property, so there is no public access to this lake.

Water Quality

The water quality in Lake Tilden is very stable. Dating back to September 1, 1971, there have been approximately 7,082 water samples collected from Lake Tilden with samples ranging on a scale from 0 (highest quality) to 100 (lowest quality). [3] The current water quality of Lake Tilden is 54 and has ranged from 38 to 65 since the first sample was collected in 1971. [3] The limiting nutrient in Lake Tilden is phosphorus. The lake contains nitrogen, another nutrient required by plant life, and chlorophyll, which is a measure of algae abundance. [3] Water clarity is also another feature of Lake Tilden with the latest Secchi disk reading being 1.97 feet (0.60 m) with a historic range of 0.33 to 12 feet (0.10 to 3.66 m). [3]

Wildlife

Lake Tilden is home to many of Central Florida's native species that resides in and around the shores of lakes. One of the most common species found in Lake Tilden is the Largemouth Bass, a common freshwater sport fishing species. Residents of the area rave about the tremendous fishing the lake has when it comes to Catfish, Tilapia, and Bass.

Size

Comparative to Lakes in the area Lake Tilden is quite small with only having a surface area of about 40 acres. The lakes average depth is 10ft but its deepest point is 36ft down. This depth allows for many different species of wildlife and vegetation to strive in Lake Tilden.

Location

Lake Tilden is located at 28.5199° N, 81.5932° W, it is approximately 12 miles west-southwest of downtown Orlando [3] .The area that surrounds Lake Tilden is very industrialized with many neighborhoods and shopping centers surrounding the area. Winter Garden Regional shopping center as well as Winter Garden Regal are two huge shopping centers that are within 2.5 miles of Lake Tilden. As well as shopping centers, Windsor Park Golf Club is within 2 miles of the lake. [3] These developments raise concern for the future of the water quality in Lake Tilden due to the massive amounts of pesticides that golf courses use to fertilize the land as well as the pollution that comes from massive shopping malls. The water quality in Lake Tilden, as mentioned above, is very good, so we can hope that the risk of pollution is low.

Two blocks from its northeast shore is a WalMart supercenter and just north of that is Cypress Gardens Boulevard. On its north-northwest side is a gated residential community. To its west is Lake Ruby. The two lakes are separated by a 40 feet (12 m) strip of land. On its south-southwest shore are residential developments. On its southeast is pastureland. On its east-northeast shore are two country clubs and mobile homes.

Lake Silver is a natural freshwater lake located in central Winter Haven, Florida. This lake has a 51.73-acre (209,300 m2) surface area and is completely surrounded by offices, clinics and residential areas. The lake, almost circular in shape, is surrounded on three sides by North and South Lake Silver Drive. Lake Silver Drive on the east side is also part of 1st Street North. Lake Silver is surrounded by public land on all but its south and northwest shores. On the east side, 1st Street is only about 10 feet (3.0 m) away. On the north, North Lake Silver Drive is about 20 feet (6.1 m) away. On the entire west and southwest sides is parkland. Directly across 1st Street, to the southeast, is the Winter Haven Hospital campus. Beyond the housing to the south and across South Lake Silver Drive is the main campus of Gessler Clinic.

Lake Conine is a natural freshwater lake on the north side of Winter Haven, Florida. The lake is not within the city limits, but is almost entirely surrounded by the city of Winter Haven. Lake Conine is almost as often called Lake Connie as it is called Lake Conine. In fact, the Fishing Works website site has two listings calling this lake the former name and one calling it the latter. Lake Conine is bounded on the north and southwest by residential areas. On the west and southeast are woods. On the east the lake is bordered by SR 544. Lake Conine has a 237-acre (960,000 m2) surface area and it is shaped somewhat like a teardrop.

Lake Moody

Lake Moody is a natural freshwater lake with a 409-acre (1,660,000 m2) surface area. Shaped somewhat like a flint arrowhead, Lake Moody is in an area of sparse residential development. A scattering of residences, as well as citrus groves, are on the south side of the lake along South Lake Moody Road. On the west side the lake is bordered by the Scenic Route of Highway 17. A few residences line the west side of the highway and the shore on west side is all private property. Most of the area along the highway is bordered by citrus groves. North Lake Moody Road borders the northwest part of the lake. The shore borders much of the road right-of-way on this road. Lake Moody is bordered on the northeast by citrus groves and some swampy areas of ground. A railroad line, more swamp and citrus groves line the east shore.

Padgett Lake is a natural freshwater lake of irregular shape on the north side of Lake Wales, Florida. It has a 15.94-acre (64,500 m2) surface area. Most of the shore of this lake is a bit swampy 5 feet (1.5 m) to 10 feet (3.0 m) out into the water. Much of the shore is bordered by woods. On the northeast corner is a motel and on the southwest corner is a former motel that has been converted to apartments. A bit south of the lake and to the west of the former motel runs Mountain Lake Cutoff Road.

The Twin Lakes of Lake Wales, Florida, are two small natural freshwater lakes on the south side of the city. Sometimes they are simply called Twin Lakes, but sometimes they are individually called Twin Lake West and Twin Lake East. All shores of Twin Lake West are swampy, as is the area between the two lakes. The west shore of Twin Lake East is swampy. Panther Lake is a natural freshwater lake on the north side of Walt Disney World, in Orange County, Florida. In fact, a small part of the lake is within the boundaries of Walt Disney World. This lake originally had an irregular shape and today parts of the lake are filled in, because of encroaching development. On the west side of the lake is Florida State Road 429, a toll highway. On the south, east and northeast is Watermark Winter Garden, a large housing development. On most of the rest of the north is Orange County National Golf Center and Lodge.

Some residential areas are now bordering it.

Lake Hancock is a swampy natural freshwater lake on the west side of Orlando, Florida, in Orange County, Florida. This lake is long and winding. To the west side of the lake is Florida State Road 429, a toll highway. Residential housing surrounds all, but the east end of the lake.

Lake Hartley is a natural freshwater lake on the west side of Orlando, Florida, in Orange County, Florida. This lake, with some swampy shore areas, is long and winding. To the west side of the lake is Florida State Road 429, a toll highway. Residential housing, a private school and a retail area border parts of the lake. Citrus groves also border parts of it. The entire lake is surrounded by private property, so there is no public access to this lake.

Black Lake, connected to nearby Lake Tilden, is a 233 acre natural freshwater lake on the west side of Orlando, Florida, in Orange County, Florida. This lake, with some swampy shores, meets Black Lake on its northwest side. To the south side of the lake is Florida State Road 429, a toll highway. Residential housing developments are on the southwest and north sides of the lake. The entire lake is surrounded by private property, so there is no public access to this lake.

Lake Roberts, just south of Florida State Road 429, is a natural freshwater lake on the west side of Orlando, Florida, in Orange County, Florida. This lake is almost entirely surrounded by residential housing. It has a swampy area on its northeast and the only public access is along a short stretch of McKinnon Road that runs along a very small part of the southeast shore of the lake. As that stretch is brushy it would probably even be unsuitable for fishing.

Fischer Lake, just southeast of Florida State Road 429, is a natural freshwater lake west of Orlando, Florida, in Orange County, Florida. This lake is partially surrounded by residential housing and Camp Ithiel is on its southwest shore. Most of its shores are swampy. It is listed in the Orange County Wateratlas as a private lake and there is no public access along its shores.

Lake Sherwood, just southeast of Florida State Road 429, is a natural freshwater lake west of Orlando, Florida, in Orange County, Florida. This lake is surrounded by residential housing and retail establishments. Two roads cross the lake via bridges. Colonial Drive, an east to west street, crosses its middle and Florida State Road 429 cuts across the southern portion of the lake. Much of the lake shore is swampy. Lake Sherwood is listed in the Orange County Wateratlas as a private lake; there is no public access along its shores.
