Lake Winnipesaukee Sailing Association (LWSA) is a non-profit educational institution focused on sailing education that was founded in 1988 [1] [2] in Gilford, New Hampshire on Lake Winnipesaukee in the Lakes Region. Since 1988, LWSA has educated over 2,500 young sailors. [3]

History

Lake Winnipesaukee Sailing Association was founded in 1988 as the Lake Winnipesaukee Yacht Racing Association, [4] and its main focus is on youth sailing education. The Sailing School is located on Smith Cove in Gilford, with classrooms in the Dave Adams Memorial Sailing Center, [5] named after a local sailor who started out sailing at LWSA, but died as a young adult.

Sailing

LWSA conducts a youth sailing school in Gilford. [6] The school teaches sailing to youth and adults, as well as local charities working with veterans [7] [8] and physically- or developmentally-challenged youth. [9] In learning sailing, students also learn safety, self-confidence, teamwork, honesty, positive sporting values, and an appreciation for the environment. [10] The sailing school also cooperates with the Parks and Recreation Departments of several towns (Gilford, Laconia, Belmont, and Meredith) in New Hampshire's Lakes Region to provide community access to sailing lessons. [11] [12]

LWSA organizes large-scale sailboat racing on Lake Winnipesaukee, including a one-design J/80 racing fleet and a PHRF fleet. Among J/80 fleets worldwide, the LWSA fleet is designated as J/80 Fleet One [13] within the J/80 North American Class Association. LWSA has hosted the annual J-Jamboree [14] [15] regatta for over twenty years and hosted the 2016-18 Grand Masters [16] regattas. LWSA is the organizing body for the main youth regatta in the Lakes Region, the W.A.R. (Winnipesaukee Annual Regatta), [17] held over many years on the site of the Winnipesaukee Yacht Club. J/80 sailors from LWSA sail in regattas [18] mainly on the east coast of the United States [19] (particularly northeast). 420 sailors from LWSA sail in regattas in New England in lakes and the Atlantic Ocean. LWSA is a member of the US Sailing Association, [20] and it is within the Western Region of the Northeast Sailing Association. [21]

The Albacore is a 4.57 m (15 ft) two-person planing dinghy, for competitive racing and lake and near-inshore day sailing. Hulls are made of either wood or fiberglass. The basic shape was developed in 1954 from an Uffa Fox design, the Swordfish. Recent boats retain the same classic dimensions, and use modern materials and modern control systems.

The Star World Championship are international sailing regattas in the Star class organized by the International Star Class Yacht Racing Association sanctioned by International Sailing Federation.

The Royal Madras Yacht Club (RMYC) is a yacht club in Chennai, India. The RMYC was founded by Sir Francis Spring in 1911. It was the first sailing club in southern India, and was originally based in what was called the Timber Pond area of Madras Harbour. Soon after its founding the club was granted royal patronage by George V, and it became one of the most prestigious sporting and social clubs in British India. Today the club is located at Springhaven Wharf, named after its founder.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Belknap Mountains</span>

The Belknap Mountains are a small mountain range in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire in the United States. The range lies in the towns of Gilford, Gilmanton, and Alton in Belknap County. The highest peak, Belknap Mountain, with an elevation of 2,382 feet (726 m) above sea level, is the highest point in Belknap County. Belknap Mountain State Forest covers the central part of the range, including the summit and slopes of Belknap Mountain.
