Lakes Community High School

Lakes Community High School, or LCHS, is a public four-year high school located in Lake Villa, Illinois, a northern suburb of Chicago, Illinois, in the United States. It is part of Community High School District 117, which also includes Antioch Community High School. [4]

History

Lakes Community High School opened to 600 freshman and sophomore students on August 23, 2004.

Voters approved the bond referendum to construct a second high school for District 117 in 2000. Construction began in 2001 on both the high school and the Antioch-Lake Villa Township Center, which contains offices and meeting space for district operations. Work continued on schedule and under budget until the school's completion in August 2004. [5]

In the spring of 2003, the board of education selected the school's name, mascot (Eagles) and colors (royal blue, white, red) from suggestions made by community members. At the same time, the district changed its name to Community High School District 117.

Attendance boundaries were determined in April 2003. Students living in the 60046 ZIP code would attend Lakes, as well as those living in homes nearby. Initially all District 117 freshmen were to attend Lakes for 2004–2005, but in December 2003 the board of education revised the plan, keeping all students at the high schools they would eventually graduate from. The class of 2007 was the only class to be split when Lakes opened.

Summer school classes were held at Lakes during June and July 2004, and Gavin grade school students made use of classrooms in the southernmost wing for 15 months starting in the spring of 2004.

Formal dedication ceremonies were held on June 12, 2004. While operating as a separate high school, Lakes shared its athletic program with Antioch Community High School during its first year. Lakes became a member of the North Suburban Conference - Prairie Division in the fall of 2005 and competed on its own with a full complement of varsity and sub-varsity teams.

Community High School District 117 is a 9-12 high school district based in Lake Villa, Lake County, Illinois that serves both the city where it is based and the village of Antioch, Illinois, alongside Old Mill Creek and Lindenhurst. District 117 is composed of two high schools: Antioch Community High School, which is located in the city of its namesake; and Lakes Community High School, which is, in turn, located in Lake Villa. The district superintendent is Dr. Jeff Feucht. Jori Bowen oversees Lakes as principal, Eric Hamilton serves as the principal of Antioch.

In the aftermath of the August 2020 police shooting of Jacob Blake, protests, riots, and civil unrest occurred in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and around the United States as part of the larger United States racial unrest and Black Lives Matter movements. In addition to street protests, marches, and demonstrations, the shooting also led to the 2020 American athlete boycotts.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Kyle Rittenhouse</span> American known for the Kenosha unrest shooting (born 2003)

Kyle Howard Rittenhouse is an American man who gained national attention at age 17 for shooting three men in Kenosha, Wisconsin—two fatally—in August 2020, amid protests following the police shooting of Jacob Blake. Rittenhouse had traveled to Kenosha during the unrest, and joined a group of armed people who said they were there to protect businesses. In a series of confrontations, Rittenhouse fatally shot two men who had tried to grab his gun, and injured another who had pointed a firearm at him. Rittenhouse was subsequently charged by Kenosha County prosecutors with multiple criminal counts, including homicide. Rittenhouse claimed self-defense at trial and was acquitted in November 2021. Two civil lawsuits against him are pending as of February 2023.

On August 25, 2020, Kyle Rittenhouse, a 17-year-old from Antioch, Illinois, shot and killed two men and wounded another man in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The shootings occurred during the protests, riots, and civil unrest that followed the shooting of Jacob Blake. Race was a major theme in U.S. media commentary, although Rittenhouse and those he shot were white. Rittenhouse was armed with an AR-15 style rifle and had joined a group of armed people in Kenosha who said that they were in Kenosha to protect businesses.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Thomas Binger</span> Wisconsin government lawyer

Thomas Clair Binger is an American lawyer and government official who has served in the role of Kenosha County Assistant District Attorney since 2014. He was raised in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he attended the local Washington High School. He ran unsuccessfully as a Democrat for the office of the Racine County District Attorney in 2016. He served as the lead prosecutor in the 2021 trial of Kyle Rittenhouse following the 2020 Kenosha unrest shooting, which ended in Rittenhouse's acquittal.
