Hailakandi district is one of the 33 districts of Assam state in north-eastern India. It makes up the Barak Valley alongside Cachar and Karimganj. It was constituted as a civil subdivision on 1 June 1869. Subsequently,it was upgraded to a district in 1989,when it was split from Cachar district.
Santosh Mohan Dev,was an Indian political leader and a key member of the Indian National Congress. Mr. Dev was first elected to the Parliament in 1980,the first of his seven terms in office as the Member of Parliament,Lok Sabha. In addition to the major national parties,other national and regional parties such as Shiromani Akali Dal,Shiv Sena,Samajwadi Party,Rashtriya Janata Dal,Janata Dal Secular,Jharkhand Mukti Morcha,Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam,Kerala Congress,Jammu &Kashmir National Conference,Indian Union Muslim League,AIMIM,and the Nationalist Congress Party are all dominated by families,mostly those of the party founders.
Dip Gogoi is an Indian politician from Assam who was a Member of Parliament,Lok Sabha from Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency from 2002 to 2014. He was also the member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from Kaliabor constituency from 2001 to 2001 and is a member of the Indian National Congress. He is the brother of former Chief Minister of Assam,Tarun Gogoi.
Vidya Charan Shukla was an Indian politician whose political career spanned six decades. He was predominantly a member of the Indian National Congress,but also had spells in Jan Morcha,Janata Dal,Samajwadi Janata Party (Rashtriya),Nationalist Congress Party and Bharatiya Janata Party. He was known as a close associate of Indira Gandhi.
The Barak Valley is the southernmost region and administrative division of the Indian state of Assam. It is named after the Barak river. The Barak valley consists of three administrative districts of Assam namely - Cachar,Karimganj,and Hailakandi. The main and largest city is Silchar,which seats the headquarter of Cachar district and also serves as administrative divisional office of Barak valley division. The valley is bordered by Mizoram and Tripura to the south, Bangladesh and Meghalaya to the west and Manipur to the east respectively. Once North Cachar Hills was a part of Cachar district which became a subdivision in 1951 and eventually a separate district. On 1 July 1983,Karimganj district was curved out from the eponymous subdivision of Cachar district. In 1989 the subdivision of Hailakandi was upgraded into Hailakandi district.

She is the former president of All India Mahila Congress. She lost the 2019 Lok Sabha Election to BJP candidate Rajdeep Roy,which led her to resign from Indian National Congress and to join the All India Trinamool Congress in 2021.

Kripanath Mallah is an Indian politician serving as the Member of Parliament in the 17th Lok Sabha from Karimganj constituency of Assam. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He had been elected in Assam Legislative Assembly election in 2011 and 2016 from Ratabari constituency.
The 17th Lok Sabha was formed by the members elected in the 2019 Indian general election. Elections,all across India,were conducted in seven phases from 11 April 2019 to 19 May 2019 by the Election Commission of India. Counting started officially on the morning of 23 May 2019 and the results were declared on the same day.
