Lance Newmark is an American professional football executive who is the assistant general manager for the Washington Commanders of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the San Diego Mesa Olympians and San Diego Toreros before joining the San Diego Chargers as a staff assistant in 1996. Newmark later joined the Detroit Lions in 1998, working as a scout and executive in various roles for 26 seasons until joining the Commanders in 2024.

Early life

Newmark was born in La Mesa, California. [1] He played college football as a wide receiver for the San Diego Mesa Olympians for two years before transferring to the San Diego Toreros for one season. [1] He graduated from the school with a degree in social sciences. [1]

Executive career

Newmark joined the San Diego Chargers in 1996, serving two seasons under future Pro Football Hall of Famer Bobby Beathard. [2] With the Chargers, he held the position of staff assistant. [3] In 1998, he left for the Detroit Lions, where he became an assistant in the player personnel department. [1] He then became an area scout for the Lions in 1999. [1] After six years as an area scout, Newmark was promoted to national scout in 2005. [4] He worked in that position from 2005 to 2007. [1]

Newmark was promoted to assistant director of college scouting in 2008, which he served in through 2014, then to director of college scouting in 2015. [1] [5] He remained with the Lions under several different general managers and received another promotion, to director of player personnel, in 2016. [1] [6] By 2020, he was the Lions' longest-serving employee in the scouting department, and after general manager Bob Quinn was fired during the 2020 season, Newmark became one of three who jointly served as de facto general manager for remainder of the year along with Rob Lohman and Kyle O'Brien. [6] [7] In 2022, Newmark was named senior director of player personnel. [8] The following year, the Lions reached the NFC Championship Game.

In 2024, Newmark joined the Washington Commanders as assistant general manager. [8] In his first year with the Commanders, the team reached the NFC Championship. [9]

Newmark is married and has three daughters. [1]

The 2001 NFL season was the 82nd regular season of the National Football League (NFL), and the first season of the 21st century. The league permanently moved the first week of the regular season to the weekend following Labor Day. In the wake of the September 11 attacks, the NFL's week 2 games were postponed and rescheduled to the weekend of January 6 and 7, 2002. To retain the full playoff format, all playoff games, including Super Bowl XXXVI, were rescheduled one week later. The New England Patriots won the Super Bowl, defeating the St. Louis Rams 20–17 at the Louisiana Superdome.

Albert J. Smith was an American professional football scout and executive. He served as a part-time scout for several NFL and USFL teams before joining the Buffalo Bills in 1986, serving as a scout and executive for them for 14 years. With the Bills, the team won four AFC Championships. He joined the San Diego Chargers in 2001 as a director of pro personnel, and was promoted to general manager and executive vice president for them two years later. He stayed with the Chargers until being fired following the 2012 season. Smith's son, Kyle, is the assistant general manager of the Atlanta Falcons.

Anthony Ray Lynn is an American professional football coach and former running back who is the run game coordinator and running backs coach for the Washington Commanders of the National Football League (NFL). He played running back for the Texas Tech Red Raiders and in the NFL for six seasons, primarily with the Denver Broncos where he won Super Bowl XXXII and XXXIII. Lynn entered coaching after retiring as a player in 2000, later serving as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers from 2017 to 2020.

Sheldon Darnell White is an American football executive and former player who is the director of pro scouting for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Miami Ohio. He was drafted by the New York Giants in the third round of the 1988 NFL draft and later played for the Detroit Lions and Cincinnati Bengals before retiring after the 1993 season.

Charles Kenneth "Buddy" Nix is a former American football coach and executive. He was the general manager of the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League (NFL) from 2009 to 2013. Nix was a scout for the Bills from 1993 to 2000. He joined John Butler and A. J. Smith with the San Diego Chargers from 2001 to 2008 and returned to the Bills in 2009.

A general manager (GM) in American football is a team executive who is typically the head of football operations, which includes leading the scouting department and being responsible for handling free agent transactions and contract negotiations with players and coaches. Under such a model, the GM reports directly to the owner or team president. However, some team owners serve as their own GM or employ one who acts in a supporting role to the head coach.
