The Land Master is a civilian all-terrain utility vehicle produced in the late 1970s and early 1980s as a competitor to the Land Rover.[ citation needed ] It incorporated design features that were not then available on the contemporary Series 3 and were only introduced some years later on the Land Rover Defender.

It was tested by the British Army, including in forward control form, and one was used by the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary. The Devon and Cornwall Constabulary vehicle bore the registration OTA114W, and is pictured here. This is the registration displayed on the Land Master survivor image to the right. Money was promised by the Ministry of Defence but the deal fell through. Eventually, the rights to the Land Master were sold to a company called C.K. Farnworth of Crumlin, Caerphilly, Wales. The company had industrial premises and several vehicles were produced in Oakdale in South Wales.

The prototype vehicles were made at Trelavour Road Garage, St Dennis, Cornwall, and were based on Dodge pickup truck parts. The chassis was made of tubular steel so that when it went over bumps and steep angles, dirt on top of the chassis rails would fall off, unlike Land Rovers of the time. All body panels were made of aluminium. Surviving vehicles are very rare, one Land Master (possibly the only one actually sold to a customer) is rumoured still to be on the road in Kent, England,(this vehicle which was the third one built, is still in existence although not on the road) and another is kept by the original builders at St. Dennis. A very tatty survivor was spotted near Hexham in Northumberland in the early 1990s and two images of survivors can be found on the web - though it is currently unclear which company made them or at what date.

Engines available included a 3.8 L Perkins diesel I4 rated at 82 bhp (61 kW; 83 PS), a 4.0 L Perkins diesel V6 rated at 101 bhp (75 kW; 102 PS), or a 5.9 L Chrysler petrol V8 rated at 170 bhp (127 kW; 172 PS). It is rumoured[ by whom? ] that the vehicle in Kent may have been retrofitted with a VM diesel.

A successor business to those originals mentioned above introduced a version of the vehicle that they called Powr4. This seems to have been a very short lived iteration.

Following the 1989 introduction of the Land Rover Discovery, the term 'Land Rover' became the name of a broader marque, and no longer worked as the name of a specific model; thus in 1990 Land Rover renamed them as Defender 90 and Defender 110 and Defender 130 respectively.

In 1974, the firm was acquired by International Harvester, which sold it in March 1984 to the Spanish group Enasa which made it a subsidiary of Pegaso. In 1990, it became part of Iveco which used the brand for various types of specialised vehicles in the United Kingdom. The range of models produced included EuroMover, Pacer and Strato, which are aimed at refuse collection, recycling and construction operators.

The Shorland is an armoured patrol car that was designed specifically for the Royal Ulster Constabulary by Frederick Butler. The first design meeting took place in November 1961. The third and final prototype was completed in 1964 and the first RUC Shorlands were delivered in 1966. They were reallocated to the Ulster Defence Regiment in 1970. The Royal Ulster Constabulary soon replaced the Shorland with an armoured Land Rover with more conventional profile and no machine gun turret.

The Land Rover Series I, II, and III, or simply the Land-Rover are compact British off-road vehicles, produced by the Rover Company since 1948, and later by British Leyland. Inspired by the World War II jeep, it was the first mass-produced civilian four-wheel drive car with doors, and an available hard roof. Contrary to conventional car and truck chassis, it used a sturdier fully box-welded frame. Furthermore, due to post-war steel shortage, and aluminium surplus, Land Rovers received non-rusting aluminium alloy bodies, favouring their longevity. The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, also known as the Range Rover Evoque or the Land Rover Evoque, is a subcompact luxury crossover SUV developed and produced by Jaguar Land Rover under their Land Rover marque. The original Evoque was a development of the Land Rover LRX concept vehicle, which was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in January 2008. The first generation Evoque was produced from July 2011 until 2018 in three and five-door versions, with both two-wheel and four-wheel drive. The Iveco Massif is a utility 4×4 vehicle mainly aimed at the utility services and military markets and was part of Iveco’s 4×4 and off-road range, which also includes the Trakker lorry and Daily 4×4 van. Massif was produced by Santana Motor from 2007 to 2011 and its rebadged and restyled version of the Santana PS-10. In 2010, due to poor sales and Fiat Group's ability to serve the European 4×4 market with imported Jeeps, such as the Jeep Wrangler vehicles, that were made to replace the Santana in the market, Iveco decided to stop the agreement with Santana. In 2011 the owner of Santana, the Government of Andalusia, decided to close down the company and its car factory and 1,341 people were laid off or retired prematurely. From 6,692 cars made in 2007, the company manufactured 1,197 in 2009 and no more than 769 in 2010.

Bernard Cournil was a French vehicle maker who progressed from improving other people’s vehicles to manufacturing his own during the late 1950s. Rights to manufacture his design were subsequently held by a succession of businesses in Portugal after the French creator of the vehicle had disappeared from the picture. The vehicle built was also called the Cournil, and was intended mainly as an all-round offroad vehicle especially suited for farm usage: it could pull a plow and was offered with a PTO, cranes, or even machine gun mountings.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bedford S type</span> Motor vehicle

The Bedford S is a heavy lorry produced in Great Britain between 1950 and 1959. Launched at the Commercial Vehicle Show in 1950, it was the largest Bedford lorry available at the time. Originally available only with a 110 bhp (82 kW) petrol engine, a diesel was added in 1953. The lorry proved popular amongst haulers and general traders, for fire engines, and was used for the first liquid egg tanker in 1966.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Land Rover Defender (L663)</span> Motor vehicle

The Land Rover Defender is a four-wheel-drive off-road luxury 4x4 from British automotive company Jaguar Land Rover. The vehicle was launched on 10 September 2019 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It is significant for being the first all-new version of the Defender, breaking the engineering lineage with its predecessor, a descendant of the original Series Land Rovers of 1948. The unibody-based Defender is aimed at a more upmarket segment than its predecessor.
