Land of the Loon

Land of the Loon is an annual event each summer hosted by the city of Virginia, Minnesota for its residents and surrounding communities. Each year it starts off with a parade, then Olcott Park hosts dozens of merchants to sell their fine goods of arts, crafts, foods, clothing, jewelry, etc.

Land of the Loon has also been used to host All Class Reunions for the Virginia High School (which hosted its first All Class Reunion in 2008). During these events, Virginia, Minnesota sees its highest peak of tourism.

Land of the Loon is one of many summer time celebrations celebrated in the area collectively known as the Mesabi Iron Range. Others include Mines and Pines in Hibbing, Minnesota, Eveleth, Minnesota 3 July, Gilbert, Minnesota 4 July, Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota Water Carnival, Merritt Days in Mt. Iron, Minnesota, and several others. [1]

Officials scrapped the event in 2020 citing COVID-19 pandemic concerns.

Virginia is just south of the Superior National Forest and is about 100 miles (160 km) south of the Canada–United States border at International Falls, Minnesota and 55 miles (89 km) northwest of Duluth, Minnesota. Virginia is a part of the Duluth metropolitan area and U.S. Highway 53 runs through town.

Common loon Freshwater bird native to North America

The common loon or great northern diver is a large member of the loon, or diver, family of birds. Breeding adults have a plumage that includes a broad black head and neck with a greenish, purplish, or bluish sheen, blackish or blackish-grey upperparts, and pure white underparts except some black on the undertail coverts and vent. Non-breeding adults are brownish with a dark neck and head marked with dark grey-brown. Their upperparts are dark brownish-grey with an unclear pattern of squares on the shoulders, and the underparts, lower face, chin, and throat are whitish. The sexes look alike, though males are significantly heavier than females. During the breeding season, loons live on lakes and other waterways in Canada; the northern United States ; and southern parts of Greenland and Iceland. Small numbers breed on Svalbard and sporadically elsewhere in Arctic Eurasia. Common loons winter on both coasts of the US as far south as Mexico, and on the Atlantic coast of Europe.

Canterbury Park Horse racing facility in Minnesota

Canterbury Park, is a horse racing track in Shakopee, Minnesota, United States. Canterbury Park Holding Corporation hosts parimutuel wagering on live thoroughbred and quarter horse racing at its facilities in Shakopee and parimutuel wagering on races held at out-of-state racetracks that are simulcast to the racetrack. In addition, the Canterbury Park Card Casino operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is also regulated by the Minnesota Racing Commission. Casino games include blackjack, baccarat, Ultimate Texas Hold 'Em and poker. Canterbury Park also derives revenue from related services and activities, such as concessions, parking, admissions and programs, and from other entertainment events held at the racetrack. Furthermore, Canterbury Park is pursuing a strategy to enhance shareholder value by developing approximately 140 acres of underutilized land surrounding the racetrack in a project known as Canterbury Commons. The company is pursuing several mixed-use development opportunities for the underutilized land, directly and through joint ventures.

Nu Alpha Kappa

Sports in Minnesota include professional teams in all major sports, Olympic Games contenders and medalists, especially in the Winter Olympics, collegiate teams in major and small-school conferences and associations and active amateur teams and individual sports. The State of Minnesota has a team in all five major professional leagues. Along with professional sports, there are numerous collegiate teams including the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers and St. Thomas Tommies in NCAA Division I, as well as many others across the Minnesota public and private colleges and universities.

Virginia High School (Minnesota) Public, coeducational secondary school in Minnesota, United States

Virginia High School, home of the Blue Devils, educates students grades 7–12 in Virginia, Minnesota, United States. It is a public high school with open enrollment located across from the Saint Louis County District Courthouse on scenic 5th Avenue. Virginia High School has a strong music department known for the Marching Blues, the school's marching band. The A Capella choir is directed by Matthew Krage. The high school also participates in Minnesota State High School League sports such as hockey, basketball, volleyball, tennis, football, track & field, cross country, baseball, swimming, golf, soccer and wrestling. Despite budget problems in the past decade due to declining enrollment, Virginia Secondary has had success in standardized state testing, graduation rates, and school pride. Enrollment has been at a slow decline for the last few decades but enrollment has been increasing in the lower grade levels, and open enrollment from neighboring districts has brought new students to the school. Students are unofficially divided into grades 7 & 8 and 9-12. The school day consists of 7 periods ranging from 51 to 52 minutes with 3 to 5 minutes passing time allowed. Other Wednesday, students get out of school an hour early to allow for faculty professional development meetings. Junior high students have a closed lunch period between 3rd and 4th hours while grades 9–12 enjoy an open lunch after 4th hour.

Elcor, Minnesota Ghost town in Minnesota, United States

Elcor is a ghost town, or more properly, an extinct town, in the U.S. state of Minnesota that was inhabited between 1897 and 1956. It was built on the Mesabi Iron Range near the city of Gilbert in St. Louis County. Elcor was its own unincorporated community before it was abandoned and was never a neighborhood proper of the city of Gilbert. Not rating a figure in the national census, the people of Elcor were only generally considered to be citizens of Gilbert. The area where Elcor was located was annexed by Gilbert when its existing city boundaries were expanded after 1969.
