Landfall is a 2017 Australian thriller film directed by Travis Bain. The film follows young couple Dylan and Maisie's attempts to survive a home invasion that occurs in the midst of a tropical cyclone. The film premiered on November 26, 2017, in Melbourne, Australia, and was released on January 27, 2018.
A young couple in tropical Australia is trapped in their home by three fugitives carrying a mysterious icebox containing unknown contents, and they must rely on their wits and cunning to survive as a severe tropical cyclone looms.
Landfall was largely shot in and around one location, a rented beachfront home in Innisfail, Queensland. Principal photography took place over four weeks in two two-week blocks, with the first block based on Vernon Wells' schedule and the second block used to film scenes not requiring Wells. All cyclone sequences and weather effects were a mix of practical effects and CGIspecial effects. Physical debris was thrown at actors during shots, with CGI used to depict the cyclone itself.[2] The film was partly financed via a Regional Arts Fund grant and partly crowdfunded.[3]
Release
MultiVisionnaire Pictures acquired rest-of-world distribution rights for the film and released it globally on various streaming platforms in 2020. A special edition region 1 DVD with director's commentary and other special features was released in North America in March 2020.
Reception and awards
Dan Cachia of the Mr. Movie's Film Blog considered the film to be one of the best "Aussie genre" films of 2017 and heavily praised its dialogue.[4] Simon Foster, though critical of the "increasingly convoluted" plot, similarly described the dialogue as "Tarantino-esque" and favorably compared the film to Schumacher'sTrespass, commending especially the performances of Heath, Condon, and Stevenson.[5]
Landfall was selected to open the 2018 Oz International Film Festival (Melbourne) and won in the categories of Best Feature, Best Director (Travis Bain), Best Actor (Vernon Wells), Best Actress (Kristen Condon), and Best Supporting Actor (Tony Bonner).[6][7] The film won the ASIN Award for Best Director (Travs Bain) and Certificate of Highest Achievement for Best Composer (Samantha Van Der Sluis) and Best Feature Film at the 2018 Australian Screen Industry Network Awards (Brisbane).[8]Landfall won in the categories of Best Picture, Best Director (Travis Bain), Best Actor (Vernon Wells), and Best Sound (Samantha Van Der Sluis) at the 2019 Low to No Film Festival in Vegas.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Kelvin was a strong tropical cyclone that impacted Western Australia in February 2018, causing moderate damage. The system was first identified as a weak tropical low on the morning of 11 February over the Northern Territory's Tiwi Islands by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BoM). The low moved southwestwards over land and emerged over the Indian Ocean near Broome on 16 February. The storm intensified into a Category 1 tropical cyclone on the following day, becoming the sixth named storm of the 2017–18 Australian region cyclone season. Kelvin subsequently moved slowly eastwards and began to rapidly intensify in the hours prior to landfall. On 18 February, the storm crossed the coast along Eighty Mile Beach as a Category 3 severe tropical cyclone on the Australian scale, and a high-end Category 1 hurricane-equivalent cyclone on the Saffir–Simpson scale. Despite being over land, Kelvin weakened at a slow rate over the next few days, and was downgraded to a tropical low on 19 February. The remnant low of the system drifted over the Outback before being last noted by BoM on 21 February.
Severe Tropical Cyclone Owen was an erratic and long-lived tropical cyclone that affected numerous regions within its long travel, especially Queensland, during December 2018. It was the fourth tropical low, the first tropical cyclone, and first severe tropical cyclone of the 2018–19 Australian region cyclone season. Cyclone Owen developed on 29 November 2018 from an area of low pressure that was situated over the Solomon Islands; the system struggled to strengthen in a conflicting environment and degenerated to a tropical low on 3 December. The low drifted westward, and on 9 December, it made its first landfall in Queensland, before moving over the Gulf of Carpentaria, where more favourable conditions allowed it to re-organise. The system regenerated into a tropical cyclone on 12 December and rapidly intensified into a Category 3 severe tropical cyclone that night. At midnight on 13 December, Cyclone Owen made landfall in the Northern Territory, before turning eastward and reaching peak intensity, with sustained winds of 150 km/h (95 mph) and a minimum barometric pressure of 958 hPa (28.3 inHg). On 13 December, Owen made landfall on Queensland again, just north of the mouth of the Gilbert River near Kowanyama. The cyclone weakened rapidly after its third landfall, and the final advisory on Owen was issued on 15 December, after it had degenerated into a tropical low. However, the system persisted over the Coral Sea for another several days, before dissipating on 20 December.
