Lanelle Olandrea Tanangada (born 1 July 1979) is a Solomon Islands teacher and politician who has served as the country's Education Minister since April 2020.
Lanelle Oleandra Tanangada was born on 1 July 1979 in Western Province. Her father is part Ranongga and Vella and her mother is from Marovo Lagoon. [1] Her parents were Seventh-day Adventist missionaries and she has one elder brother. [1] She attended SDA mission primary schools in Honiara and Betikama Adventist High School. [1]
Tanangada undertook undergraduate studies at the Pacific Adventist University in Papua New Guinea [2] and received a Master of Education from the University of Waikato in New Zealand in 2013, [3] [4] with a thesis titled A study of language use in secondary school classrooms in the Solomon Islands:Conceptions,practices and proficiencies. [5] She was a teacher at SDA schools in Kukudu,Burns Creek and Betikama. [1] [2]
Tanangada was elected as the independent representative for Gizo/Kolombangara constituency in a May 2018 by-election after her husband Jimson Tanangada lost the seat after being convicted of bribing voters during the 2014 election. [6] [7] [8] The charges were brought by former Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo,who then contested the seat. Tanangada defeated Lilo with 2580 votes to his 1593. [3] [2] [9] She was the first woman in the Western Province elected to the Parliament [3] and the fourth woman MP in the country's history. [10] On 18 October 2019,she was sworn in as Minister for Women,Youth and Children Affairs. [4]
Tanangada joined the Kadere Party and became part of the Democratic Coalition Government for Advancement. [11] She was re-elected for a full term in the April 2019 elections,again defeating Lilo with 4397 votes to his 4002. [11] She became one of only two women in the 50-seat Parliament. [12] [13] She was appointed Minister for Police,National Security and Correctional Services, [12] a position she resigned from in October 2019. Tanangada is married to Jimson Tanangada and they have two children. She is a Christian. [1]
Solomon Islands,also known simply as the Solomons,is an island country consisting of six major islands and over 900 smaller islands in Melanesia,part of Oceania,to the northeast of Australia. Kolombangara is an island in the New Georgia Islands group of the nation state of Solomon Islands in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The name is from a local language,a rough translation of its meaning is "Water Lord" with approximately 80 rivers and streams running down its flanks.
Nanaia Cybele Mahuta is a New Zealand former politician who served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand from 2020 to 2023. A member of the New Zealand Labour Party,Mahuta served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for 27 years,at first for the party list and then for three different Māori electorates,latterly for Hauraki-Waikato. Mahuta served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 6 November 2020 to 11 November 2023. She received international recognition as the first woman to hold the Foreign Affairs portfolio. In October 2022,Mahuta became the Mother of the House,having served continuously in the House of Representatives since the 1996 general election. She lost her seat in parliament in the 2023 general election to Te Pāti Māori candidate Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke,who was subsequently Baby of the House.
Katherine Victoria O'Regan was a New Zealand politician. She was a member of parliament from 1984 to 1999,representing the National Party. She served as a minister for the National Government for six of those years.

Gizo is the capital of the Western Province in Solomon Islands. With a population of 7,177,it is the third largest town in the country. It is situated on Ghizo Island approximately 380 kilometres west-northwest of the capital,Honiara,and is just southwest of the larger island of Kolombangara.

Gordon Darcy Lilo is a Solomon Islander politician who served as the prime minister of Solomon Islands from 16 November 2011 to 9 December 2014. He was a member of the National Parliament of the Solomon Islands,representing the Gizo/Kolombangara constituency spanning Gizo and the island of Kolombangara in Western Province. Lilo served as the Minister of Finance of the Solomon Islands from 2006 to 2007 and from 2010 to 2011.
Henry Tuakeu Puna is a Cook Islands politician. He most recently served as the secretary-general of the Pacific Islands Forum from May of 2021 to 2024. He was Prime Minister of the Cook Islands from November 2010 to October 2020. Since 2006 he has been leader of the Cook Islands Party.

Hilda Cathy Heine is a Marshallese educator and politician. She has been serving as the president of the Marshall Islands since 2024,having previously served from 2016 to 2020. Heine was the first woman to lead any sovereign country in Micronesia and the first person from the Marshall Islands to earn a doctorate. Prior to entering politics,she worked as a teacher and counselor at Marshall Islands High School and then as a women's rights activist with her organization Women United Together Marshall Islands.
Freda Tuki Soriocomua is a politician of Solomon Islands who served as Minister of Rural Development from 15 December 2014 to 18 August 2015 and subsequently as Minister of Women,Youth,and Children's Affairs from 18 August 2015 to 8 October 2018 when she was removed from office after being found guilty of vote buying or corruption by the Solomon Islands High Court. She re-gained her seat as a Member of Parliament representing the Temotu Vatud constituency at the 2019 general elections.
General elections were held in Solomon Islands on 3 April 2019 to determine the composition of the 11th Parliament. The election was the first to occur since the conclusion of the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI) in 2017. Parliament passed amendments to the electoral act in 2018 that included the introduction of pre-polling,a significant increase in campaign budgets for candidates and stricter penalties for individuals committing electoral offences such as vote-buying. Ten of the thirteen parties that contested the election won seats,and the Solomon Islands Democratic Party and the Kadere Party were the parties that secured the highest number,winning eight each. However,as in previous elections,independent candidates won the largest share of seats,securing 21.
RSIPV Gizo (05) is a Guardian-class patrol boat in service with the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force Maritime Department. She was the fifth boat of her class to be completed. Australian officials officially handed her over to representatives of the Solomon Islands on 8 November 2019,at the Austal shipyard in Henderson,Western Australia.
Lillian Maefai was a member of the Parliament of the Solomon Islands. She was only the fifth woman ever to be elected to that parliament.
