Lar O'Byrne (10 August 1924 [1] [2] – 5 November 2015) was an Irish footballer.

After playing for junior side CY Ringsend, he joined Shamrock Rovers in 1946 under Bob Fullam and was later managed by Jimmy Dunne. In 1951 he fell out with the then owners the Cunninghams over wages and left for Drumcondra F.C. He retired from the game in 1960.

He won one senior cap for the Republic of Ireland on 24 April 1949 in a 2–0 friendly loss against Belgium at Dalymount Park. He represented the League of Ireland XI 4 times while at Glenmalure Park in 1949. The mother of former Hoop Johnny Fullam was Lar's half sister. His cousin Kevin Martin boxed for Ireland at the 1948 Summer Olympics and 1952 Summer Olympics.[ citation needed ]

On Friday, 10 April 2009, Lar was honoured at Tallaght Stadium with a reception and he was presented with a Dublin Crystal memento of his time with the Club. [3]

As of September 2012 O'Byrne was Rovers' oldest surviving player. [3] He died on 5 November 2015, aged 91. [4]

Shamrock Rovers Football Club is a football club from Dublin, Republic of Ireland. Founded in Ringsend, a southside, inner suburb of Dublin, the club's date of foundation is uncertain and disputed. Between 1926 and 1987 the club played at Glenmalure Park, Milltown. Shamrock Rovers F.C. is Ireland's most successful football club having won the League of Ireland a record 21 times, including four times in a row in the 1980s and again in 2020s, along with the FAI Cup a record 25 times, including six times in a row in the 1960s. It was also the first Irish club to participate in a European competition, playing in the European Cup in 1957. Shamrock Rovers was also one of the European club teams that spent the 1967 season in the United States to found the United Soccer Association, representing Boston as the Boston Rovers.

He also played for the League of Ireland XI and Ireland. His son Paddy Fagan played for the Republic of Ireland in the 1950s and 1960s. Shamrock Rovers II was the reserve team of Shamrock Rovers. Throughout its history Rovers have entered reserve teams in various leagues including the Leinster Senior League, the League of Ireland B Division, the A Championship and the League of Ireland First Division.

The LFA President's Cup was an association football cup competition featuring League of Ireland clubs affiliated to the Leinster Football Association. It was played for between 1930 and 2002. It was a de facto national super cup and on twenty four occasions featured the League of Ireland champions against the FAI Cup winners. The Football Association of Ireland also organised similar competitions, such as the Top Four Cup and the FAI Super Cup, both of which co-existed with the LFA President's Cup. Since 2014 the FAI has organised their own similarly named super cup, the President's Cup.

Fran Watters was an Ireland international footballer. Watters played for several clubs in the League of Ireland and in 1925–26 scored 15 goals for Shelbourne, helping them win their first ever League of Ireland title.

Billy "Juicy" Farrell was an Irish association footballer who played for Shamrock Rovers and the League of Ireland XI during the 1920s. Farrell was a prominent member of the Rovers team that won the treble in 1924–25 and was top goalscorer in the League of Ireland on two successive seasons. He remains one of Rovers all-time leading goalscorers. Farrell was a highly regarded player, keeping a young Jimmy Dunne out of the Rovers first team. During the summer of 1926 Farrell suffered a broken thigh following a motor cycle accident and this subsequently ended his career.
