Dr. Lawrence J. Lemak, FAAOS, FCRSC (born 1943; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is an orthopedic surgeon who practices at the Lemak Sports Medicine & Orthopedics in Birmingham, Alabama. He is a sports medicine and orthopedic surgeon, specializing in arthroscopy and reconstruction of the knee, shoulder, hip and elbow. [1]

In 1986, Lemak and his partner James Andrews, M.D. founded the Alabama Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center (ASMOC) as well as the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) in Birmingham. Lemak has played an integral role in sports medicine and arthroscopy research as a founder and member of the board of directors for the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI).[ citation needed ]

In 2001, Lemak founded the National Center for Sports Safety, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the importance of injury prevention and safety in youth sports. [2]

On October 8, 2009, the United Football League announced that Lemak would serve as Chief Medical Officer to the League. [3]

Affiliations

Lemak is a member and Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (FAAOS) and member of and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. Dr. Lemak serves as Medical Director for Major League Soccer, the PGA and the LPGA and formerly for NFL Europe.

Lemak serves as team physician for Auburn University, Samford University, Birmingham-Southern College, Jacksonville State University, and as the Sports Commissioner for the State of Alabama. He is a clinical assistant professor at the University of Virginia and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. In addition, Dr. Lemak served as Chair of the Department of Orthopaedics at The University of South Florida from 2004 through 2008, and was largely responsible for re-establishing the Department of Orthopaedics at USF. [4] A board-certified surgeon, with a Medical degree from the University of Alabama and an Orthopaedic Residency completed at the University of Pittsburgh. [5]

American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) located in Birmingham, Alabama was founded in 1986 by Dr. James Andrews and Dr. Lawrence Lemak with original funding from HealthSouth Corporation. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the understanding, prevention, and treatment of sports-related injuries through research, technology-based education, and information dissemination.

Gregg Carr

Gregg Kevin Carr, M.D. is currently an orthopedic surgeon in Birmingham, Alabama and a former professional American football linebacker in the National Football League (NFL), where he played four seasons for the Pittsburgh Steelers (1985–1988). Carr was an All-American college football linebacker at Auburn University (1981–1984) and later attended the University of Alabama School of Medicine.

Ruth Jackson was the first female board-certified orthopedic surgeon in the United States and the first female admitted to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Ramon (Ramón) Cugat Bertomeu is a Spanish surgeon specializing in orthopedic surgery, orthopaedic sports medicine, and arthroscopy. Cugat's first venture into sports was as a member of the team of orthopedic surgeons during the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Since then, he has been bound to the Catalan Mutual Insurance of Football where he has operated on thousands of players from all categories most often the Association football players of FC Barcelona, among those being Pep Guardiola, Xavi Hernández, Samuel Eto'o, Andrés Iniesta, Carles Puyol, David Villa, Luis Suárez and Fernando Torres. He has also operated on multiple Manchester City players, including Benjamin Mendy, Ilkay Gundogan, David Silva, Kevin de Bruyne and Aymeric Laporte.

Ashok Rajgopal is an Indian orthopaedic surgeon, credited with close to 20,000 Arthroscopic and over 35,000 Total Knee Arthroplasty surgeries and reported to be one of the most experienced in his field in India. He was honoured by the Government of India in 2014, by bestowing on him the Padmashri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his services to the fields of orthopaedic surgery. Puliyur Krishnaswamy Duraiswami (1912–1974) was an Indian orthopedic surgeon, medical writer and the Director General of Health Services under the Government of India. Shyama Prasad Mandal is an Indian orthopedic surgeon and the co-chairperson of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. After securing his graduate and MS degrees from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, he continued his education to secure the degree of MCh in orthopedics from Liverpool University. He is a former president of the Indian Orthopaedic Association as well as the president of its Building Committee and the incumbent president of Board of Trustees of Amarjyoti Charitable Trust, a not-for-profit organization engaged in educational and rehabilitation service. João Espregueira-Mendes Portuguese orthopaedic surgeon

João Duarte Coelho do Sameiro Espregueira-Mendes is a Portuguese orthopaedic surgeon, specialized in sports orthopaedics, traumatology and knee surgery. During his career, he has been engaged in scientific research, university teaching, leadership of both national and international scientific societies and in the clinical practice as Clinical Director of the Clinica do Dragão, Espregueira-Mendes Sports Centre – FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence.

Cyril Wayne McIlwraith is the founding Director of the Orthopaedic Research Center, a University Distinguished Professor in orthopaedics and holds the Barbara Cox Anthony University Chair in Orthopaedic Research at Colorado State University. He is a New Zealander who has had most of his career in the United States and is an equine orthopaedic surgeon and orthopaedic researcher. He pioneered many of the techniques in equine arthroscopic surgery including writing the textbook “Diagnostic and surgical arthroscopy in the horse”. He is noted for significant achievements in the fields of osteoarthritis cartilage injury, regenerative therapies and contributions on understanding of joint pathology and repair, the development and validation of equine models of joint diseases, surgical technologies, intra-articular therapies, cartilage resurfacing, tissue engineering and gene therapies for osteoarthritis many of which have been or are translatable to human joint disease. He received the Marshall R. Rick Wayne Wright is an American orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist. He was the Jerome J. Gilden Distinguished Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine before becoming the Dan Spengler, M.D., Chair in Orthopaedics at Vanderbilt University.
