Last Night in Town is the first studio album by the American metalcore band Every Time I Die. After recording a demo, the band signed with the independent label Goodfellow Records in 2000 and released The Burial Plot Bidding War EP. The band signed to Ferret Music in mid-2000 and was planning to record its first album later in the year. After writing was completed in December of that year, the band went on several US tours until March 2001. In March and April, Last Night in Town was recorded with the Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz at Zing Studios in Westfield, Massachusetts. Following recording, the band went on tour with Killswitch Engage and Santa Sangre.
Last Night in Town was first released on August 14, 2001. The album received positive reviews with critics praising the band's chaotic sound showcased on the album. It was reissued in June 2004 with new artwork.
It was pressed on vinyl by Suburban Home Records in December 2006 as part of a box with Hot Damn! (2003) and Gutter Phenomenon (2005).
Every Time I Die was formed in 1998 by two brothers, the vocalist Keith Buckley and the guitarist Jordan Buckley. They brought in the guitarist Andy Williams and the drummer Michael "Ratboy" Novack. With a session musician on bass guitar, the band recorded a demo. With John McCarthy on bass guitar, the band toured across North America. With Aaron Ratajczak on bass guitar, the band signed with the independent label Goodfellow Records and released the EP The Burial Plot Bidding War in 2000. [1] The band subsequently toured heavily across the east coast and Midwest. On July 10, it was announced that the band had signed with Ferret Music and would record its first album at the end of the summer or early fall, [2] aiming for its release in the fall. [3]
Two days later, the band revealed that the album would be titled Last Night in Town. On December 5, the band was planning to record Last Night in Town in February 2001, [2] aiming for its release in the spring. [4] On December 22, [2] it was announced that the band had finished writing for Last Night in Town and that recording would take place in either February or March 2001. [5] In December 2000 and January 2001, the band toured with Eighteen Visions. Following this, the band went on tour with Killswitch Engage. [2] From early to mid-March, the band went on a short US tour with Premonitions of War. [6]
On March 21, the band began recording Last Night in Town with the producer Adam Dutkiewicz of Killswitch Engage. [7] Recording took place at Zing Studios in Westfield, Massachusetts. [8] On April 12, it was announced that recording was finished. On April 21 and 22, the group returned to the studio to mix the album. [9]
Buckley said the album was "a chronological order of riffs that we wrote". [10] Chris Gramlich of Exclaim! said the album was "conceptually darker" than The Burial Plot Bidding War, and said it was "lyrically and artistically, laced with black-humour, technical excursions, metallic breaks, [and] intertwining and eclectic guitar work". [11] Jason D. Taylor of AllMusic says the album showcases the band "careening from metalcore crunch to exhausting screamo and even meandering into slightly emotional melodic singing" to the likes of Glassjaw. [12] Mustapha Mond of Lambgoat said the album had a "darker, sludgier metal sound." [13]
In July and August, the band toured with Killswitch Engage and Santa Sangre. [14] After being planned for release in July, [9] Last Night in Town was released on August 14 through Ferret Music. Chris Gramlich of Exclaim! called the artwork "striking" and it said it showed the band "decked out Reservoir Dogs-style, beating the tar out of some poor jerk". [11] Buckley said it was "really dark, [and] really sarcastic". [11] A music video was released for "The Logic of Crocodiles", which featured the wrestler Matt Cross. [15]

The AllMusic reviewer Jason D. Taylor called the album "a cathartic, chaotic release", and continued, "The listener will go from being stunned to outright jaw-dropping incredulity." He said that the record was very comparable to Drowningman in the regard that both bands are able to "flawlessly twist your mind into a pretzel and then straighten it back out with the occasional melody". Taylor concluded his review by saying that the "reluctance to remove the album from your stereo is surely proof enough that this is one of the most potentially amazing bands inhabiting the metalcore scene". [12] Mustapha Mond of Lambgoat said the album was "as peppy as tough, crazy hardcore can get. And on top of the boots-rocking beat, ETID layers breakdown after breakdown". He said it "keeps up the rocking for ten powerful tracks, and manages to put enough artistry into them that any one, listened to alone, will knock your socks off". [13] In a review for Punknews, Brian Shultz said the album brought "the terms "rhetoric" and "caustic" each to a whole new level. He noted that the band "stray from choruses like they were acting out magnetism laws" and praised Buckley's "penetrating screams and joyously wild yells". He mentioned that the guitars "flip-flop between frenetic riffing and hyperactive decrescendos. ... it's metalcore that does not let the fuck up". [16]
Last Night in Town was re-released on June 21, 2004, with new artwork. [17] The album was reissued on vinyl as part of a box set along with Hot Damn! (2003) and Gutter Phenomenon (2005). The box set was released on December 12, 2006, by the independent label Suburban Home Records. [18]
In 2010, Buckley said he re-listened to the album and said, "It's hard to play, I don't know how I even wrote some of that stuff." [19] In 2013, he said the album was "just 50 riffs and none of them repeat and it's almost like, what were we thinking?". [20]
Jim Smallman of TeamRock ranked Last Night in Town as his least favorite Every Time I Die album, calling it "A fine debut, but the band were to head on to better things." [21]

Killswitch Engage is an American metalcore band from Westfield, Massachusetts, formed in 1999 after the disbanding of Overcast and Aftershock. Killswitch Engage's current lineup consists of vocalist Jesse Leach, guitarists Joel Stroetzel and Adam Dutkiewicz, bassist Mike D'Antonio, and drummer Justin Foley. The band has released eight studio albums and two live performance albums. Their eighth studio album, Atonement, was released on August 16, 2019.
Alive or Just Breathing is the second studio album by American metalcore band Killswitch Engage. It was released on May 21, 2002, through Roadrunner Records. Alive or Just Breathing was Killswitch Engage's first album on Roadrunner and was recorded from October 2001 to February 2002. Produced by drummer and guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz, this was the band's first album on a major label, which prompted them to write and record the album to the best of their abilities. Alive or Just Breathing has been viewed as a landmark album in the metalcore genre and was well praised upon its release by fans and critics. Poison the Well is an American metalcore band from Miami, Florida who were last signed to Ferret Music. In 2010, they announced a hiatus to explore other interests. Lead guitarist Ryan Primack and drummer Christopher Hornbrook were the only remaining founding members, although vocalist Jeffrey Moreira featured on all five of their full-length albums. The band has since performed several reunion shows: two in 2015, eleven in 2016 and one in 2020.
Howard Jones is an American metalcore vocalist best known as the former lead singer of Killswitch Engage and Blood Has Been Shed. He is the current vocalist of Light the Torch, formerly known as Devil You Know, and SION with YouTuber/guitarist Jared Dines. Jones is known for his distinctive powerful operatic singing voice and strong unclean vocals.
Dying Fetus is an American death metal band originally from Greater Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Formed in 1991, the group is known for their consistently hook-laden song structures, characterized by blast beats, complex riffing, slam riffs and heavy breakdowns. Additionally, their reality-based lyrics characterized by political/modern themes are notable in death metal. Various line-up changes throughout the years have left John Gallagher as the sole remaining original member, as well as the band's driving force. The current lineup is guitarist Chris Towning, lead vocalist Mat Bruso, drummer Mark Castillo and bassist Aaron Patrick. He Is Legend is an American hard rock/heavy metal band from Wilmington, North Carolina, formed in the late 1990s but settled on the name "He Is Legend" in 2003. Blood Has Been Shed was an American metalcore band based in Granby, Connecticut. The band came together in 1997 and has featured members of Killswitch Engage, Diecast, Light the Torch, Red Tide, Terror, Walls of Jericho, Bury Your Dead and The Acacia Strain. Blood Has Been Shed has released three full-length albums—I Dwell on Thoughts of You (1998), Novella of Uriel (2001) and Spirals (2003)—and was signed to Ferret Music and Roadrunner Records. The band was a frequent performer at metal festivals Hellfest and the New England Metal and Hardcore Festival.
Too Bad You're Beautiful is the debut studio album by Long Island-based post-hardcore band From Autumn to Ashes. The album is unique in that it features the dual vocals of Benjamin Perri and drummer Francis Mark. Perri provides the hardcore-esque shouts while Mark sings and occasionally contributes background screams. The album was reissued in 2005 with the Sin, Sorrow, and Sadness demo as bonus tracks at the end.

Fuck the Facts is a Canadian Juno-nominated, grindcore band from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, formed in 1998. They began as the solo recording project of musician Topon Das. Their earliest recording was in January 1997; they began using the name Fuck the Facts in 1998. After many early recordings, including split tapes with groups from around the world, Fuck the Facts began developing a name in the underground with fans of grind. In 2001, the first full-length CD-R, Discoing the Dead, was recorded. The same year, Das would assemble a full band to continue with the project. The band has since coined the terms "bastardized grindcore" and "mullet-core" to describe their sound.
New Junk Aesthetic is the fifth studio album by American metalcore band Every Time I Die. It was released on September 15, 2009. It was the band's first album to be released by their new record label, Epitaph Records. The album artwork was created by guitarist Jordan Buckley.
Kid Gorgeous is an American metalcore band from Buffalo, New York, United States. The group features a conglomerate mix of members from past and current bands Buried Alive (band), Every Time I Die and Anterrabae. Their first album, Friday Night Knife Fight, was released in May 2001. Their second studio album, This Feeling Gets Old, came out in June 2003. Both efforts were released on Southern California indie label Uprising Records. The band originally called it quits in 2003 with their last show being with Snapcase and Every Time I Die in November of that year. With a couple one-off reunion shows since then, the band has recently resurfaced with news in March 2010 that they were going to record and tour briefly in the summer. The band started recording an EP in December 2010 at GCR Audio in Buffalo, New York with Jay Zubricky and debuted two of the songs at their show with Every Time I Die on December 29, 2010. Subsequently, on December 30, 2010, the band released the song "Mermaid With A Switchblade" via their Facebook and Myspace pages. On February 1, 2012, Eulogy Recordings announced that it will be releasing the EP titled "Blue Romance" which includes three new tracks, a re-recorded classic, and a cover on June 5, 2012. It was announced via the band's Twitter and Facebook pages that Every Time I Die frontman Keith Buckley has lent vocals to a cover of Judas Priest's "Living After Midnight" which will be a bonus track on the EP.
