Laura Eveliina Birn (born 25 April 1981) [1] is a Finnish film and TV actress.

Early life and education

Birn was born in Helsinki, Finland. She completed her master's degree from Helsinki Theatre Academy in 2008. [1]

Career

She is most famous for her appearances in the 2003 film Helmiä ja sikoja alongside Mikko Leppilampi and most notably in her role in the 2005 film Lupaus. She has tackled roles in historical dramas, lighthearted comedies, and thought-provoking art-house films with equal finesse. [2]

In the United States, she is best known for her supporting role in the Finnish film Joulutarina (English title: Christmas Story) and A Walk Among the Tombstones .

Her performance in the 2012 film Purge earned her a nomination for a Satellite Award for Best Actress. [3] In 2021 she began playing the role of robot Eto Demerzel in the series Foundation . The second season was released in 2023. [4] [5] Filming of the third season is almost ready in May 2024. [6]

In 2024, Finnish weekly news magazine Suomen Kuvalehti wrote, sourcing publicly available tax records, that Birn is the most highly-paid Finnish actor or actress of all time. [7]

Personal life

In addition to her native Finnish, Birn also speaks or understands English, Swedish, [8] Portuguese and Spanish. [9]

Laura Birn is married and has two children. [10] [6]

Simo Häyhä, often referred to by his nickname, The White Death, was a Finnish military sniper during World War II in the 1939–1940 Winter War between Finland and the Soviet Union. He shot to fame as a result of his debut movie Helmiä ja sikoja, for which he also won a Jussi award.

Purge is a 2012 Finnish drama film directed by Antti Jokinen, based on the novel of the same name by Sofi Oksanen. The film was selected as the Finnish entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards, but it did not make it to the final shortlist. At the 2013 Jussi Award, the film received eight nominations, including Best Film, Best Direction and Best Costume Design. It won Best Actress for Birn, Best Supporting Actress for Liisi Tandefelt, along with Best Cinematography, Best Sound Design and Best Make-Up Design. Birn was also nominated for the Satellite Award for Best Actress.

Joanna Haartti is a Finnish actress. She is best known for her theatrical work, but has also appeared in several films and on television.

Minna-Maria Erika Haapkylä is a Finnish actress. She has won two Jussi Awards; one for the best actress in a supporting role for a 1999 Veikko Aaltonen film Rakkaudella Maire, and another in 2009 for the best actress in a leading role for Kuulustelu, directed by Jörn Donner. Haapkylä was married to actor Hannu-Pekka Björkman from 2002 to 2014. They have two sons. Since 2014, she has been in a relationship with actress Joanna Haartti. They got married in August 2023.

Kikka! is a 2022 Finnish drama film about the Finnish singer Kikka, who died in 2005. The film was written by Maarit Nissilä and directed by Anna Paavilainen. In the film, Kikka is played by Sara Melleri. Paula, Kikka's DJ and journalist friend is played by Elena Leeve, Kikka's husband Henkka by Jakob Öhrman, Ilkka Vainio by Aku Hirviniemi, Juha Vainio by Martti Suosalo and Asko, the boss of the record company by Kai Vaine.

Happier Times, Grump is a 2018 Finnish film directed by Tiina Lymi, based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Tuomas Kyrö. The screenplay was written by Tiina Lymi, Tuomas Kyrö, and Juha Lehtola. The film stars Heikki Kinnunen in the role of "The Grump," replacing Antti Litja from the previous film due to Litja's illness.
