Lawrence Wong (born 5 August 1988) is a Malaysian-born Singaporean actor. After his role in Story of Yanxi Palace (2018), Wong was ranked 35th in the list of most influential artistes in China. [3]

Early life

Wong was born on 5 August 1988 in Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia to a Singaporean father. [4] [5] Wong studied at RMIT University in Australia, and graduated with a degree in mass communications. [6] Wong acquired Singaporean citizenship c.2016. [4]

Career

In his early years as an actor since 2002, Wong's early roles were limited to minor roles in dramas. Wong had also portrayed real-life convicted murderer Lee Chor Pet, who kidnapped and murdered a rich businessman's teenage son in Singapore in 1968 and later executed in 1973, for which Lee's case was re-enacted and featured in Singapore's local crime show True Files . [7]

Wong's notable minor roles in his career came from dramas like Three Wishes , 118 , The Dream Job and Zero Calling . [8]

In The Promise, a Channel U telemovie, he played a rebellious teen who falls in love with an intellectually-disabled girl. Lawrence was nominated for "Favourite Male Character" at the Star Awards 2010.

In 2016, he signed on with a Chinese management company run by Chinese actress Qin Lan and was selected for a role in Love And Passion, a remake of the 1982 TVB classic.

He was cast in Story of Yanxi Palace which aired in 2018, as Hai Lan Cha, for which he received two international awards. [9]

Wong appeared in My One in a Million on Mediacorp Channel 8 in a lead role, replacing Aloysius Pang who died in a military accident. [10]

It tells the story of a soon-to-be-married couple who arrange for their parents to meet for the first time over Chinese New Year reunion dinner. But as the boyfriend is estranged from his mother, he fakes a family to impress them instead.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Kidnapping of Ong Beang Leck</span> 1968 abduction and murder of a businessmans teenage son

On 24 May 1968, 19-year-old Ong Beang Leck, the son of a millionaire, was last seen leaving his house. His family received a call two days later, being told by the caller that Ong was kidnapped and a ransom of S$100,000 was demanded. After a second phone call in the second week of Ong's disappearance, the ransom was reduced to S$20,000 after negotiations, and it was paid for Ong's safe return. However, after the arrest of one suspect, it was established that Ong was murdered and in the midst of investigations and subsequent capture of four more suspects, Ong's decomposed body was discovered in a manhole at Jurong. Five of the suspects were charged in relation to their roles in the kidnapping and murder of the youth, with three hanged for murder while the remaining two were jailed for abetting the abduction and possession of the ransom money as well.
