Some of his novels have been translated into German, Swedish, Norwegian, Estonian and Latvian, and short stories in different languages.

Her first book appeared in 1999, and she has published a total of ten fiction books, five of which are short story collections, three novels and two children's novels. Ms. Istala retired at the end of January 2011, and published her memoirs Cross Appeal and Other Stories of life. She serves as the Chair of the Saima Harmaja Society, commemorating the Finnish poet.
