Leon Emirali (born 4 January 1991) [1] is a British entrepreneur, political consultant and media commentator. [2] [3] Emirali was an adviser to former Health Secretary, Steve Barclay, when Barclay served as Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union and Chief Secretary to the Treasury in the British cabinet. [4]

Early life

Emirali was born in January 1991. [1] He studied at Coventry University and Zhejiang University in China. [5]

Career

Business

In 2015, Emirali founded a digital media agency and was named in PR Week's '30 under 30' in 2017. [6] He was also named as a recommended adviser by Spear's Magazine . [3]

Emirali's shareholding in the business was acquired in 2018. [7]

In 2024, Emirali launched a new consultancy aimed at businesses engaging with politically sensitive subjects. [8]

Politics

Emirali began advising Steve Barclay in his role as Brexit Secretary in 2019, shortly after his business was acquired. Emirali departed his role with Barclay in 2020, following the 2019 general election. [9]

Emirali has also worked with former UK Prime Minister, Theresa May. [3] [10]

In 2019, Emirali stood for election in North Hertfordshire and pledged to donate his councillor's allowance to charities, if elected. [11]

Media

Emirali is a political commentator and appears on BBC News. [12] As a columnist, Emirali has written for The Daily Telegraph [13] and The Times. [14]

Views

Emirali was criticised by Labour Party Member of Parliament, Rosena Allin-Khan, after he called for increased private sector involvement in the NHS. [2] Allin-Khan urged then Health Secretary, Steve Barclay, to explain why he had appointed Emirali as his "right-hand man". [4]
