Leon Wessels (born 19 April 1946) [1] is a South African lawyer, politician, and activist who served in the National Party government during the apartheid years [2] and was one of very few Afrikaner politicians to show public contrition for the acts of that government. [3]
Like FW de Klerk [4] he attended Hoërskool Monument in Krugersdorp,South Africa. After matriculating from that school in 1963 Wessels went on to obtain amongst others the Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree from the Potchefstroom University in 1972 and in 2001 the Doctor of Law (LLD) degree from the Rand Afrikaans University. While an undergraduate he was chairman of Potchefstroom's Students' Representative Council (SRC) and from 1971 to 1973 president of the Afrikaner Studentebond (ASB) a student organisation in which many white leaders served their political apprenticeships.
Wessels entered national politics in 1977 when he was elected National Party member of parliament (MP) for the Krugersdorp constituency,an Afrikaner stronghold. Though increasingly identified as a verligte (a member of the party's more liberal wing) over the next two decades he rose through party ranks to become a Cabinet member, ending this chapter of his political career in the last apartheid administration as Minister of Local Government,National Housing and Manpower.
At the hearings of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission into illegal acts of the country's security forces,Wessels –a former Deputy Law and Order Minister –acknowledged:"I do not believe the political defence of 'I did not know' is available to me because in many respects I believe I did not want to know." [5]
In 1999 [6] he was appointed to the South African Human Rights Commission where he was responsible for monitoring the Promotion of Access to Information Act,2000,a law central to ensuring transparency in government, business and civil society. [7]
His wife,Tersia Wessels became a member of the Gauteng provincial legislature representing the Congress of the People in 2009. [8]
Frederik Willem de Klerk was a South African politician who served as state president of South Africa from 1989 to 1994 and as deputy president from 1994 to 1996. As South Africa's last head of state from the era of white-minority rule,he and his government dismantled the apartheid system and introduced universal suffrage. Ideologically a social conservative and an economic liberal,he led the National Party (NP) from 1989 to 1997.
Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd, also known as H. F. Verwoerd, was a South African politician, scholar, and newspaper editor who was Prime Minister of South Africa and is commonly regarded as the architect of apartheid and nicknamed the "father of apartheid". Verwoerd played a significant role in socially engineering apartheid, the country's system of institutionalized racial segregation and white supremacy, and implementing its policies,as Minister of Native Affairs (1950–1958) and then as prime minister (1958–1966). Furthermore,Verwoerd played a vital role in helping the far-right National Party come to power in 1948,serving as their political strategist and propagandist, becoming party leader upon his premiership. He was the Union of South Africa's last prime minister, from 1958 to 1961,when he proclaimed the founding of the Republic of South Africa, remaining its prime minister until his assassination in 1966.
The Ossewabrandwag (OB) was an Afrikaner nationalist organization with strong ties to national socialism, founded in South Africa in Bloemfontein on 4 February 1939. The organization was strongly opposed to South African participation in World War II,and vocally supportive of Nazi Germany. OB carried out a campaign of sabotage against state infrastructure, resulting in a government crackdown. The unpopularity of that crackdown has been proposed as a contributing factor to the victory of the National Party in the 1948 South African general election and the rise of Apartheid.
The National Party, also known as the Nationalist Party, was a political party in South Africa from 1914 to 1997,which was responsible for the implementation of apartheid rule. The party was an Afrikaner ethnic nationalist party, which initially promoted the interests of Afrikaners but later became a stalwart promoter and enactor of white supremacy, for which it is best known. It first became the governing party of the country in 1924. It merged with its rival, the SAP,during the Great Depression, and a splinter faction became the official opposition during World War II and returned to power. With the National Party governing South Africa from 4 June 1948 until 9 May 1994,the country for the bulk of this time was only a de jure or partial democracy,as from 1958 onwards non-white people were barred from voting. In 1990,it began to style itself as simply a South African civic nationalist party, and after the fall of apartheid in 1994,attempted to become a moderate conservative one. The party's reputation was damaged irreparably by perpetrating apartheid, and it rebranded itself as the New National Party in 1997 before eventually dissolving in 2005.
The Afrikaner Broederbond (AB) or simply the Broederbond was an exclusively Afrikaner Calvinist and male secret society in South Africa dedicated to the advancement of the Afrikaner people. It was founded by H. J. Klopper,H. W. van der Merwe,D. H. C. du Plessis and the Rev. Jozua Naudéin 1918 as Jong Zuid Afrika until 1920,when it was renamed the Broederbond. Its influence within South African political and social life came to a climax with the 1948-1994 rule of the white supremacist National Party and its policy of apartheid, which was largely developed and implemented by Broederbond members. Between 1948 and 1994,many prominent figures of Afrikaner political, cultural, and religious life, including every leader of the South African government, were members of the Afrikaner Broederbond.
The Conservative Party of South Africa was a far-right South African political party that sought to preserve many aspects of apartheid in the system's final decade, and formed the official opposition in the white-only House of Assembly in the last seven years of minority rule. It declined quickly after apartheid ended, before being merged with the Freedom Front in 2004.

A referendum on ending apartheid was held in South Africa on 17 March 1992. The referendum was limited to white South African voters, who were asked whether or not they supported the negotiated reforms begun by State President F. W. de Klerk two years earlier,in which he proposed to end the apartheid system that had been implemented since 1948. The result of the election was a large victory for the "yes" side, which ultimately resulted in apartheid being lifted. Universal suffrage was introduced two years later.
Afrikaner nationalism is a nationalistic political ideology created by Afrikaners residing in Southern Africa during the Victorian era. The ideology was developed in response to the significant events in Afrikaner history such as the Great Trek, the First and Second Boer Wars and the resulting anti-British sentiment that developed among Afrikaners and opposition to South Africa's entry into World War I.
Afrikaans literature is literature written in Afrikaans. Afrikaans is the daughter language of 17th-century Dutch and is spoken by the majority of people in the Western Cape of South Africa and among Afrikaners and Coloured South Africans in other parts of South Africa,Namibia,Zimbabwe,Botswana,Lesotho and Eswatini. Afrikaans was historically one of the two official languages of South Africa, the other being English, but it currently shares the status of an "official language" with ten other languages.

AfriForum has been described as a "white nationalist,alt-right,and Afrikaner nationalist group",though this description is rejected by the organisation's leadership, who refer to themselves as a civil rights group.
Henry Allan Fagan,QC was the Chief Justice of South Africa from 1957 to 1959 and previously a Member of Parliament and the Minister of Native Affairs in J. B. M. Hertzog's government. Fagan had been an early supporter of the Afrikaans language movement and a noted Afrikaans playwright and novelist. Though he was a significant figure in the rise of Afrikaner nationalism and a long-term member of the Broederbond,he later became an important opponent of Hendrik Verwoerd's National Party and is best known for the report of the Fagan Commission, whose relatively liberal approach to racial integration amounted to the Smuts government's last, doomed stand against the policy of apartheid.
The Dakar Conference was a historic conference between members of the Institute for Democratic Alternatives in South Africa (IDASA) and the African National Congress (ANC). It was held in Dakar,Senegal between 9 and 12 July 1987. The conference discussed topics such as strategies for bringing fundamental change in South Africa, national unity, structures of the government and the future of the economy in a free South Africa. The IDASA delegation from South Africa, participated in the conference in their private capacity and would later be condemned by the South African government for meeting a banned organization.
