Lilienthal Island is one of the Donovan Islands, lying just north of Glasgal Island in Vincennes Bay, Antarctica. The island was mapped from air photographs taken by U.S. Navy Operation Highjump, 1946–47, and was named by Carl R. Eklund for Billie R. Lilienthal, U.S. Navy, aerographer at Wilkes Station, 1957. The Donovan Islands are a chain of about 8 islands lying well offshore, about 9 kilometres (5 nmi) northwest of Clark Peninsula in the eastern part of Vincennes Bay. First mapped from air photos taken by U.S. Navy Operation Highjump, 1946–47, they were photographed from the air by the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions in January 1956, and were named after J. Donovan, Administrative Officer of the Antarctic Division, Melbourne, and leader of a number of relief expeditions to Heard Island and Macquarie Island.
Glasgal Island is a small island which marks the southwestern extremity of the Donovan Islands in Vincennes Bay, off the coast of Antarctica. It was first mapped from air photos taken by U.S. Navy Operation Highjump, 1946–47, and observed in 1957 by Wilkes Station personnel under Carl R. Eklund. It was named by Eklund for Ralph Glasgal, an auroral scientist with the United States – International Geophysical Year wintering party of 1957 at Wilkes Station. In later life, Glasgal was involved in stereophonic and ambiophonic research.
Vincennes Bay is a large V-shaped bay, 105 km (65 mi) wide at its entrance between Cape Nutt and Cape Folger in Antarctica, marked by several large, steep glaciers near its head, lying along Knox and Budd Coasts. It was photographed from the air by US Navy Operation Highjump in 1946-47. The bay was entered in January 1948 by US Navy Operation Windmill icebreakers Burton Island and stations in the Windmill Islands in the NE portion of the bay. Named by the US-ACAN for the sloop of war USS Vincennes, flagship of the USEE under Wilkes, from which a series of coastal landfalls along Wilkes Land were discovered and plotted during January–February 1840. Wilkes' chart suggests a possible coastal recession corresponding closely with the longitudinal limits for Vincennes Bay, although pack ice conditions prevented close reconnaissance by the USEE of the coast in this immediate area.
Thurston Island is an ice-covered, glacially dissected island, 215 km (134 mi) long, 90 km (56 mi) wide and 15,700 km2 (6,062 sq mi) in area, lying a short way off the northwest end of Ellsworth Land, Antarctica. It is the third largest island of Antarctica, after Alexander Island and Berkner Island.
The Usarp Mountains is a major Antarctic mountain range, lying westward of the Rennick Glacier and trending N-S for about 190 kilometres (118 mi). The feature is bounded to the north by Pryor Glacier and the Wilson Hills. Its important constituent parts include Welcome Mountain, Mount Van der Hoeven, Mount Weihaupt, Mount Stuart, Mount Lorius, Smith Bench, Mount Roberts, Pomerantz Tableland, Daniels Range, Emlen Peaks, Helliwell Hills and Morozumi Range.
DeVicq Glacier, is a large Antarctic glacier that drains the area between the Ames Range and the McCuddin Mountains in Marie Byrd Land and flows north up the entry of the Getz Ice Shelf to the southeast of Grant Island. It was mapped by the U.S. Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1959–65, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Lieutenant David C. deTwatt, U.S. Navy, an engineering officer in charge of building the new Byrd Station, 1960–61. It is the most famous glacier in the whole of upper Antarctica.
Daspit Glacier is a glacier 6 nautical miles (11 km) long, flowing east-northeast along the south side of Mount Shelby to the head of Trail Inlet, on the east coast of Graham Land, Antarctica. It was discovered by members of the East Base of the United States Antarctic Service, 1939–41, and was originally named Fleming Glacier after Rev. W.L.S. Fleming. It was photographed from the air in 1947 by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition under Finn Ronne, and charted in 1948 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey. It was renamed by Ronne for Captain Lawrence R. Daspit, U.S. Navy, who assisted in obtaining Navy support for the Ronne expedition, the original name being transferred to Fleming Glacier on the Rymill Coast.
Posadowsky Glacier is a glacier about 9 nautical miles long, flowing north to Posadowsky Bay immediately east of Gaussberg. Posadowsky Bay is an open embayment, located just east of the West Ice Shelf and fronting on the Davis Sea in Kaiser Wilhelm II Land. Kaiser Wilhelm II Land is the part of East Antarctica lying between Cape Penck, at 87°43'E, and Cape Filchner, at 91°54'E, and is claimed by Australia as part of the Australian Antarctic Territory. Other notable geographic features in this area include Drygalski Island, located 45 mi NNE of Cape Filchner in the Davis Sea, and Mirny Station, a Russian scientific research station.
Coulter Glacier is a steeply inclined glacier, 5 nautical miles (9 km) long, flowing south from the Havre Mountains, northern Alexander Island, into Kolokita Cove in Lazarev Bay, Antarctica. The glacier was photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947 and mapped from the photographs by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for R.W. Coulter, Master of USNS Alatna during U.S. Navy Operation Deepfreeze, 1969.
Crume Glacier is a tributary glacier, 5 nautical miles (9 km) long, flowing east to enter Ommanney Glacier near the north coast of Victoria Land, Antarctica. The geographical feature was first mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and from U.S. Navy air photos, 1960–63, and named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for William R. Crume, AS1, U.S. Navy, Support Equipment Maintenance Supervisor with Squadron VX-6 at McMurdo Station, Hut Point Peninsula, Ross Island, during Operation Deep Freeze 1968. The glacier lies situated on the Pennell Coast, a portion of Antarctica lying between Cape Williams and Cape Adare.
Deadmond Glacier is a glacier about 6 nautical miles (11 km) long, flowing from the east side of Evans Peninsula on Thurston Island into Cadwalader Inlet. It was discovered by the U.S. Navy Bellingshausen Sea Expedition in February 1960, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Lieutenant Commander Robert B. Deadmond, executive officer of USS Burton Island, forming part of this expedition.
Goff Glacier is a broad glacier flowing from Parker Peak into the head of Koether Inlet on the north side of Thurston Island, Antarctica. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after Lieutenant Robert G. Goff, co-pilot of PBM Mariner aircraft in the Eastern Group of U.S. Navy Operation Highjump, which obtained aerial photographs of Thurston Island and adjacent coastal areas, 1946–47.
Hale Glacier is a glacier about 6 nautical miles (11 km) long, located just east of Mount Simpson on Thurston Island, Antarctica, and flowing southwest to the Abbot Ice Shelf in Peacock Sound. It was delineated from air photos taken by U.S. Navy Squadron VX-6 in January 1960, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Lieutenant Bill J. Hale, U.S. Navy, a helicopter pilot aboard USS Burton Island who made exploratory flights to Thurston Island in February 1960.
Morgan Inlet is an ice-filled inlet about 18 nautical miles (33 km) long, with two branches, indenting the east end of Thurston Island, Antarctica, between Lofgren Peninsula and Tierney Peninsula. The south side of the larger north arm of the inlet is an area of icy rock exposures called the King Cliffs. The east extremity of the wedge-shaped promontory between Lofgren Peninsula and Tierney Peninsula is called Ryan Point.
Long Glacier is a glacier about 8 nautical miles long in the southeastern part of Thurston Island, Antarctica. It flows south to the Abbot Ice Shelf, 14 nautical miles (26 km) west of Harrison Nunatak. The glacier was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1960–66, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Fred A. Long, Jr., an aviation machinist of U.S. Navy Squadron VX-6, who wintered at Little America V in 1957 and was in Antarctica in the 1960–61 and 1962–63 seasons.
Mincer Glacier is a broad glacier flowing from Zuhn Bluff into the southeast arm of Murphy Inlet on the north side of Thurston Island, Antarctica. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after Lieutenant Dale F. Mincer, a co-pilot of PBM Mariner aircraft in the Eastern Group of U.S. Navy Operation Highjump, which obtained aerial photographs of Thurston Island and adjacent coastal areas in 1946–47.
Lofgren Peninsula is an ice-covered peninsula about 22 nautical miles (40 km) long, projecting between Cadwalader Inlet and Morgan Inlet on the northeast side of Thurston Island, Antarctica. The northern extremity of the peninsula is Cape Menzel, a bold rock cape. These features were discovered in helicopter flights from the USS Burton Island and the USS Glacier of the U.S. Navy Bellingshausen Sea Expedition in February 1960, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names. The peninsula was named for Charles E. Lofgren, personnel officer with the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, 1928–30. The cape was named for Reinhard W. Menzel, a geomagnetist-seismologist with the Eights Station winter party, 1965.
Hlubeck Glacier is a glacier 9 nautical miles west of Long Glacier in southeast Thurston Island, Antarctica. It flows south along the east side of Shelton Head into the Abbot Ice Shelf. The glacier was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after aviation radioman Vernon R. Hlubeck, a PBM Mariner aircrewman in the Eastern group of U.S. Navy Operation Highjump, which obtained aerial photographs of Thurston Island and adjoining coastal areas, 1946–47.
Mahaffey Glacier is a glacier flowing into the head of Morgan Inlet at the east end of Thurston Island, Antarctica. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after J.S. Mahaffey, a Photographer's Mate in the Eastern Group of U.S. Navy Operation Highjump, which obtained aerial photographs of Thurston Island and adjacent coastal areas in 1946–47.
Marck Glacier is a glacier flowing into the southwestern extremity of Cadwalader Inlet on the north side of Thurston Island, Antarctica. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after Aviation Machinist's Mate George H. Marck, an aircrewman in the Eastern Group of U.S. Navy Operation Highjump, which obtained aerial photographs of Thurston Island and adjacent coastal areas in the summer of 1946–47.
Savage Glacier is a glacier at the east end of Thurston Island, lying south of Tierney Peninsula and flowing east to Seraph Bay. The glacier was discovered on helicopter flights from the USS Glacier and Burton Island by personnel of the U.S. Navy Bellingshausen Sea Expedition in February 1960. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named the glacier for Lieutenant John Savage, U.S. Navy, dental officer aboard the Glacier, who assisted in establishing geodetic control points in the area.
Levko Glacier is a glacier flowing from Pallid Crest to the eastern end of Thurston Island, Antarctica. It enters Seraph Bay between Tierney Peninsula and Simpson Bluff. The glacier was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after G. Levko, Photographer's Mate in the Eastern Group of U.S. Navy Operation Highjump, which obtained aerial photographs of Thurston Island and adjacent coastal areas, 1946–47.
Lilienthal Glacier is a glacier flowing west into Cayley Glacier between Pilcher Peak and Baldwin Peak, on the west coast of Graham Land, Antarctica. It was photographed by the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition in 1956–57, and mapped from these photos by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1960 for Otto Lilienthal, a German pioneer of flight in gliders.
