Lily Wu (born 1984) is an American politician and former television news anchor,serving as the 103rd mayor of Wichita,Kansas since 2024. A member of the Libertarian Party,she is the first Asian American mayor of Wichita and the only Libertarian mayor of one of the 100 largest cities in the United States. [1] [2] [3]
Wu's parents left China to immigrate to the United States and she was born while her parents lived in Antigua Guatemala in 1984. The family moved to Wichita in 1993. Wu graduated from the International Baccalaureate program at Wichita East High School,earned her bachelor's degree in international business and integrated marketing communication from Wichita State University,and a master's degree in journalism from the University of Hong Kong. Wu joined KAKE as a reporter in 2010. She hosted their morning show from August 2014 to September 2016. [5] She left KAKE in December 2019. [6] She joined KWCH-DT as an anchor and reporter in June 2020 [5] and resigned her position in March 2023. [7]
Wu attended the Charles Koch Institute and completed a one-year associate program. She was a member of the Republican Party,but switched her voting registration to the Libertarian Party in 2022. [4]
In April 2023,she announced her candidacy in the 2023 non-partisan election for mayor of Wichita. [8] She was endorsed by Americans for Prosperity (AFP),the Wichita Regional Chamber PAC, [9] the Wichita Fraternal Order of Police,and former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. [4] [10] Wu raised $440,000,a record amount and number of contributors,and AFP spent an additional $192,000 on her behalf. [10]
Wu finished the primary election in first place and advanced to a runoff election with incumbent mayor Brandon Whipple. [11] She defeated Whipple in the general election,58% to 42% [12] making her the first Asian American mayor of Wichita,Kansas. [13] Newsweek called her win the Libertarian Party's "Biggest Ever Election Win", [14] but the Libertarian Party of Kansas does not recognize her as an official Libertarian candidate. [1] [2] [15] Wu was sworn into office on January 8,2024,in a ceremony at Wichita City Hall. [16]
In her first year,Wu's efforts increased salaries for police officers,instituted rules for reporting gifts,and increased the public's opportunities to attend and speak at meetings of the city council. However,she failed to stop a plan instituting paid parking in Wichita's downtown,decrease property taxes,stop pay raises for city employees,and cut spending. [17]

Kansas's 4th congressional district is a congressional district in the U.S. state of Kansas. Based in the south central part of the state,the district encompasses the city of Wichita,the largest city in Kansas,three universities,Arkansas City,and the State of Kansas's only national airport.
KWCH-DT is a television station licensed to Hutchinson,Kansas,United States,serving the Wichita area as an affiliate of CBS. It is owned by Gray Media alongside CW affiliate KSCW-DT and maintains studios on 37th Street North in northeast Wichita and a transmitter facility located east of Hutchinson in rural northeastern Reno County. KWCH-DT serves as the flagship of the Kansas Broadcasting System (KBS),a network of four full-power stations that relay CBS network and other programming provided by KWCH across central and western Kansas,as well as bordering counties in Colorado,Nebraska,and Oklahoma.

On December 28,2017,a fatal swatting incident occurred in Wichita,Kansas,United States. During an online dispute between Casey Viner and Shane Gaskill regarding the video game Call of Duty:WWII,Viner threatened to have Gaskill swatted. Gaskill responded by giving him a false address for his residence,one that was occupied by an uninvolved person,Andrew Finch. Viner then asked Tyler Barriss,an anonymous online swatter,to make the required fraudulent call to initiate the swatting. Wichita Police responded to the address,and as Finch was exiting his house,police officer Justin Rapp fatally shot him.
