Air Vice-Marshal Lindsay John Irvine, CB , FRAeS is a British barrister and former senior Royal Air Force officer. He was Director of Legal Services (RAF) and the head of the RAF Legal Branch from April 2009 to April 2017. [1]
Irvine attended Robert Gordon's College Aberdeen from 1971 to 1977. He studied Classics at University College, University of Oxford. He graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, which was later promoted to a Master of Arts (MA (Oxon)) degree. He subsequently studied law at City University London and was called to the bar, thereby becoming a qualified barrister. [1]
Having completed officer training at RAF College Cranwell, Irvine was commissioned into the Legal Branch, Royal Air Force, on 3 February 1986 as a flight lieutenant. [2] On 21 July 1988, he transferred from a short service commission to a permanent commission. [3] He was promoted to squadron leader on 5 November 1989, [4] and to wing commander on 5 November 1995. [5] As part of the half yearly promotions, he was promoted to group captain on 1 January 2000, [6] and to air commodore on 1 January 2003. [7]
On 9 April 2009, he was promoted to air vice-marshal and appointed Director of Legal Services (RAF), head of the RAF Legal Branch. [1] [8] He attained a light aircraft flying qualification in 1988 and maintained flying currency throughout his military career. Whilst attending the Royal College of Defence Studies in 2006, he was awarded a Master of Arts (MA) with Distinction in International Politics from King's College London. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws from City, University of London in February 2017. [9]
Air Vice Marshal Irvine was the subject of criticism for his legal advice provided to the Board of Inquiry in the Mull of Kintyre Chinook helicopter crash in 1994 (see Mull of Kintyre Review page 52 paragraph 4.4.11 - https://web.archive.org/web/20110725050734/http://www.mullofkintyrereview.org.uk/sites/default/files/Mull%20of%20Kintyre%20Review%20Report.pdf).
"In our view the legal advice afforded to Air Chief Marshal Day was unclear and inaccurate insofar as it failed to recognise the objective nature of the test, placed no restriction on the power of the higher authority to make a finding different from that made by the Board, and introduced reference to RAF policy. The reference to policy can be interpreted as an assertion that the standard of proof meant what the RAF wanted it to mean. That is manifestly incorrect and in conflict with the intention of paragraph 9. The consequence is that Air Chief Marshal Day and Air Chief Marshal Wratten misdirected themselves in relation to the standard of proof."
In the 2014 New Year Honours, Irvine was appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB). [10]
Air Marshal David Walker, was a senior Royal Air Force officer. He was the Deputy Commander, Allied Joint Force Command at Brunssum in the Netherlands from 2011 to 2013, having previously served for over three years as Deputy Commander, Allied Air Component Command at Ramstein in Germany. Prior to that appointment he was Air Officer Commanding No. 1 Group in the United Kingdom.

It consists of solicitors and barristers qualified in a Commonwealth jurisdiction. DLS is headquartered at Air Command RAF High Wycombe. Air Marshal Sir Stuart David Atha,, is a former senior officer of the Royal Air Force. He led No. 3 (Fighter) Squadron from 2000 to 2004, which included deployment to Iraq on Operation Telic, commanded RAF Coningsby (2006–08), No. 83 Expeditionary Air Group (2009–10) and No. 1 Group (2011–14), and served as the Air Component Commander for security during the 2012 London Olympics. Atha was RAF Deputy Commander Operations from 2016 to 2019.

Air Marshal Gregory Jack Bagwell, is a retired senior Royal Air Force (RAF) commander who served as Deputy Commander (Operations) at RAF Air Command.
Air Marshal Edward Jackson Stringer, is a retired Royal Air Force officer. Since April 2018 he has served as Director-General of the Defence Academy. He also served as Director-General of Joint Force Development, Strategic Command from April 2018 to March 2021. He served as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff from April 2013 to January 2015, and as Assistant Chief of the Defence Staff (Operations) from March 2015 to 2018.
Air Vice-Marshal Ranald Torquil Ian Munro, is the General Counsel for Lombard International Assurance, a life insurance company; he was a senior officer in the Army Reserve before transferring to the Royal Auxiliary Air Force.
Raymond Jackson Pentland, is a British Church of England priest. He is a retired military chaplain, having served as Chaplain-in-Chief of the Royal Air Force and head of its Chaplains Branch from 2009 to 2014.

Peter Watson Mills, CB is a British minister of the Church of Scotland and a retired senior Royal Air Force officer. He served as Chaplain-in-Chief of the RAF and head of its Chaplains Branch from 2006 to 2009.
Air Vice-Marshal Christopher James Luck is a British charity executive and retired Royal Air Force officer. He was Commandant of the Royal Air Force College Cranwell from 2013 to 2016, and Commandant of the Joint Services Command and Staff College from 2017 to 2019. Since 2019, he has been CEO of the Shaw Trust.

Between July 2018 and July 2022 he served as Chaplain-in-Chief of the Royal Air Force Chaplains Branch and Archdeacon for the Royal Air Force.
