Lira University (LU) is a university in Uganda. It is one of the eleven public universities and degree-awarding institutions in the country. [3] It was initially established in 2009 as a constituent college of Gulu University and attained autonomy as a fully-fledged public university through an Act of Parliament under Statutory Instrument 2015 No. 35 on July 16, 2015. Lira University was founded with a focus on health sciences and hosts the first university teaching hospital in Uganda. [4]

Vision

The university's vision is to become “a Beacon Centre of Applied Science and Technology.” [5]

Mission

The mission of Lira University is “to provide access to quality higher education, research, and to conduct professional training for the delivery of appropriate health services directed towards sustainable health, community, and environment.” [6]

Location

The university campus is located on approximately 500 acres (202 ha) of land, about 11 kilometres (7 mi), by road, northwest of downtown, Lira off of the Lira–Kamdini Road. [7] The coordinates of the university campus are 2°15'04.0"N, 32°49'16.0"E (Latitude:2.251111; Longitude:32.821111). [8]

History

The university first opened in August 2012 with 100 students. [1] At that time, the institution was a constituent college of Gulu University and was known as Gulu University Constituent College Lira. [9] It was also referred to as Lira University College. [10]

In June 2015, the Uganda Ministry of Education elevated the college to university status, effective with the 2016-17 academic year that began in August 2016. [11]

As of 2021, 11 universities in Uganda offer medical schools. Admission to medical school requires the candidate to have attained a Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) as well as proficiency in Biology or Zoology, Chemistry and Physics at A-level standards. Training leading to the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) lasts five years. Major examinations are conducted after the first, second and fifth year, with additional evaluations after each clinical rotation. After successful completion of the fifth year, candidates complete a year of internship under the supervision of specialists. Postgraduate training is available at Makerere University School of Medicine and other Public and Private Universities in a number of medical and surgical disciplines. The training takes three to four years and leads to the Master of Medicine (MMed) degree. The East, Central and Southern Africa College of Health Sciences is nowadays another alternative postgraduate training pathway in Uganda, such as Membership [MCS (ECSA)] and Fellowship [FCS (ECSA)] of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA); as well as in Internal Medicine through the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Physicians (ECSACOP) and the College of Obstetrics and Gynecology of East, Central and Southern Africa (ECSACOG) for Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Victoria University Uganda (VUU), also known as Victoria University Kampala, is a chartered University by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). It offers short, professional, diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Kampala International University School of Health Sciences is the school of health sciences of Kampala International University, a private Ugandan university. The school provides health sciences education at the diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
