Benjamin Josses Odoki (born 23 March 1943) is a former Chief Justice of Uganda,former Supreme Court Justice of Eswatini, [1] and current Chairman of the Committee of Constitutional Experts for Drafting the EAC Political Federation Constitution,the committee drafting the constitution for the East African Confederation. [2] Odoki served as the tenth Chief Justice of Uganda from 2001 to 2013 after fifteen years as a Judge on the Supreme Court of Uganda. [3] [4] He was a State Attorney of Uganda previous to his appointment to the court in 1986. [4]
He was born in Dhaka Village,Busia District,in the Eastern Region of Uganda,on 23 March 1943,in a family with modest means. [4] He studied at King's College,Budo,in Wakiso District,for his secondary school education. He was admitted to the University College,Dar es Salaam,in Tanzania,where he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1969. Later,he received a Diploma in Legal Practice,from the Law Development Centre in Kampala. [4] In 1974,he achieved a Certificate in Development Studies from the University of Sussex,a Certificate in International Law from Geneva in 1975 and a Doctor of Law (LL.D) Degree (Honoris Causa) from the Commonwealth University Belize in London. [5]
He returned to Uganda after his studies in Tanzania. In 1969 he became an Advocate of the High Court of Uganda and was called to the Uganda Bar. The following year,he was appointed a State Attorney and was later promoted to Senior State Attorney a few years later. [4] He also served as Director of the Uganda Law Development Centre. [6]
In 1978,at the age of 35 years,he was appointed as a judge to the High Court of Uganda. From 1981 until 1984 was seconded to serve as the Director of Public Prosecutions. In 1986 he was appointed as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Uganda. From 1996 to 2000,he served as Chairman of the Judicial Service Commission. [7] He became the Chief Justice of Uganda in 2001,serving in that capacity until his mandatory retirement at the age of 70 on 23 March 23,2013. However,he served a three months extension until 23 June 2013. [4] The extension was controversial and generated mixed reactions from the public. [8] [9] He formerly served as a Vice president/ Judge of the Administrative Tribunal of the African Development Bank and Judge of the Supreme Court of Eswatini. [10]
He is married with to Veronica Odoki,and is the father of four adult;Peter Odoki,Phillip Odoki,Dorah Odoki and Joshua Odoki. [4]
He at one time taught at Makerere University Faculty of Law and at the Law Development Centre. He served as the chairperson of the Editorial Board of the Uganda Law Reports. He has written a number of books and has published articles on a number of subjects,including constitutional development,human rights and criminal justice. [4]
In 2012 he received the Gusi Peace Prize International Award in Manila at the Philippine International Convention Centre for Social Justice and Humaritarian Law. [11] He also has the Distinguished Jurist Award by the Nigerian Association of Democratic Lawyers. [5]
Under the Constitution of Singapore,the judicial system of Singapore is divided into the Supreme Court which comprises the Court of Appeal and the High Court,and the subordinate courts,namely the State Courts and Family Justice Courts.
George W. Kanyeihamba is a Ugandan author,a retired supreme court Judge,former cabinet minister,member of parliament and was a chair of the Legal Committee of the Constituent Assembly that made the 1995 Constitution. He was appointed a member of the Supreme Court of Uganda in 1997 and retired in November 2009. Previously,he served as minister of commerce,minister of justice,and attorney-general,all in President Yoweri Museveni's administration. He holds a Ph.D. in law from the University of Warwick. In 2008,Warwick awarded him an honorary LLD.

Julia Sebutinde is a Ugandan jurist. She is currently serving her second term on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) following her re-election on 12 November 2020. She also is the current chancellor of Muteesa I Royal University,a university owned by Buganda kingdom. She has been a judge on the court since March 2012. She is the first African woman to sit on the ICJ. Before being elected to the ICJ,Sebutinde was a judge of the Special Court for Sierra Leone. She was appointed to that position in 2007.

Steven Kavuma is a Ugandan judge and the immediate former deputy chief justice of Uganda. He was appointed to that post on 5 March 2015. From April 2013 until March 2015,he served as the acting Chief Justice of Uganda,pending the appointment of a substantive Chief Justice by the President of Uganda. However,the way Uganda's judiciary is configured,the Deputy Chief Justice is not a member of the Supreme Court of Uganda,but is a member of the Court of Appeal of Uganda.

Solome Balungi Bossa is a Ugandan judge on the International Criminal Court (ICC). Prior to her election to the ICC,she was a member of the Court of Appeal in Uganda,which also doubles as the Constitutional Court in the Judiciary of Uganda. She was elected to a nine-year term on 5 December 2017 and was sworn in on 9 March 2018. Previously she was appointed to a six-year term on the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights in 2014.

The High Court of Uganda,also Uganda High Court,is the third-highest judicial organ in Uganda,behind the Supreme Court of Uganda and the Court of Appeal of Uganda. It has "unlimited original jurisdiction",with powers to try any case of any value or crime of any magnitude. It is also mandated to hear all appeals from all Magistrates Courts. High Court judgements are appealable to the Uganda Court of Appeal.
The International Council of Jurists (ICJ) is a company based in London,England that organizes seminars and conferences in London and India,and gives out awards. It charges fees for membership,conference sponsorship and advertising. In April 2020 its president,Adish Aggarwala,launched a conspiracy theory in which he claimed the Chinese had deliberately launched the COVID-19 pandemic to further its ambitions to become a superpower. The Indian government disowned any connection with the ICJ and its views,but the story created a sensation in the Indian press.
