Lisa Anderson (born October 16,1950) is an American political scientist and the former President of the American University in Cairo (AUC). [1]
A specialist on Middle Eastern and North African politics,Anderson served as the President of AUC from 2011 to 2016 and as Provost from 2008 to 2010. [1] Prior to joining AUC,Anderson served as the James T. Shotwell Professor of International Relations at Columbia University,the dean of Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs,the chair of the political science department and the director of the Middle East Institute. [1] Previously,she was an assistant professor of government and social studies at Harvard University. [1]
Anderson announced her departure from AUC in June 2015. The AUC Board asked her to leave because she removed the two-tier pay scale system that grossly underpaid Egyptian faculty,though they had the same stature as faculty from other countries . Lisa Anderson had an open door policy for students to directly discuss issues with her regarding all aspects of the university and the surrounding political turmoil. Anderson is the former president of the Middle East Studies Association (MESA) and former chair of the board of the Social Science Research Council. [1] Anderson is also a former member of the Council of the American Political Science Association and served on the board of the Carnegie Council on Ethics in International Affairs. [2] [3] She is member emerita of the board of Human Rights Watch,where she served as co-chair of Human Rights Watch/Middle East,co-chair of the International Advisory Board of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and member of the International Advisory Council of the World Congress for Middle East Studies. Anderson holds a Bachelor of Arts from Sarah Lawrence College and a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from The Fletcher School [5] at Tufts University. [1] She earned her Ph.D in political science from Columbia University in 1981,where she also received a certificate from the Middle East Institute. [1] Her academic research focuses on state formation,regime change,and economic and political development in the Middle East. [6]
In 2002,Anderson received an honorary doctor of laws from Monmouth University. [1] In fall 2013,she visited the American Academy in Berlin as a Richard C. Holbrooke Distinguished Visitor. [7] In 2015,she received an honorary degree from the American University in Paris [8] and was elected as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. [9]

Saba Mahmood (1961–2018) was professor of anthropology at the University of California,Berkeley. At Berkeley,she was also affiliated with the Center for Middle Eastern Studies,Institute for South Asia Studies,and the Program in Critical Theory. Her scholarly work straddled debates in anthropology and political theory,with a focus on Muslim majority societies of the Middle East and South Asia. Mahmood made major theoretical contributions to rethinking the relationship between ethics and politics,religion and secularism,freedom and submission,and reason and embodiment. Influenced by the work of Talal Asad,she wrote on issues of gender,religious politics,secularism,and Muslim and non-Muslim relations in the Middle East.
Jack A. Goldstone is an American sociologist,political scientist,and historian,specializing in studies of social movements,revolutions,political demography,and the 'Rise of the West' in world history. He is an author or editor of 13 books and over 150 research articles. He is recognized as one of the leading authorities on the study of revolutions and long-term social change. His work has made foundational contributions to the fields of cliodynamics,economic history and political demography. He was the first scholar to describe in detail and document the long-term cyclical relationship between global population cycles and cycles of political rebellion and revolution. He was also a core member of the "California school" in world history,which replaced the standard view of a dynamic West and stagnant East with a ‘late divergence’model in which Eastern and Western civilizations underwent similar political and economic cycles until the 18th century,when Europe achieved the technical breakthroughs of industrialization. He is also one of the founding fathers of the emerging field of political demography,studying the impact of local,regional,and global population trends on international security and national politics.
Rola Abdulla Dashti is a Kuwaiti economist and business executive and former politician and minister. Alondra Nelson is an American academic,policy advisor,non-profit administrator,and writer. She is the Harold F. Linder chair and professor in the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study,an independent research center in Princeton,New Jersey. From 2021 to 2023,Nelson was deputy assistant to President Joe Biden and principal deputy director for science and society of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP),where she performed the duties of the director from February to October 2022.
