Berger is a surname in both German and French, although there is no etymological connection between the names in the two languages. Hernández is a widespread Spanish patronymic surname that became common around the 15th century. It means son of Hernán, Hernando, or Fernando, the Spanish version of the Germanic Ferdinand. Fernández is also a common variant of the name. Hernandes and Fernandes are their Portuguese equivalents.

Ortiz is a Spanish-language patronymic surname meaning "son of Orti". "Orti" seems to be disputed in meaning, deriving from either Basque, Latin fortis meaning "brave, strong", or Latin fortunius meaning "fortunate". Officials of the Spanish Inquisition in Toledo, Spain, wrote in the 1590s that "this surname Ortiz, although they have few sanbenitos, is in this city a very converso lineage and surname".

Asunción Valdés Nicolau is a Spanish journalist. In 1983 she became the first woman to direct and edit a television news program in Spain. In 1993 she was appointed Director of Media Relations for the Royal Household of Spain, the first woman to hold such a high position with the Head of State.
