Number and awards

Bulgaria produced 39 films, either alone or with other countries, during the 1950s. Four of thоse (Geroite na Shipka in co-production with the Soviet Union, Tochka parva, Zemya and Sterne in co-production with East Germany) got a Golden palm nomination at the Cannes Film Festival. Geroite na Shipka (1955), Pod Igoto (1952) and Trevoga (1951) went on to become some of the most viewed Bulgarian films. Geroite na Shipka got 5,8 mill views and ranks second in the all-time Bulgarian rang-list, Pod Igoto is 5th with 5 mill views and Trevoga – 10th with 3,8 mill. [1]

The most notable actors from the period were Ivan Dimov ("Kalin orelat", "Pod igoto", "Geratzite"), Konstantin Kisimov ("Kalin orelat", "Pod igoto", "Tochka parva", "Geroite na Shipka") and Apostol Karamitev ("Pod igoto", "Geroite na Shipka", "Lyubimetz 13").

<i>Under the Yoke</i> Book by Ivan Vazov

Under the Yoke, with subtitle A Romance of Bulgarian Liberty is a historical novel by Bulgarian author Ivan Vazov written from 1887 to 1888 and published in parts between 1889 and 1890 in a magazine The Collection of Folk Tales and in a single book in 1894. It is set in a small town in Central Bulgaria during the months leading up to the April Uprising in 1876 and is the most famous piece of classic Bulgarian literature. Under the Yoke has been translated into more than 30 languages. The English translation was made in 1894 by William Morfill and published by the London publishing house William Heinemann.

Konstantin Vasilev Kisimov was a Bulgarian stage and film actor born in 1897, deceased in 1965.

Apostol Milev Karamitev (1923–1973) was a Bulgarian actor, popular throughout the 1960s. He finished acting under the guidance of B. Danovski. Later he specialized in Moscow, Leningrad, Prague and Warsaw. His debut was in the movie "Utro nad rodinata" in 1951. Arguably his most famous role was that of the twin-brothers Radosvet and Radostin in the black and white classic Lyubimetz 13. He died before finishing his last film, "Svatbite na Yoan Asen", and Kosta Tsonev had to take over his role.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">1955 Cannes Film Festival</span>

The 8th Cannes Film Festival was held from 26 April to 10 May 1955. The Golden Palm went to the US film Marty by Delbert Mann. The festival opened with Du rififi chez les hommes by Jules Dassin and closed with Carmen Jones by Otto Preminger.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ivan Dimov</span> Bulgarian actor

Ivan Dimov was a Bulgarian actor. He finished the acting school at the Ivan Vazov National Theatre and spent the next 39 years playing on the stage. Meanwhile he managed to star in some of the most prominent Bulgarian films of the 1950s and 1960s like "Kalin Orelat" and "Tyutyun". For his contribution to the cinema Dimov was awarded the title People's artist.

Equinox was a supergroup consisting of Bulgarian singers Zhana Bergendorff, Georgi Simeonov, and Vladimir Mihaylov, and American singers Johnny Manuel and Trey Campbell. They represented Bulgaria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 in Lisbon with the song "Bones", coming 14th with 166 points. The group has been inactive after the contest.
