Journey is an American rock band from San Francisco, California. Formed in 1973 as Golden Gate Rhythm Section, the group originally included keyboardist and vocalist Gregg Rolie, lead guitarist and vocalist Neal Schon, rhythm guitarist George Tickner, bassist and vocalist Ross Valory, and drummer Prairie Prince. [1] Shortly after the band's formation, Prince returned to his previous group The Tubes and was replaced by Aynsley Dunbar. [2] Tickner left shortly after the release of the band's self-titled debut album in 1975, reducing the band to a four-piece. [1] In 1977, the group expanded with the addition of co-lead vocalist Robert Fleischman, who was replaced by Steve Perry later in the year. [3] Dunbar left prior to the recording of Evolution in late 1978 due to frustrations with the band's changing direction, with Steve Smith taking his place. [4]
Following the tour which spawned live album Captured , Rolie left Journey and was replaced by Jonathan Cain. [5] The group took a short break in the early 1980s, before returning in 1985 with Randy Jackson in place of Valory and session drummer Larrie Londin in place of Smith. [6] Mike Baird played drums on the subsequent tour, before Perry later quit after a show on February 1, 1987, leading to the dissolution of the band. [7] Perry, Schon, and Cain reunited for a one-off show in 1991, but didn't formally reform until 1995, with Valory and Smith returning alongside them to record Trial by Fire , released the following year. [8] Perry left the group for a second time in May 1998, having injured his hip and refusing to undergo the necessary surgery to recover. [9] Smith also left the band around the same time, later starting a career as a jazz drummer. [10]
Journey replaced Perry and Smith with Steve Augeri and Deen Castronovo, respectively. [11] Augeri remained until 2006, when he was forced to leave the band due to illness and was replaced by Jeff Scott Soto. [12] After a year with the group, Soto left and was replaced by Arnel Pineda. [13] Castronovo remained until June 2015, when he was arrested for assault and temporarily replaced by Omar Hakim. [14] Steve Smith returned for a third spell in late 2015. [15] In 2020, Smith and Ross Valory were fired by Neal Schon, accusing them of attempting an "ill-conceived corporate coup d'état" in an effort to take control of the band's name. [16] Randy Jackson would return to the band as its bassist alongside its new drummer Narada Michael Walden and its new additional keyboardist Jason Derlatka on May 23, 2020. [17]

Its parent studio album, Escape, the band's seventh and most successful, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and yielded another of their most popular singles, "Open Arms". Its 1983 follow-up album, Frontiers, was almost as successful in the United States, reaching No. 2 and spawning several successful singles; it broadened the band's appeal in the United Kingdom, where it reached No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart. Journey enjoyed a successful reunion in the mid-1990s and later regrouped with a series of lead singers including Arnel Pineda as lead since December 2007.
