Key is a Japanese visual novel video game development studio and brand under the publisher Visual Arts. The video games developed by Key are initially published by Visual Arts and released for Windows; consumer ports are published by Interchannel and Prototype. Key released their debut title, Kanon , in 1999, [1] followed by their second title, Air , in 2000. [2] Both Kanon and Air were initially released as adult games, [1] [2] but Key released their third game, Clannad , in 2004 with a rating of approval for all ages. [3] Key's fourth game, Planetarian: The Reverie of a Little Planet , was also released in 2004 with a rating for all ages, and is described as a "kinetic novel" by the development team because of its completely linear storyline. [4]
Key's fifth game, Tomoyo After: It's a Wonderful Life , was released in 2005 as an adult game and spin-off from Clannad; it expanded on the scenario of the heroine Tomoyo Sakagami. [5] Key released their sixth visual novel, Little Busters! , in 2007 with a rating for all ages. [6] Key's seventh title, Little Busters! Ecstasy , was an expanded, adult version of Little Busters! released in 2008. [7] Key's eighth game, Kud Wafter , was released in 2010 as an adult game and spin-off from Little Busters! Ecstasy; it expanded on the scenario of the heroine Kudryavka Noumi. [8] Key released their ninth game Rewrite in 2011 with a rating for all ages. [9] Key released a fan disc of Rewrite titled Rewrite Harvest festa! in 2012. [10]
Key's 11th game Angel Beats! 1st Beat was released in 2015. [11] Key released the kinetic novel Harmonia in 2016. [12] Key's 13th game Summer Pockets was released in 2018, [13] and an expanded version titled Summer Pockets Reflection Blue was released in 2020. [14] Three kinetic novels were released in 2021: Loopers , Planetarian: Snow Globe and Lunaria: Virtualized Moonchild . [15] [16] [17] Another kinetic novel, Stella of The End , followed in 2022. [18] A four-volume kinetic novel series for the Prima Doll multimedia project will be released between 2023 and 2024. [19]
As of September 2022, 62 versions of Key's 18 released visual novels have been published by VisualArt's. Of the 62, 11 were released with an adult rating, and the remaining 51 had a rating for all ages. VisualArt's has ceased manufacturing 40 versions of Key's 18 games. Key released a box set called "Key 10th Memorial Box" in July 2009 containing six of Key's visual novels with a rating for all ages. [20] [21] The availability of Key 10th Memorial Box was restricted to ordering online. Key released "memorial editions" of their first five games in April and May 2010 with ratings for all ages. Kanon is a Japanese visual novel developed by Key, a brand of Visual Arts. It was released on June 4, 1999, for Windows as an adult game. Key later released versions of Kanon without the erotic content, and the game was ported to the Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable and Nintendo Switch. The story follows the life of Yuichi Aizawa, a high school student who returns to a city he last visited seven years prior, and he has little recollection of the events from back then. He meets several girls and slowly regains his lost memories. The gameplay in Kanon follows a branching plot line which offers pre-determined scenarios with courses of interaction, and focuses on the appeal of the five female main characters by the player character. The game once ranked as the second best-selling PC game sold in Japan, and charted in the national top 50 several more times afterwards. Kanon has sold over 300,000 units across several platforms.
Key is a Japanese visual novel studio known for making dramatic and plot-oriented titles. It was formed on July 21, 1998, as a brand under the publisher Visual Arts, and is located in Kita, Osaka.
Clannad is a Japanese visual novel developed by Key and released on April 28, 2004, for Windows. While both of Key's first two previous works, Kanon and Air, had been released first as adult games and then censored for the younger market, Clannad was specifically made for all ages. It was later ported to the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch consoles. An English version for Windows was released on Steam by Sekai Project in 2015.
Planetarian: The Reverie of a Little Planet is a Japanese post-apocalyptic visual novel developed by Key, a brand of Visual Arts whose previous works include Kanon and Air. It was released over the Internet on November 29, 2004, for Windows, and is rated for all ages. The game was later ported to the PlayStation 2 (PS2), PlayStation Portable and Nintendo Switch, as well as mobile devices. The story centers on a man who comes across a malfunctioning robot in a dead city. The man, known simply as "the junker", stays with this robot for a time and attempts to fix the projector of the planetarium where the story takes place.
Tomoyo After: It's a Wonderful Life is a Japanese adult visual novel developed by Key released on November 25, 2005 for Windows PCs. The game is a spin-off of Key's earlier all ages game Clannad. Key later released versions of Tomoyo After without the erotic content, and the game was ported to the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Switch under the title Tomoyo After: It's a Wonderful Life CS Edition; CS stands for "consumer software". The story follows the lives of Tomoya Okazaki, a young man who recently graduated from high school, and his close friend Tomoyo Sakagami as they start to see more of each other in a romantic relationship.
Visual Arts, formerly Visual Artist Office and previously spelled in English as VisualArt's, is a Japanese publishing company which specializes in publishing and distributing visual novels for a large list of game developers. Visual Arts has developed game engines their brands currently use, including the current engine, called Siglus, and older engines RealLive and AVG32. Visual Arts also handles the distribution of these games. The games published are mostly for a male audience, though they also publish games targeted towards women as well. They are well known for publishing games developed by Key, such as Kanon, Air, and Clannad.
Itaru Hinoue is the pseudonym of a Japanese artist from Osaka, Japan, who is one of the founding members of the visual novel brand Key under VisualArt's. Hinoue's choice of her pseudonym stems from the manga C by Shō Kitagawa; the protagonist in the manga was named Itaru Amano. Before forming Key, Hinoue worked for the company Tactics where she had a hand in the creation of the company's three games: Dōsei, Moon, and One: Kagayaku Kisetsu e. After forming Key, Hinoue has become known for her work on such titles as Kanon, Air and Clannad. Her dōjinshi circle is known as "Soldier Frog". In September 2016, Hinoue resigned from Key and VisualArt's.
Jun Maeda is a Japanese writer and composer. He is a co-founder of the visual novel brand Key under Visual Arts. He is considered a pioneer of nakige visual novels, and has mainly contributed as a scenario writer, lyricist, and musical composer for the games the company produces.
Magome Togoshi is a Japanese video game composer for visual novel studios. He began work as a music arranger in 1999, where he started working for the visual novel studio Key under VisualArt's to produce music for Kanon. Between then and 2006, Togoshi composed music for four more titles by Key, along with other games produced by game brands also under VisualArt's. In October 2006, Togoshi resigned from Key and VisualArt's. He continues working with other visual novel developers.
Yūichi Suzumoto is a male Japanese novelist originally from Shimizu-ku, Shizuoka, Japan, though he now lives in Osaka, Japan. As of 2006, he works for Aquaplus, known for being the publishing company of Leaf. Before going to Leaf, Suzumoto worked at the publishing company VisualArt's as a scenario writer for brands under the company. He is notable for having had a hand in the production of three Key visual novels: Air, Clannad, and Planetarian: The Reverie of a Little Planet.
Love Song is an album containing songs sung by Riya from Eufonius first released on August 31, 2005, in Japan by Key Sounds Label bearing the catalog number KSLA-0019. The album contains one disc with thirteen tracks composed and produced by Jun Maeda of Key. Additional participating musicians include Kendi Sato on electric guitar for tracks two and twelve, AchillesKEN on percussion for track seven, and Weisswurst on violin for tracks seven and thirteen. Cover art for the album was provided by Yoshitoshi Abe who also provided illustrations inside the album's booklet. Love Song is a concept album which tells the narrative of love as it heads toward ruin.
Keiko Suzuki is a Japanese voice actress and narrator from Osaka. She voices characters from visual novels, and has been in the cast of five Key titles. She is also known under the name Chisato Suzumori.
Rewrite is a Japanese visual novel developed by Key, a brand of Visual Arts. It was released on June 24, 2011 for Windows PCs and is rated for all ages. Rewrite is Key's ninth game, following other titles such as Kanon, Air, and Clannad. Key released a fan disc expanding on the game's story titled Rewrite Harvest festa! on July 27, 2012 for Windows. Rewrite was ported to the PlayStation Portable, PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, while Harvest festa! was ported to the PlayStation Vita. An English version of Rewrite for Windows was released by Sekai Project in 2021; they will also release Harvest festa! in English. The story follows the life of Kotarou Tennouji, a high school student with superhuman abilities who investigates supernatural mysteries with five girls from his school in the fictional city of Kazamatsuri. This ultimately leads him into the middle of a conflict between familiar summoners and superhumans with the fate of the world at stake.
Yūhi o Miteiru ka?' is Japanese idol group AKB48's eighth single, and the sixth major single released through DefSTAR Records, on October 31, 2007. Although it reached only number 10 on the Oricon charts, it is considered one of the group's favorite songs.
Romance, Irane' is Japanese idol group AKB48's ninth single, and the seventh major single released through DefSTAR Records, on January 23, 2008. This song was sung with 16 "Senbatsu" members, six members more than the previous single "Yūhi o Miteiru ka?". Therefore, five members were chosen as Senbatsu members again, and Ayaka Kikuchi was selected for the first time.

"Rinkaku" is the 28th single by Japanese heavy metal band Dir En Grey, released on December 19, 2012. Its highest ranking reached fourth place on the weekly Oricon chart. The original cover art is created by vocalist Kyo, which was shown at various venues in Japan after release of the single.
Kaginado is a Japanese anime television series produced by Liden Films Kyoto Studio. The series aired from October to December 2021. A second season aired from April to June 2022.
