Mingxing was a film production company based in Shanghai, the Republic of China. Between its establishment in 1922 and 1938, the year after it closed in the face of the Second Sino-Japanese War, it released 174 narrative films. The company's output consisted of 128 silent films and 46 sound films. Of the company's productions, 69 were directed or co-directed by Zhang Shichuan; another 55 were credited to Zheng Zhengqiu. [1]
Co-founded by the dramatists and media entrepreneurs Ren Jinping, Zhang Shichuan, Zheng Zhegu, Zheng Zhengqiu, and Zhou Jianyun, [2] Mingxing had its first theatrical releases – a double feature of the short comedies The King of Comedy Visits Shanghai and Labourer's Love – at the Olympic Theatre on 7 October 1922. [3] After two further unsuccessful releases, the company was in dire financial straits. [4] This changed following the release of Orphan Rescues Grandfather (1923), a full-length melodrama that screened to full cinemas in Shanghai and was later distributed throughout China and Southeast Asia. [5] As Mingxing expanded its facilities and began offering shares, [6] it increased its production from three films in 1924 to sixteen in 1928. [1] These included further melodramas with moral lessons and, [7] later, wuxia (martial arts) films. [8] The company's productions expanded to include leftist cinema following the arrival of screenwriters such as Qian Xingcun and Xia Yan in the 1930s. [a] [9]
On 15 March 1931, Mingxing released Sing-Song Girl Red Peony – the first full sound film produced in China. [b] [10] In subsequent years, Mingxing continued to produce silent and sound films in conjunction, with its final silent film –Season of Falling Flowers – being released on 27 April 1935. [1] Though experiencing some economic difficulties, Mingxing continued to expand, opening a second studio in June 1936. However, with the escalation of the Second Sino-Japanese War, including the Japanese occupation of Shanghai, the studio was forced to close in 1937. Several already-completed films were screened the following year. [11]
The majority of Mingxing's 174 films, as with most early Chinese films, are considered lost. [1] Early films were shot on volatile nitrate film, which was easily destroyed, and many experienced material degradation. Further contributing to the loss of historical films were internal turbulence and international conflict; for instance, Mingxing's warehouse was damaged during the Japanese bombing of Shanghai in 1932. Twenty-four productions are known to have survived, [1] including Labourer's Love, the oldest surviving Chinese film. [12] Some films, such as An Amorous History of the Silver Screen (1931), are known only to have survived in the China Film Archive, [13] while others, such as The Classic for Girls (1934), have seen home release. [14]
This list is divided into two tables, one for Mingxing's silent films and one for its sound films. Each table is sorted by release date by default, with further sorting capability in certain fields. Titles are given in English-language translations as well as traditional and simplified Chinese. Films are presented together with their director(s), whose names are rendered using the Chinese naming scheme wherein the surname precedes the given name. The list only counts fictional films produced by the company and does not include films from other genres, such as actualities.

Laborer's Love is a classic silent comedy short film produced in China during the Republican Era, which officially premiered on October 5, 1922 at the Olympic Theater in Shanghai. It is also known as Romance of a Fruit Peddler or Romance of a Fruit Pedlar. Even though filmmaking in China began in the 1890's, Laborer's Love is the earliest complete film from China's early cinematic history that is available today. The film was also one of the earliest productions of the soon-to-be prolific Mingxing Film Company and was directed and written by Mingxing co-founders Zhang Shichuan and Zheng Zhengqiu. Notably, the film has both Chinese and English intertitles, indicating that at this early point in Shanghai cinema history, films were tailored to both Chinese and Western audiences. In addition to the English intertitle cards, the short film further showcased Western influence in Chinese filmmaking, such as taking inspiration from American silent film comedians Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd. Runje Shaw (1896–1975), also known as Shao Zuiweng and Shao Renjie, was a Chinese film entrepreneur, producer and director. The eldest of the Shaw brothers, in 1925 he founded Tianyi Film Company in Shanghai, which became one of the top three film production companies in pre-WWII Republic of China, and the beginning of the Shaw Brothers media empire.
Zheng Zhengqiu was a Chinese filmmaker often considered a "founding father" of Chinese cinema.

Tianyi Film Company, also called Unique Film Productions, was one of the "big three" film production companies in pre-Second World War Republic of China. Founded in Shanghai in 1925 by the Shaw (Shao) brothers led by Runje Shaw, the company also established operations in Malaya and Hong Kong. Although the company's Shanghai studio was destroyed in 1937 during the Japanese invasion, its offshoot in Hong Kong, later called Shaw Brothers Studio, blossomed into a media empire under the leadership of the youngest brother, Sir Run Run Shaw.
Zhang Shichuan, also credited as S. C. Chang, was a Chinese entrepreneur, film director, and film producer, who is considered a founding father of Chinese cinema. He and Zheng Zhengqiu made the first Chinese feature film, The Difficult Couple, in 1913, and cofounded the Mingxing (Star) Film Company in 1922, which became the largest film production company in China under Zhang's leadership.
Ouyang Yuqian was a Chinese playwright, Peking opera actor and writer, film screenwriter and director, and drama educator. He is considered by drama historians as one of the three founders of the modern Chinese spoken drama, together with Tian Han and Hong Shen. He was also one of the top Peking opera performers, regarded as a southern counterpart of Mei Lanfang.
Xuan Jinglin, also romanised as Sie King-ling, was a Republican-era Chinese actress. She was bought out of a brothel and became a successful actress.
Zhou Jianyun was a Chinese dramatist and film entrepreneur. Born in Hefei, Anhui, he travelled to Shanghai in his youth for school before entering the city's drama community through the Qimin New Drama Society and press through the Emancipation Pictorial. With his fellow dramatists Zhang Shichuan and Zheng Zhengqiu, in 1922 he established the Mingxing Film Company, variously serving as its manager, finance director, and film distributor. He spearheaded the establishment of the Liuhe Film Distribution Company in 1928, and in the early 1930s he hired several Communist screenwriters. Mingxing was closed in 1939 during the Second Sino-Japanese War, and although Zhou established several further companies, these were short-lived.
Orphan Rescues Grandfather is a 1923 Chinese silent film directed by Zhang Shichuan for the Mingxing Film Company. Starring Wang Hanlun, Zheng Zhegu, and Zheng Xiaoqiu, this melodrama follows the pregnant widow of a wealthy man who, after her reputation is tarnished, is evicted from her husband's family. Ten years later, her son becomes an apt pupil who saves his grandfather from a plot to steal his wealth.
Wang Hanlun, also known as Helen Wang, was a Chinese actress active primarily between 1923 and 1930. Born to a wealthy family from Suzhou, Anhui, she travelled to Shanghai to attend St Mary's Hall. After a short and unhappy arranged marriage that brought her to Fengtian, she returned to Shanghai where she was discovered in 1922 by Zhang Shichuan of the Mingxing Film Company. Abandoning her birth name Peng Jianqing and severing ties with her disapproving family, she found critical acclaim with her debut film Orphan Rescues Grandfather (1923) and became China's first female film star.
Zheng Zhegu was a Chinese actor and entrepreneur. The son of a Qing official, he served in the military before joining the anti-Qing movement. Forced into hiding, he joined the Republic of China military after the 1911 revolution but left government service and moved to Shanghai after growing disillusioned. Long interested in Peking opera and other forms of drama, Zheng joined several troupes while also gaining a reputation as a stage performer. In the late 1910s, he also became involved in publishing through the Xinmin Library.
The King of Comedy Visits Shanghai, also known as The King of Comedy Visits China, is a 1922 slapstick comedy directed by Zhang Shichuan for the Mingxing Film Company. Depicting a fictional visit by Charlie Chaplin to Shanghai, the film starred Richard Bell in the titular role and drew from Chaplin's popularity in the Republic of China. Released as a double feature with Labourer's Love, the film screened for four days at the Olympic Theatre but did not find broader distribution. It is a lost film.
Sing-Song Girl Red Peony is a 1931 film directed by Zhang Shichuan for the Mingxing Film Company. It follows the actress Red Peony, played by Hu Die, who is trapped in an abusive marriage but feels obligated to persevere. The first sound film made in the Republic of China, production took six months and involved an expansive crew, including language coaches, to surmount the technical difficulties. The film, now thought lost, was well received by audiences.
Civilized drama was a genre of spoken-word and operatic drama that emerged in the late Qing dynasty and remained popular through the early years of the Republic of China. Drawing from traditional forms of theatre and, through shinpa, Western dramatical conventions, the genre emerged in the early 1910s as part of a broader push towards modernization. Major troupes, mostly established by Chinese dramatists who had studied in Japan, were established in Shanghai and found success. The genre peaked in 1917, and fell into disfavour by the mid-1920s.
Zhang Xinsheng, also known as Retribution is a lost 1923 crime film from the Republic of China. Directed by Zhang Shichuan, it was adapted by Zheng Zhengqiu from a real-life patricide in which a deeply indebted man had killed his father for his inheritance. Emphasizing verisimilitude in its production and advertising, Zhang Xinsheng was initially a modest success but was later censored for its graphic violence.
An Amorous History of the Silver Screen is a 1931 film in two parts directed by Cheng Bugao for the Mingxing Film Company. Starring Xuan Jinglin, it follows a courtesan who rises to stardom in the Shanghai film industry, endangers her position for romance, and ultimately decides to earn an independent living through acting. This film, which used Mingxing's studios as part of its setting, has been read as a metafilm featuring biographic elements. Part of the film has been lost, with only 52 minutes of the second part surviving.
Lonely Orchid, also known as Orchid in the Valley, is a 1926 silent family drama film directed by Zhang Shichuan for the Mingxing Film Company. Adapted from a British novel via several intermediary translations, it follows a married couple who are separated after the husband falls for a seductress, but reunite when his disguised first wife returns. The film changed several settings and plot elements to better suit Chinese audiences, and was a commercial success upon release. Now lost, Lonely Orchid was remade by Mingxing in 1935.
The Mingxing Film Company, also credited as the Star Motion Picture Production Company, was a production company active in the Republic of China between 1922 and 1937. Established by a consortium of creative professionals, including film director Zhang Shichuan, dramatist Zheng Zhengqiu, and critic Zhou Jianyun, Mingxing initially produced comedy films that drew little audience attention. Facing insolvency, in 1923 the company used its last capital to produce Orphan Rescues Grandfather, which released to massive commercial success and provided the company with the revenue needed to expand and hire new talent.
Fate in Tears and Laughter is a 1932 Chinese romantic drama directed by Zhang Shichuan for the Mingxing Film Company. Based on Zhang Henshui's novel of the same name, it follows a young student who falls in love with a singer, even as another woman vies for his attention and a relative attempts to arrange him with a third. Filmed in Beijing over the course of two months, Fate in Tears and Laughter was subjected to a copyright lawsuit after its première that delayed screening for three months.
