Mob Psycho 100 is a Japanese anime series based on the manga series created by One. The anime adaptation was produced by Bones and directed by Yuzuru Tachikawa. Hiroshi Seko wrote the scripts, Yoshimichi Kameda designed the characters, and Kenji Kawai composed the music. [1] The series aired between July 12 and September 27, 2016, on Tokyo MX. For season 1, the opening theme song, titled "99", was performed by Mob Choir, while the ending theme song, titled "Refrain Boy" (リフレインボーイ, Rifurein Bōi), was performed by All Off. [2] The series was simulcast on Crunchyroll, while Funimation broadcast the show's simuldub. [3] [4] The English dub was produced by Bang Zoom! Entertainment. [5] On April 18, 2019, Funimation and Crunchyroll confirmed that season 2 would simuldub on April 25. [6]
A second season of the anime series was announced, with the staff and cast returning to reprise their roles. [7] Mob Psycho 100 II aired from January 7 to April 1, 2019, with the series being simulcast on Crunchyroll. [8]
A third season, titled Mob Psycho 100 III, was confirmed to be in production in October 2021. [9] It aired from October 6 to December 22, 2022. [10] [11] The third season's simuldub was slated to be produced by Crunchyroll rather than Bang Zoom! with some roles recast, due to the choice to move dub production to in-person recording sessions at their Dallas based studio, rather than remote recordings, after largely relying on the latter at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. [12] Among the planned recastings was the voice of Mob, Kyle McCarley, who stated that he would likely not be reprising the role as Crunchyroll had refused to negotiate a potential union contract for future anime dubbing productions with McCarley's union SAG-AFTRA. McCarley had offered to work non-union on season 3 under the condition that Crunchyroll have a discussion with SAG-AFTRA, but since this did not proceed, McCarley did not return. [13] [14] [15] This news prompted much backlash and criticism of Crunchyroll on social media. [16]

A self-proclaimed exorcist and fraud named Reigen Arataka attempts to exorcise an evil spirit, despite having only stumbled onto it by accident. Much to Reigen's shock, the spirit seems to only be annoyed by his ineffective attacks, which consist of throwing a handful of table salt at the spirit (meant to be purified salt). Reigen then unleashes his secret weapon: calling in an actual psychic (also referred to as an esper), Shigeo Kageyama, a.k.a. "Mob", to banish the spirit for him with his psychokinetic powers. Mob is an extremely powerful psychic, despite only being in middle school. Some time later, Reigen is contracted to get rid of evil spirits inhabiting a tunnel. Once again, Reigen manages to trick Mob into doing most of the work for him. One of the ghosts, the deceased leader of a biker gang, warns of an even more powerful monster located deeper in the tunnel, and begs Reigen and Mob to not fight it. However, Mob manages to take it down anyway. The spirits of the leader and his gang are finally at peace and move on to the afterlife.

The "Telepathy Club" at Mob's school is in danger of disbanding after it drops below the minimum number of members. The group desperately tries to get other students to join their club, and drag Mob into the clubroom in an attempt to convince him to join. The Telepathy Club's leader, Tome Kurata, argues with Reigen over the phone as he wants Mob to focus on his job instead of the club. Later, Reigen takes Mob on a contract to exorcise a spirit at a private all-girls high school. Both he and Mob cross-dress to infiltrate the school, but Reigen is immediately stopped by security while Mob goes on to meet his clients alone. The clients, a pair of schoolgirls, lead him around the school until he finds the large ghost of a dead schoolboy observing basketball practice on campus. After defeating the ghost, it begs him to enjoy his youth before it disappears. The next day, the student council at Mob's school threatens to turn the Telepathy Club's room over to the newly-formed Body Improvement Club as Mob is about to join. After having a flashback where Mob remembers his poor physical abilities, Mob decides to join the Body Improvement Club instead.

The Telepathy Club, permitted to stay in the room which is now being used to store bodybuilding equipment, comments that Mob will never be popular even if he trains his body. Distraught, he is intercepted on his way home by a woman in a smiling mask, who informs him that she can help him become popular. He follows her to an underground meeting area where a cult known as (LOL) has formed in service to a man with the power to make anyone laugh and smile. A reporter from Mob's school, Mezato Ichi, is forcibly converted, but even the cult leader Dimple is unable to convert Mob. It is revealed that Dimple is a high level spirit possessing a man, and the spirit emerges to kill Mob. The strain causes Mob to reach 100% and "explode", unleashing a terrible amount of psychic power and exorcising Dimple. This frees the converts of the cult.

Delinquents from Mob's school, Salt Middle School, are in a turf war with a rival school, Black Vinegar Middle School. When the rival delinquents are unable to win, they call for their leader, Teruki "Teru" Hanazawa. In spite of being physically unimposing, Teru disposes of the Salt delinquents with ease. In an attempt to get revenge, delinquent leader Tenga Onigawara attempts to recruit the Body Improvement Club into the turf war. When they turn him down, he concocts a plan to get Mob kidnapped by the rival school in order to force the Body Improvement Club to attack their rivals. Meanwhile, Mob has been haunted all day by the weakened spirit of Dimple, who claims to have reformed. As per the plan by the Salt delinquents, Mob is captured by delinquents from Black Vinegar and refuses to use his powers to escape despite urging from Dimple. After recognizing Mob's psychic abilities, Teru attempts to force him into a psychic duel by attacking him, but Mob refuses despite increasingly brutal attacks because of his ideals to never use psychic powers on a human person. Dimple attempts to defend Mob, but Teru quickly exorcises him. As Mob becomes cornered inside the school, Teru's sanity begins to deteriorate after Mob deflects his knives in self-defense which cause Teru's hair to be sheared off. As Teru grows increasingly frustrated with Mob and his sanity weakens, Mob realizes that Teru's hatred towards him is because both psychics lack confidence and know that they are nothing without their psychic powers. Teru chokes Mob against the wall with brute force, where it is revealed that unlike him, Teru's frequent use of his psychic abilities in his daily life quickly established his popularity within his school and gave him a superiority complex, proclaiming himself as a "chosen one". Despite Mob's restraint of his psychic powers loosening as he is strangled, he passes out from asphyxiation before reaching 100%. Unconsciously awakening in "???%" form, Mob rips apart the school and hurls the rubble at a naked Teru, who is blasted off into the sky while apologizing and accepting Mob's ideals. In the aftermath, Mob's realizes that he has used his powers against another person, which results in "100% sadness", where he uses his powers to rebuild the school.

The leader of the Telepathy Club, Tome, takes an interest in the psychic fight and tries to get Mob to identify other Espers in public. Salt Middle School's Student Council president, Shinji Kamuro, confides in Ritsu to frame local gang leader Tenga Onigawara for stealing and being a pervert. Later, Ritsu tours a psychic research institute known as the Awakening Lab, but all of the subjects have minimal and weak ESP abilities. Reigen is miraculously uninjured from Sakurai's attack and proceeds to take on the Scars, where their psychic attacks have no effect against him. It's revealed that Reigen's words of wisdom to Mob just as he was about to go 100% changed the flow of his psychic energy; Mob subconsciously sent his psychic energy into Reigen, thereby "running away", with the psychic energy in Reigen going 1000% with Gratitude. Once he incapacitates Ishiguro, Reigen chastises the Scars for their delusions of grandeur, saying that even with psychic powers they are still human. Reigen's words drag Sakurai and Muraki back into reality. A recovered Ishiguro, however, rejects Reigen's philosophical views by claiming that psychics are elite and superior to the rest of humanity and should be worshipped. Mob counters Ishiguro by saying that having psychic powers doesn't make one popular. Ishiguro snaps and starts gathering psychic energy to destroy the Seventh Division and everyone in it. Reigen loses Mob's psychic energy before he can defeat him, and Shou suddenly appears to knock out Ishiguro. Shou expresses disappointment in Mob, revealing he was sent by his father, the leader of Claw, to oversee Seventh Division's development, before leaving. Dimple finally escapes Matsuo's evil spirit jar and knocks him out. The fight ends and Mob, Reigen, Ritsu, Teru, and Dimple move on with their everyday lives. Sometime later, Mob and Reigen try to hunt down a mythical Tsuchinoko, but Reigen ends up instead gathering a lot of mushrooms. Mob exorcises a spirit that may have been a Tsuchinoko but is told by Reigen they don't exist. |

Dimple recognizes the spirit as Keiji Mogami, a former psychic. While the psychics go in to exorcise the spirit one by one, Dimple explains who Mogami was, warning Mob and Reigen not to get involved. However Mob tries to exorcise Mogami from Minori's body anyway. On the verge of exploding emotionally, Dimple calms Mob down by revealing that the bodies were fake. An enraged Mob starts hunting down the espers, finding two Scars from the main branch of Claw looking for him, none of whom know what has happened to his family. Later on, Toichiro orders Shimazaki of the Ultimate 5 to capture the Prime Minister, which he does effortlessly. Dimple takes possession of Mob's body and escapes, but is forced to fight back when Shibata is about to hurt a crowd of people including Tsubomi. Matsuo comes to Mob's aid but loses the flask he used to seal Mogami to the esper group. Despite his warning, the espers shatter the flask, releasing a very angry and seemingly unstoppable Mogami. When Mogami is about to crush Minegishi, Mob pleads to him to let him live because of how Minegishi can still become a better person. Mogami leaves, giving Mob the advice to be more strict towards others, as this would make Mob unbeatable. The rest of the gang gets intercepted and are quickly defeated by Shimazaki. Sho and Ritsu reach the tower and Sho goes on ahead while Ritsu stays behind to face Shimazaki. Before Shimazaki can deal the finishing blow, Teru and the former Scars appear to assist Ritsu. The fight does not go as Sho had planned when he finds out how his father's power works and Sho is soundly defeated. Mob eventually confronts Toichiro and sees the kind of person he is, beginning their battle. Mob, despite his best efforts, is unable to convince Toichiro, who is completely power obsessed and delusional. Before Toichiro can kill Mob, Reigen arrives and tries to punch Toichiro, but Toichiro dodges and prepares to blow up Reigen, who is barely saved by Serizawa. Mob reaches 100% emotional state, and during the chaos Reigen, Serizawa, and Sho land on the ground with Ritsu and rest of Claw. Mob, showing his kindness to Toichiro, redirects the power into his body, leading to a seemingly smaller explosion that keeps the city safe. In the aftermath, Toichiro admits his mistake and allows himself to be taken into custody, after apologising to Sho. On television, it is shown that the apparent huge explosion actually caused the sudden growth of the broccoli seed that Mob kept in his shirt pocket, forming the Divine Tree. Mob continues to grow more anxious as the festival comes closer with them having made no progress. Meanwhile, Reigen is approached by supposed Yokai Hunter Haruaki Amakusa, requesting his assistance in tracking down yokai known as the "Hundred Demons" located within the city. Due to Amakusa's eccentricities, Reigen doesn't believe him and tries to get him to leave, but accepts to job after he offers him a 1 million yen consultation fee. They make it to an abandoned building, where the basement is covered in mysterious tree roots, and soon discover Amakusa was right and the yokai are real. He tries to fight them off but fails, while Serizawa and Mob take them all on, including the Yokai King and his four generals; all the while this is happening, Mob receives various epiphanies on how to make the haunted house better. Amakusa offers Mob and Serizawa jobs as Yokai Hunters, but they both decline, while Reigen's snide comments inadvertently result in him losing the 1 million yen fee. Mob suggests the idea of creating the Yokai King for the haunted house, which they reluctantly agree too, and that turns out to be a hit.

At school Mob asks Mezato why she didn't show up the previous day, which she claims is because the "true leader" of the Psycho Helmets appeared, so he doesn't have to worry anymore. Several people in the school, including Tome and most of the Student Council begin to suggest that they should take time in praying to the Psycho Helmets and the Divine Tree, to some of the others' confusion. After eating a cookie given to him by members of the Psycho Helmets, Teru suddenly begins to praise the Divine Tree and its leader, before then vomiting it back up, realizing the attempt at brainwashing him. He heads into the Tree to confront Psycho Helmet, quickly identifying him as being Dimple. He tries to fight but he is eventually tired out as Psycho Helmet's power continues to increase. Having realized that the Divine Tree's roots have been spreading throughout the city, causing people to call his office for this problem, Reigen gets Mob to help find a way to destroy the tree. They request help from Ritsu on their way, who also voices his distrust in the Psycho Helmets, but after eating one of the sweets, the brainwashed Ritsu takes the two to a Psycho Helmet meeting, where the other brainwashed members try to coerce them into joining them. Reigen and Mob escape, realizing the whole town has fallen under the Tree's control, and try to make their way over. However, Reigen also ends up falling under its spell, forcing Mob to have to go at it alone. He reaches the entrance where he's met by a host of people, all cheering on Mob as the "original Psycho Helmet".

Mob enters the Divine Tree, where he's met with the pestering voice of "Psycho Helmet", as he states his goals and desires, while questioning if Mob appreciates the attention of the crowd. He discovers the contained Teru and Psycho Helmet, who he recognizes as Dimple. He once again asks Mob to join him in his endeavor, detailing his intention to spread the influence of the Divine Tree all through the world, making his dream of truly being a god a reality. Mob tells him he's merely manipulating people's hearts and frees Teru to help him, however Teru is also shown to be under his control and begins to fight Mob to defend the Divine Tree. Mob is able to blast Teru out of the tree, but finds while he's facing off against several Psycho Helmet clones that his power is getting weaker, due to being drained by Dimple and the Tree. Dimple transforms into his "God Dimple Form", prepared to go all out against Mob, but Mob claims that he's holding back his power and words, calling him a "fake" which irritates him. Dimple unleashes a powerful attack, all the while Mob's power continues to slowly creep up to 99%, only to be caught completely off guard upon seeing Mob's monkey shirt under his jacket, calling it lame.

After hearing Dimple's comment, Mob reaches 100%, but to Dimple's shock, instead Mob simply releases all of his excess energy into the air, dispersing it all over. Dimple is confused as Mob refuses to fight back when he attempts to attack him, and is further drawn aback when Mob reveals that Dimple has no intention of actually hurting him. Hearing Dimple's remark to his shirt caused him to realize that he still cares for Mob as a friend, and further apologizes for dismissing his dream earlier when he was getting high on his popularity. The revelation befuddles Dimple as he begins to have an epiphany of himself; despite wanting to reach a god-like state, now that he had accomplished it, it was boring, and that wanting Mob to accompany him was all a result of his desire for a real friendship like he had with Mob. Coming around, Dimple declares to give up on the leadership, using his power to wipe everyone's memories of the brainwashing, and helps take the overly exhausted Mob back home. However, he is stunned by the appearance of "Psycho Helmet", the Divine Tree having gained sentience in said image. He uses his god-like power to try and defeat it, but finds himself overwhelmed by the Tree's increasing power as it slowly sucks away his. With his last remaining strength, Dimple gets an unaware Mob to escape the Tree and bring everyone home. Later that night, the news broadcasts the Divine Tree being flung up into space, and while Mob can't remember exactly what happened, he tearfully thanks Dimple for everything he did.

Toichiro ends up being overpowered, but receives assistance from Sho, and the two work together to try and combat him. When the real Mob within starts to hold his outer self back, Toichiro tries to use this opportunity to seal Mob's powers, even at the cost of his own life. However, not wanting to leave behind his family again, he withdraws with Sho, while "Mob" continues forward. The Body Improvement Club try to help and stop him, but they are blown away, being rescued by Ritsu. He recognizes that Mob's current state is the result of him bottling up his emotions, and declares that he will always be there to lend his older brother a ear, no longer afraid of him. This results in Ritsu reaching 100%, giving him enough power to combat "Mob", but it still isn't enough as he creates a giant tornado to surround himself. Within his mind, Mob confronts his darker self who recognizes itself as "the true Shigeo Kageyama", with Mob merely as a facade, and that he will soon consume the other and be their true self, allowing them to do whatever they want. Reigen and Serizawa continue forward through the storm, but Serizawa is forced to stop due to Mob absorbing his psychic power, so Reigen goes on alone. "Shigeo" continues to consume Mob, telling him he only loves Tsubomi because she was the only one to accept him for his powers, and that part of him shouldn't be shut away. Reigen tries to call out to Mob, but "Shigeo" refuses to listen, considering him a fraud who has just been using him for his powers this entire time. Reigen is constantly blown away by Mob's psychic attacks, but he reveals that he has secretly been training to keep up with him, and charges forward, dodging all the debris. He nearly reaches Mob but runs out of stamina and collapses. "Shigeo" absorbs all of Mob and approaches the entrance to the park, when suddenly Reigen appears in front of him, having been possessed and saved by a returning Dimple, who regained his spiritual form due to Mob's desire to see him again. Reigen speaks to Mob and confesses himself to be a liar with no psychic powers, the shock of which stops Mob's rampage. He continues to apologize, but also tells Mob not to reject the other sides of himself, since everyone is the same way. Hearing his words, Mob returns in the mental realm and he and "Shigeo" form together to become "100% Shigeo Kagayama". With just a lone flower remaining, Mob goes to the park to see Tsubomi, who was waiting for him the entire time there, and rejects him. Reigen comforts Mob as they discuss what to do about fixing the city. Several months later in his third year of middle school, Mob is now the Vice Captain of the Body Improvement Club, training the new recruits. He, Ritsu, and Teru go to Spirits & Such, where Tome now works, with her poking fun at him for still keeping up a friendship with Tsubomi despite being rejected. Several of their friends join them in surprising Reigen for his birthday. He's nearly driven to tears when he falls head first in the cake, causing Mob and everyone to laugh. |

Inspired by an interview he saw on television, Reigen decides to write a book detailing his accomplishments, in order to seek out fame and fortune. He has Mob write out the manuscript as he re-tells the events of the first season, only inserting himself into moments he was previously not involved in, and giving himself credit for the actions of others. Mob questions the accuracy of it all, but Reigen argues he's just exaggerating for dramatic effect. Eventually Mob finishes the writing, and his friends at school decide to be the editors before it is set to print. They read it, painfully reacting to the incredible inaccuracy of the "biopic". Later, Reigen receives the first printed copy of the book and reading it, only to horrifically discover that all his "accomplishments" were edited out, with Mob now the focus and himself barely in it. With his crowd funding campaign only receiving 2500 yen (which were Reigen's own), he uses the money to treat Mob to ramen.

Reigen accepts a job at a hot springs resort that has been getting poor reviews due to visitors' poor experience after travelling through "another dimension" on the way there. Mob, Ritsu, Dimple, and Serizawa accompany him, with his intention of also using the opportunity for a mini vacation. On the train ride there, Reigen and Serizawa fall asleep just as they enter through a tunnel, and when they awaken find themselves in the other dimension. Mob, Ritsu, and Dimple arrive at the hot spring where they meet up with Teru, while also dragging the sleeping Reigen and Serizawa. They are encouraged by the head of the springs to take it easy for the day, where they learn of the spirit Ihoben, famous for blocking the entrance to a parallel world where they are. Reigen desperately tries to figure out what is up in the other dimension but finds himself stuck in a never-ending loop on the train, while Serizawa learns he can travel in and out with ease. After many days trapped alone on the train, with it being just a few hours in the real life, Reigen figures out what Serizawa has been doing and gets him to bring Mob and the others to help. They are able to deduce that the issue is regarding a spiritual essence that is clogging up Ihoben, and swiftly dispose of it, returning to the real world. Dimple figures out that the owners of the hot springs are descendants of Ihoben and possess latent psychic powers, and the distortion was due to her catching a cold. With the mystery solved, Reigen and the crew make their way back home the following day, with Reigen once again falling asleep in the tunnel, just as one of the elders of the hot springs catches a cold. |
