In 1997, Telkom, the South African telecommunications parastatal, was partly privatised and entered into a strategic equity partnership with a consortium of two companies, including SBC, a U.S. telecommunications company. In exchange for exclusivity to provide certain services for 5 years, Telkom assumed an obligation to facilitate network modernisation and expansion into the unserved areas.

Radio and TV broadcasting in Pretoria is supplied via a network of VHF/FM and UHF transmitters and repeaters owned and operated by Sentech - South Africa's state-owned broadcast signal distributor - from four transmitter sites in and around the city. DStv Select 1 is a DStv bouquet of selected TV channels from MultiChoice, a multi-channel digital satellite TV service in Africa. In addition to the TV channels there were selected DMX music and radio channels. By 2010, Select 1 had 34 TV channels and 32 radio channels with a monthly subscription fee of R148 per month. In April 2013, DStv announced that it would be discontinuing the DStv Select 1 and Select 2 bouquets and launch a new package known as DStv Family. In April 2015, DStv increased the prices on all packages with DStv Select having a monthly subscription fee of R199 for viewers who were still on the package.

In radio, Maggs co-presented SAfm's weekday afternoon current affairs programme, PM Live, as well as being the host of the Sunday morning media and advertising show, Media @ SAFM which focused on the advertising and communications industry. The programme ran for ten years and Maggs refers to it as his "great joy". He also is an editor, publishing The Annual; a hardcover of the yearly business in the media. In 2014, Maggs joined POWER 98.7 as a radio host of a new slot called Best of POWER - which shines the spotlight on media innovation, technology, trends, culinary inspiration and travel.

He was the host of the reality TV dance competition Step Up or Step Out for two seasons and a host of the early-morning TV show Dagbreek on DSTV's Kyknet channel. Lance has also performed as a presenter on television shows such as High School Musical, Spotlight South Africa, 20-Something, Pap Idols, and Bling. He released his debut album in 2006, titled Be Your Man, along with a single of the same name. He completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Financial Accounting at the University of Cape Town in 2004 and a Master of Business Leadership degree in 2014 through the University of South Africa (Unisa) Graduate School of Business Leadership.
