The chancellor of the University of Illinois Chicago is the principal administrative officer of the university and a member of the faculty of each of its colleges, schools, institutes and divisions. The chancellor is appointed by the Board of Trustees following nomination by the president of the University of Illinois System. The chancellor performs those duties that are assigned by the president and that are consistent with the actions of the Board of Trustees. The chancellor is assisted by vice-chancellors for academic affairs, administrative affairs, campus affairs, and research. [2] In September 1982, the University of Illinois System consolidated its two Chicago campuses, the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle and the University of Illinois at the Medical Center, to form the University of Illinois at Chicago. [3] Donald N. Langenberg served as its first chancellor in 1983, and there have been 10 chancellors in total. The current chancellor is Dr. Marie Lynn Miranda, who has been serving since July 2023. [4]

Richard H. Herman is a mathematician, currently Professor Emeritus of Mathematics, who had served as the Chancellor of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 2005-2009. He previously served there as Provost and Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs since 1998. As provost he garnered support for, and administered, a “faculty excellence” program designed to bring established faculty to the institution. Throughout his administrative tenure, sponsored research at the university increased by more than 50%.

John T. Wolfe Jr. is an American higher education consultant and retired administrator. He served as president of Kentucky State University from 1990 to 1991; and president of Savannah State College from 1993 until 1997.

Donald Newton Langenberg was an American physicist, academic, and university administrator. He served as chancellor of the University System of Maryland from 1990 until 2002 and was the first chancellor of the University of Illinois at Chicago. Langenberg taught at the University of Oxford, the École Normale Supérieure, the California Institute of Technology, and the Technische Universität München and served on the board of trustees at the University of the District of Columbia and the University of Pennsylvania.
