Graham Waterhouse is a cellist and contemporary composer who was born in London and resides in Germany. His compositions focus on chamber music. They have been performed and recorded internationally. As a cellist, he has written for his own instruments and other string instruments, but being the son of bassoonist William Waterhouse, he has also been familiar with double reed instruments, and several works were commissioned by the International Double Reed Society (IDRS), usually first performed at their annual conventions. He has run a series of chamber music concerts at the Gasteig in Munich, where several works received their premiere. His first notable composition, the first movement of his String Sextet, Op. 1, was written in 1979, and a duo for two violins, Fantasia Ucraina, in 2022. [1]

The years of composition follow those given on the composer's website. Works of the chamber music genre are further distinguished as solo, duo, trio, quartet, quintet, sextet, nonet and ensemble. The recordings list three portrait CDs, CD1 in 2001, [2] CD2 in 2004, [3] [4] and CD3 in 2021. [5] [6] Additionally, some works have been recorded individually.

Waterhouse has had his works published by various publishing houses. Several of them are now represented by Schott Music (Schott), his principal publisher from 2019, including Accolade Musikverlag (Accolade), Robert Lienau Musikverlag (Lienau) and Zimmermann Musikverlag (Zimmermann). [1] Works listed by Schott are marked by an S for further information. His first publisher was Friedrich Hofmeister Musikverlag, Leipzig (Hofmeister), marked by an F. [7] Several works for speaking voice and cello were published by Heinrichshofen Verlag (Heinrichshofen), marked H. [8] Breitkopf & Härtel (Breitkopf) have published pedagogic works, marked B. [9]

Recording details

Compositions by Waterhouse have been recorded on three portrait CDs and several other collections.

The first portrait CD, Graham Waterhouse, of chamber music for recorder, clarinet, cello and piano, was released by Cybele Records in 2001, containing: [2]

Celtic Voices and Hale Bopp, op. 36, are two independent compositions by Graham Waterhouse for string orchestra, which were published together in 1998 by Hofmeister, Leipzig. Celtic Voices was written in 1995, Hale Bopp was written in 1997 inspired by Comet Hale-Bopp, and scored for an additional boy soprano.

Der Handschuh is a composition by Graham Waterhouse. He wrote the setting of Friedrich Schiller's ballad for cello and speaking voice in 2005. It was published in 2007 in Heinrichshofen's Verlag.

<i>Three Pieces for Solo Cello</i>

Three Pieces for Solo Cello op. 28, is a composition for cello in three movements by Graham Waterhouse, dedicated to cellist Siegfried Palm in 1992. The composer, a cellist himself, wrote it to "exploit the characteristics" of his instrument. In 1996, a revised version won a composition prize and was performed at the Hochschule für Musik München. The work was published by the Friedrich Hofmeister Musikverlag in 1996 and recorded on a Portrait CD of chamber music in 2001.

<i>Rhapsodie Macabre</i> Piano quintet by Graham Waterhouse

Rhapsodie Macabre is a composition for piano and string quartet in one movement by Graham Waterhouse, written in 2011 as a homage to Franz Liszt. It was first performed at a Liszt festival of the Gasteig, Munich, with the composer playing the cello part.

The Cello Concerto, Op. 27, is a concerto for cello and orchestra by Graham Waterhouse, composed in 1990. It was first performed in 1995 in Toluca and Mexico City with the composer as the soloist, and published by Friedrich Hofmeister Musikverlag in Leipzig in 2000.

Chieftain's Salute is a concerto in one movement for Great Highland Bagpipe and orchestra by Graham Waterhouse. The work is one of few to use the bagpipe with a classical orchestra. A version for bagpipe and string orchestra, Op. 34a, was composed in 2001. It is based on an earlier work for bagpipe and string quartet. Jacobean Salute was also derived from the early work, with a wind quintet replacing the bagpipe, published in 2003. A version for bagpipe and orchestra was composed and first performed in 2015.

Skylla and Charybdis is a 2014 composition for piano quartet by Graham Waterhouse, played in four movements without a break. The title refers to Scylla and Charybdis, two sea monsters from Greek mythology. In performances in German-speaking countries, it has also appeared in English surroundings as Between Scylla and Charybdis.

Variations for Cello Solo is a composition written by Graham Waterhouse in 2019. The variations depict characters of personalities. The cellist and composer performed the world premiere in Vienna in 2020. The composition was published by Schott the same year.

Vier Epigraphe nach Escher, Op. 35, is a chamber music composition by Graham Waterhouse, written in 1995 for viola, heckelphone and piano. Its four movements refer to graphic artworks by M. C. Escher. It was commissioned by Dr. Gunter Joppig and premiered in Munich in 1995. The piece was published by Hofmeister in 1998 and first performed in the U.S. in the same year.
