The Assiniboine River is a 1,070-kilometre (660 mi) river that runs through the prairies of Western Canada in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. It is a tributary of the Red River. The Assiniboine is a typical meandering river with a single main channel embanked within a flat, shallow valley in some places and a steep valley in others. Portage la Prairie is a small city in the Central Plains Region of Manitoba, Canada. As of 2016, the population was 13,304 and the land area of the city was 24.68 square kilometres (9.53 sq mi). Portage la Prairie is approximately 75 kilometres (47 mi) west of Winnipeg, along the Trans-Canada Highway, and sits on the Assiniboine River, which flooded the town persistently until a diversion channel north to Lake Manitoba was built to divert the flood waters. The city is surrounded by the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie.

Provincial Trunk Highway 1 is Manitoba's section of the Trans-Canada Highway. It is a heavily used, 4-lane divided highway, with the exception of a short 18 km section in the southeastern corner of the province. It is the main link between southern Manitoba's largest cities, and also serves as the province's main transportation link to the neighbouring provinces of Saskatchewan and Ontario. The highway is the only major east-west divided highway in Manitoba, and carries a large majority of east-west traffic within and through the province. It has full freeway status sections at Portage la Prairie and Winnipeg. The total distance of the Trans-Canada Highway in Manitoba is approximately 490 km (300 mi).
Provincial Trunk Highway 1A is the name used for two provincial primary highways located in the Canadian province of Manitoba. One is located within the city of Portage la Prairie and the other, within and west of the city of Brandon.
Baldur is an unincorporated community recognized as a local urban district in the Canadian province of Manitoba, located in the Rural Municipality of Argyle. Baldur is the largest community of the municipality, which is in southwestern Manitoba between Brandon and Portage la Prairie. The community is named after the Norse god Baldur.

The 1942 Memorial Cup final was the 24th junior ice hockey championship of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association. The George Richardson Memorial Trophy champions Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey Association in Eastern Canada competed against the Abbott Cup champions Portage la Prairie Terriers of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League in Western Canada. In a best-of-five series, held at Shea's Amphitheatre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Portage la Prairie won their 1st Memorial Cup, defeating Oshawa 3 games to 1.

Portage la Prairie is a rural municipality in the province of Manitoba in Western Canada. It surrounds the city of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba's fourth-largest city. Also within the borders of the municipality are the Dakota Plains First Nation and most of the Long Plain First Nation Indian reserves.
Robert Watson was an industrialist and political figure in Manitoba, Canada. He represented Marquette in the House of Commons of Canada from 1883 to 1892 as a Liberal and Portage la Prairie in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba as a Liberal from 1892 to 1899. Watson sat for Portage la Prairie division in the Senate of Canada from 1900 to 1929.
Provincial Trunk Highway 26 is a short east-west highway that begins and ends at the Trans-Canada Highway. The western terminus is located at the eastern outskirts of Portage la Prairie, while the eastern terminus is three kilometers east of St. François Xavier and thirteen kilometres west of the Perimeter Highway. PTH 26 provides access to the small community of Poplar Point.
The 2011 Assiniboine River flood was caused by above average precipitation in Western Manitoba and Saskatchewan. This was a 1 in 300 year flood that affected much of Western Manitoba. The flooding in Manitoba was expected to mostly involve the 2011 Red River Flood but instead the more severe flooding was found on the Assiniboine in the west.
Municipal elections were held in the Canadian province of Manitoba on October 24, 2018. Mayors, councils and school boards will be elected.
