Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts

The Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (founded in 1866 as Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts) is the national academy of Croatia. The Academy's membership consists of full, corresponding, honorary and associate members. Full members of the academy are elected from among scientists and artists who are Croatian citizens, and who have made outstanding achievements in their particular fields. As of 2018, the Academy's statute limits the number of full members to 160. [1]

Miroslav Krleža was a Yugoslav and Croatian writer who is widely considered to be the greatest Croatian writer of the 20th century. He wrote notable works in all the literary genres, including poetry, theater, short stories, novels, and an intimate diary. His works often include themes of bourgeois hypocrisy and conformism in Austria-Hungary and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Krleža wrote numerous essays on problems of art, history, politics, literature, philosophy, and military strategy, and was known as one of the great polemicists of the century. On it Croatian ethnonym and king Demetrius Zvonimir are mentioned for the first time in native Croatian language. The inscription is written in the Glagolitic script. It was discovered in 1851 at Church of St. Lucy in Jurandvor near the village of Baška on the Croatian island of Krk.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Vasko Lipovac</span>

Vasko Lipovac was a Yugoslavian and Croatian painter, sculptor, printmaker, designer, illustrator and scenographer and one of the most prominent artists of the region. He is best known for his minimalist figuration and use of intense, unmodulated and often dissonant palette. With the exception of his juvenile period of geometric abstraction, he remained loyal to figuration throughout his whole career. Exceptionally prolific, he worked in various techniques and was equally skilful in using high-polished metal, polychromous wood, enamel, terracotta or polyester to create his sculptures, reliefs and mobiles.

The Croatian Publishing and Bibliographic Institute was a lexicographic institute in the Independent State of Croatia founded on August 9, 1941. Mate Ujević was its director. In 1944, Dragutin Tadijanović became the literary secretary of the institute. With the creation of communist Yugoslavia in 1945, the institute's work was stopped.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">1895 visit by Emperor Franz Joseph to Zagreb</span>

On the initiative of Croatian ban Károly Khuen-Héderváry, in mid-October 1895 Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph visited Zagreb, at the time the capital of the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia, in order to attend the opening of the Croatian National Theatre. A group of Croatian students used the visit to protest the rule of the Hungarian Khuen-Héderváry as Croatian ban. They were led by Stjepan Radić, who would later form the influential Croatian People's Peasant Party.

Ivo Goldstein is a historian, author and ambassador from Croatia. Goldstein is a recipient of the Order of Danica Hrvatska (2007) and the City of Zagreb Award (2005).

Croatian literature refers to literary works attributed to the medieval and modern culture of the Croats, Croatia, and Croatian. Besides the modern language whose shape and orthography was standardized in the late 19th century, it also covers the oldest works produced within the modern borders of Croatia, written in Church Slavonic and Medieval Latin, as well as vernacular works written in Čakavian and Kajkavian dialects.

Josip Bratulić is a Croatian philologist and a historian of literature and culture.

Franjo Kajfež was a Croatian chemist. Graduated (1959) and Ph.D. (1968) at the Faculty of Technology in Zagreb. Work at the Pliva factory in Zagreb (1960) was director of the Institute of Medicines in Novi Sad, Slovenia (1961–71) and director of the CRC Development Research Society in Switzerland (1971–1979). He was involved in the synthesis of organic compounds, especially chemical drugs. He was Minister of Industry, Naval Architecture and Energy (1992–1993), County of Krapina-Zagorje County (1993–1995) and Counselor of the President of the Republic for Local Self-Government and Technological Development (1995–2000). He was the owner of 88 patents and the author of 150 scientific papers.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Alfred Krupa</span> Yugoslavian painter, inventor and sportsman

Alfred Krupa was a prominent Yugoslavian and Croatian academic painter, inventor, sportsman and art teacher born in Mikolow now in Poland then in German Empire. Since 1943 he has lived in Croatia, Yugoslavia.

Vladimir Sachs-Petrović was a Jewish-Croatian politician and lawyer. Sachs-Petrović obtained doctoral degree from the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb in 1905. He was a prominent member of the Party of Rights.
