Alytus is a city with municipal rights in southern Lithuania. It is the capital of Alytus County. The population as of July 2023 was 52,256. Alytus is the historical centre of the Dzūkija region. The city lies on the banks of the Nemunas River. The major roads linking Vilnius, Kaunas, Lazdijai, and Hrodna in Belarus pass through Alytus.
Tauragė is an industrial city in Lithuania, and the capital of Tauragė County. In 2020, its population was 21,520. Tauragė is situated on the Jūra River, close to the border with the Kaliningrad Oblast, and not far from the Baltic Sea coast.

Jeronimas Plečkaitis was a Lithuanian politician. He was a member the national parliament, the Seimas, from 1920 to 1927, representing the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania. After the military coup d'état of December 1926, Plečkaitis became an active member of the opposition to President Antanas Smetona and Prime Minister Augustinas Voldemaras. He participated in the failed Tauragė Revolt in September 1927 and fled abroad to avoid arrest. He organized a group of men, known as plečkaitininkai, that received assistance from Poland and continued to plot against the Lithuanian government. He was arrested by the German police in September 1929 and sentenced to three years in prison. He was arrested again by Lithuania in 1940. In 1944, he was arrested by the Soviet authorities and sent to a Gulag camp in the Tyumen Oblast. He returned to Lithuania in 1955.
The Tauragė Revolt was an anti-government revolt that took place in Tauragė, Lithuania on 9 September 1927. Members of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania and Lithuanian Popular Peasants' Union wanted to remove President Antanas Smetona from power. The rebels took control of Tauragė, the revolt spread to neighboring villages and their forces grew to 200 men. However, the revolt was poorly prepared and was suppressed the same day by units of the Lithuanian Army that arrived from Klaipėda. In the aftermath, over 300 people were arrested and 11 were executed. A group of rebels escaped abroad where they became known as plečkaitininkai and, with the help from Poland, continued to plot against Smetona's regime until the mid-1930s. It was one of 13 attempts to overthrow Smetona's regime in 1926–1938.
Matas Jogėla is a Lithuanian professional basketball player for Río Breogán of the Liga ACB. A native of Tauragė, he has competed with the Lithuania under-18 team, winning a silver medal.
The Lithuanian Women's Union was a women's organization active in Lithuania from 1922 to 1933. The First Congress of Lithuanian Women held in 1907 called for the establishment of the union, but it was not accomplished due to conflicts between Catholic clergy and socialists. The union was officially established in 1922 and initially chaired by Felicija Bortkevičienė. The union was supported by the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania and the Peasant Union, opponents of the authoritarian President Antanas Smetona who came to power in 1926. Therefore, it was in opposition to the government-sponsored Lithuanian Women's Council. The union was officially closed on 10 June 1935.
