Lake Kivu is one of the African Great Lakes. It lies on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, and is in the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift. Goma is the capital and largest city of the North Kivu Province in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is located on the northern shore of Lake Kivu and shares borders with Bukumu Chiefdom to the north, Rwanda to the east and Masisi Territory to the west. The city lies in the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift, and is only 13–18 km (8.1–11.2 mi) south of the active volcano Mount Nyiragongo. The Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda is an armed rebel group active in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. As an ethnic Hutu group opposed to the ethnic Tutsi influence, the FDLR is one of the last factions of Rwandan rebels active in the Congo. It was founded through an amalgamation of other groups of Rwandan refugees in September 2000, including the former Army for the Liberation of Rwanda (ALiR), under the leadership of Paul Rwarakabije. It was active during the latter phases of the Second Congo War and the subsequent insurgencies in Kivu.

Kiliba is a town in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), situated just north of the northern tip of Lake Tanganyika in the Uvira Territory of the South Kivu Province. It is approximately 17 km away from Bujumbura, the largest city and former capital of Burundi, and 25 km north of Uvira. The primary spoken language is Kifuliiru, although Kiswahili and French are also commonly spoken.

The Kivu conflict is an umbrella term for a series of protracted armed conflicts in the North Kivu and South Kivu provinces in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo which have occurred since the end of the Second Congo War. Including neighboring Ituri province, there are more than 120 different armed groups active in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Callixte Mbarushimana is a Hutu Rwandan and former United Nations employee (1992–2001) who is alleged to have participated in the Rwandan genocide of 1994. On 28 September 2010, Mbarushimana was indicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague for crimes against humanity and war crimes allegedly committed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2009. He was arrested in France in October 2010 and extradited to the ICC on 25 January 2011. However, he was released on 23 December 2011 as the ICC found there was insufficient evidence for prosecuting him.
Minembwe is a cluster of several villages located in the highlands of Lulenge, within the Fizi Territory of South Kivu Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). It is situated at an altitude of about 2,500 meters above sea level, in a hilly and mountainous region covered with forests, which provides fertile land for agriculture. It lies approximately 150 kilometers southward of Bukavu. The region is interspersed with myriad streams and rivers that flow towards Lake Tanganyika, the second-deepest lake in the world.
South Kivu Sugar Refinery (SKSR), formerly called Kiliba Sugar Refinery,, is a sugar manufacturing company in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. After a 25-year period of inactivity since 1996, the sugar factory resumed production in March 2021, under new management and a new brand name.
Sucrerie du Kwilu Ngongo is a sugar manufacturing company in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The sugar mill produces crystalline table sugar and maintains a distillery that manufactures rum under the brand Kwilu Rum. It is the oldest sugar mill in the country, having been established in 1925.
Lotokila Sugar Refinery (LSR), also Lotokila Sugar Complex, was a sugar manufacturer in the Congo. The sugar complex comprised a sugar plantation, a sugar mill and a distillery. The industrial complex was established in 1973, as a public private partnership between Tshopo Province Administration, and an undisclosed private Chinese company. The complex closed down permanently in 2010.

Lubarika is a village situated in the hills and high plateaus of Itara/Luvungi groupement in the Bafuliiru Chiefdom, Uvira Territory, in the South Kivu Province of the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. It sits at an elevation of 969 meters above sea level and is near the villages of Murunga and Nyakagobe II. Lubarika is a predominantly agricultural region with large hectares used for subsistence agriculture. Agriculture is practiced by an extensive segment of the population. The products grown are mainly intended for domestic consumption and commercialization. Moreover, fishing is carried out artisanally in Lake Tanganyika by the local population.
