"Listen to Soul, Listen to Blues" is the debut single by Australian electronic music group Safia. It first appeared on the band's SoundCloud, [1] and was officially released on iTunes in December 2013.

Contents

In the annual Triple J Hottest 100 countdown in January 2014, the song came in at number 76.

Background

In March 2013, Safia won a competition to perform at the nationwide Groovin' the Moo festival. [2] [3] The group released three free download tracks on their SoundCloud page, "Stretched and Faded", "Mercury" and "Listen to Soul, Listen to Blues". [4] [5] "Listen to Soul, Listen to Blues" received significant airplay on Triple J [6] and became the band's first iTunes release in December 2013.

Music video

A music video to accompany the release of "Listen to Soul, Listen to Blues" was first released on YouTube on 6 July 2013. [7] The video was directed by Jimmy Ennett.

Critical reception

Hannah Galvin from Purple Sneakers said: "Through the dreamy vocals accompanied by simplistic piano and a whirlwind of beats that is soon harpooned by a wave of dubstep, the contrasting elements combined deliver a soulful slow jam by the electronic trio." [8]

The album was announced alongside a national tour on 30 June 2016. Upon announcement, Safia lead singer Ben Woolner said "Hopefully there should be a song for everyone on the record that fits into their tastes. It kind of explores everything we've done in the past in all those different singles into one."

Rory Garton-Smith, better known by his stage name Elk Road, is an Australian musician and record producer from Perth. He began remixing tracks from Carmada, Kaskade, Britney Spears and Charli XCX which were uploaded to his SoundCloud account. His debut single "Not to Worry" was released in September 2015 and received high rotation on Triple J. Additional remixes were released in March 2016. His Charli XCX remix of Boom Clap was then used by her during her 2016 arena world tour.

Rhys Toms is an Australian music producer and DJ. He is best known for being discovered on Triple J Unearthed and for performing at major Australian music festivals Groovin' the Moo, Summernats, and Nickelodeon Slimefest.

Tom Purcell, better known by his stage name Wave Racer, is an Australian DJ and future bass producer from Sydney. The name "Wave Racer" is adapted from a Nintendo 64 game. Larry Herrington, known by his stage name Carmouflage Rose, is an Australian musician, singer, songwriter and rapper. He has played at Australian festivals and events including: Spilt Milk and Groovin The Moo. Larry signed a deal with Sony Music Australia in 2018. His song "Late Nights" was streamed 8.5 million times and was one of the top 30 songs played Triple J in 2017, and received the Gold certification from ARIA in 2018.

Annika Schmarsel known by her stage name Alice Ivy, is an Australian electronic musician and producer. Alice Ivy was the winner of the 2016 Triple J Unearthed Listen Out competition. She released her debut studio album I'm Dreaming in 2018; her second, Don't Sleep, was released in 2020.

Coda Conduct are an Australian hip hop duo consisting of Sally Coleman and Erica Mallett. In addition to performing as Coda Conduct, the two are known as Sally & Erica, presenters of the breakfast show program on national radio station Triple J.
