Numerous current and former law firms are considered notable. Law firms are typically ranked by profit per partner, or at a more general level, revenue. Some private directories also assign subjective rankings to law firms, including Chambers and Partners and The Legal 500, although these are falling out of favour. [1]

Founded in 1900 by Richard Venable in Baltimore, Venable operates 13 offices across the United States and employs about 850 professionals specializing in regulatory, litigation, corporate, and investigations matters.

It was formed on 1 October 2012 by a merger between the United Kingdom-based Herbert Smith, then a member of the Silver Circle of leading UK law firms, and Freehills, one of the Big Six Australian law firms.
