The Lithuanian Baseball Association (Lithuanian : Lietuvos beisbolo asociacija) is the national governing body of baseball in Lithuania. The association was established in 1987 and joined the International Baseball Federation and the Confederation of European Baseball (today WBSC Europe) in 1991. [2]

The Lithuanian Baseball Association is responsible for the national baseball team, the coed national Baseball5 team and overseeing the Lithuanian Baseball League.

History

Baseball was introduced in Lithuania by Lithuanian American pilot Steponas Darius in 1922, after returning from the United States. [3] [4] The first season of the Lithuanian Baseball League took place that same year and LFLS Kaunas were crowned champions. The second season of the league did not happen until 1988.

Lithuania's baseball team has never qualified for any major tournament. Whereas the national Baseball5 team is the current European runner-up after losing the inaugural Baseball5 European Championship against France. [5]

In 2017, Dovydas Neverauskas became the first Lithuanian to play in the Major League Baseball, doing so with the Pittsburgh Pirates. [6]

The teams of the member nations of the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC), baseball's world governing body, are ranked based on their tournament results with the most successful teams being ranked highest. A point system is used, with points being awarded based on the results of WBSC-recognized international tournaments. Under the existing system, rankings are based on a team's performance over the last four years, with major international tournaments awarded a higher weighting compared to minor international and continental tournaments.

World Baseball Softball Confederation is the world governing body for the sports of baseball, softball, and Baseball5. It was established in 2013 by the merger of the International Baseball Federation (IBAF) and International Softball Federation (ISF), the former world governing bodies for baseball and softball, respectively. Under WBSC's organizational structure, IBAF and ISF now serve as the Baseball Division and Softball Division of WBSC. Each division is governed by an executive committee, while the WBSC is governed by an executive board.

The Lithuania women's national softball team is the national team of the Lithuania. It is governed by the Lietuvos beisbolo asociacija. Team coached by Romanas Paskočimas.

Dovydas Neverauskas is a Lithuanian professional baseball pitcher for the Spire City Ghost Hounds of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. He has previously played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and played in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp. He was the first player from Lithuania in MLB and NPB history.

The Baseball5 European Championship is the main championship tournament between national Baseball5 teams in Europe, governed by the WBSC Europe. The top two teams qualified for Baseball5 World Cup.

The 2020 Baseball5 European Championship was an international baseball5 tournament organized by the WBSC Europe. The championship was held from 28 February to 1 March 2020, in Vilnius, Lithuania and was contested between 14 national teams.

The France national Baseball5 team represents France in international Baseball5 competitions. They are the current European champions.

2020 Lithuanian Baseball League was the 34th annual edition of the Lithuanian Baseball League, organised by the Lithuanian Baseball Association. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Lithuania, only four teams participated in the championships, in comparison to usual 12 teams format. The finals were played on 12-13 September 2020.

The Baseball5 World Cup is a mixed-gender Baseball5 (B5) world championship that occurs every two years, with the first edition held in 2022 in Mexico and contested by 12 countries. It is governed by the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC).

The 2022 Baseball5 World Cup was the first edition of the Baseball5 World Cup, the mixed-gender Baseball5 (B5) world championship organized by the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC). It was held in Mexico City from 7 to 12 November 2022. Twelve teams took part.
