Los Lichis [1] is a Mexican free-rock group founded in 1996 and based in Monterrey and Mexico City. The band first worked as a multimedia concept art collective but later moved to musical improvisations with a Lo-fi sound. In 2000, French composer Jean Baptiste Favory joined the group. [2] The band has also performed under aliases, such as "Cacaflies" and "Chavilocos & The Butchers Filarmonika".
In 1996, three visual artists, Manuel Mathar, [3] Gerardo Monsivais, [3] and José-Luis Rojas, [1] met one another at the University of Monterrey in Mexico and started playing any musical instrument that was around. They developed a series of artistic practices as a form of social interaction among friends. They developed their ideas through multiple art forms such as music, drawing, painting, photo, video, installation and performances. There is a large number of recordings of their musical improvisations using Lo-fi instruments. The band name, “Lichis”, is a Mexican slang reference of a skinny stray dog, who fleetingly visited them one rainy night in their apartment. "Lichis" then became an aesthetic symbol, in their own idiosyncrasy, of a low and precarious form of life.
Los Lichis collective [1] showed their projects in some of the most important alternative art venues of the late '90s in Mexico (La Panadería, X-Teresa Arte Actual, BF15 Gallery). Their art is an act of freedom with a strong dose of bizarre humor, playing with the role of an author, not showing up as protagonists, and letting the work develop under external and unpredictable circumstances. During their first music performances, the band was improvising for hours in a closed room, separated from the audience. This way, the group was able to keep the amusement and freshness of a private music rehearsal. Los Lichis is not a conventional band playing in local rock venues, and thus, their appearances were mostly in public cultural spaces.
The relationship Los Lichis had with the former French-Mexican gallery BF 15, carried Monsiváis and Mathar to show their work at Paris's International Contemporary Art Fair (FIAC) in 2000. [4] It was there that they met the experimental musician Jean-Baptiste Favory [1] for improvisations, as part of the exhibition in their booth during the fair. They also broadcast a live performance through Epsilonia, an experimental music program ran by Favory in Radio Libertaire. Jean-Baptiste then became the fourth member, enriching the group's musical baggage. In 2003, they played at Sonic Protest festival in Paris.
The first decade of the 21st century began with a progressive break in the artistic production of the group. This was in part due to the growing commitment of each member with their individual projects, but also because of the disappointment and boredom they felt about the contemporary art circuit.
Despite this, and a temporary recess of Jose-Luis, their musical practice continued giving birth to more complex experiments. This was reinforced with the collaboration of guitarist Alfonso Gutiérrez (1974 – 2007), drummer Gildardo Gonzalez, and graphic artist Sergio de Osio. In Osio's workshop, many Lichis’ flyers, posters, T-shirts, and CDs were printed. Occasionally, they appeared under different names, such as "Cacaflies" or "Chavilocos & The Butchers Filarmonika". The band varied in a wide range of influences including psychedelic, krautrock, punk, avant-garde, free-jazz, folk or electronic music.
By the end of 2009, they returned to the original line-up, reincorporating Jose-Luis Rojas (1975 - 2017) and working on a compilation project on their own that concluded in the summer of 2013 with a double LP 12" Dog, compounding the first ten years of the group in 90 minutes. In 2015, they released a new limited edition CD entitled "The Giant Lichis". Both of these albums have been positively reviewed by music critic Byron Coley in British Magazine, The Wire. Also in 2015, the U.S. based label Feeding Tube Records, owned by Coley, re-released 500 copies of “Dog” distributed worldwide by Forced Exposure. Los Lichis is regarded as one of the most important underground acts in Mexico.

Mars were an American, New York City-based no wave experimental noise rock band, formed in 1975 when China Burg and artist Nancy Arlen (drums) brought Mark Cunningham (bass) and vocalist Sumner Crane together to talk about music. They were joined briefly by guitarist Rudolph Grey of Red Transistor. The band played one live gig under the name China before changing it to Mars. They played a mixture of angular compositions and freeform noise music jams, featuring surrealist lyrics and non-standard drumming. All the members were said to be completely untrained in music before forming the band.

Los Ángeles Negros are a Chilean pop ballad band formed in San Carlos de Chile in 1968. The band's best-known line-up consisted of singer Germaín de la Fuente, guitarist Mario Gutiérrez, keyboardist Jorge González, bassist Miguel Ángel "Nano" Concha, and drummer Luis Ortiz. Their music is a blend of boleros, psychedelic funk and rock music, known as Balada rockmántica.
The Festival Rock y Ruedas de Avándaro was a historic Mexican rock festival held on September 11–12, 1971, on the shores of Lake Avándaro near the Avándaro Golf Club, in a hamlet called Tenantongo, near the town of Valle de Bravo in the central State of Mexico. The festival, organized by brothers Eduardo and Alfonso Lopez Negrete's company Promotora Go, McCann Erickson executive and sports promoter Justino Compean and Telesistema Mexicano producer Luis de Llano Macedo, took place at the height of La Onda and celebrated life, youth, ecology, music, peace and free love, has been compared to the American Woodstock festival for its psychedelic music, counterculture imagery and artwork, and open drug use. A milestone in the history of Mexican rock music, the festival has drawn anywhere from an estimated 100,000 to 500,000 concertgoers.

Julián Bonequi is a Mexican artist working mostly with Noise and Improvisation and 3d computer graphics. He plays the drums, and experiments with electronics and voice to create a rhythmic environment much richer in atmospheres and harmonic flow situations. MTV Unplugged (1996) is the twenty-third album and sixth live album by Mexican rock and blues band El Tri. Recorded 10 years earlier the album was released as one more compilation.
Hector Garcia Cobo was a Mexican photographer and photojournalist who had a sixty-year career chronicling Mexico's social classes, Mexico City and various events of the 20th century, such as the 1968 student uprising. He was born poor but discovered photography in his teens and early 20s, deciding to study it seriously after his attempt to photograph the death of a coworker failed. He was sent to the Academia Mexicana de Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas by magazine director Edmundo Valdés who recognized García's talent. Most of García's career was related to photojournalism, working with publications both inside and outside of Mexico. However, a substantial amount of his work had more artistic and critical qualities. Many of these were exhibited in galleries and museums, with sixty five individual exhibitions during his lifetime. This not only included portraits of artists and intellectuals but also portraits of common and poor people. He was also the first photojournalist to explicitly criticize Mexico's elite, either making fun of them or contrasting them to the very poor.
Jorge Verdín, known professionally as Clorofila, was one of the pioneers of the Nortec (norteño-techno) musical style that originated in Tijuana, Mexico. Clorofila first came to prominence as a member of Tijuana-based music project Nortec Collective, a group formed by various individual producers and performers. He participated on both Nortec Collective albums under his Nortec identity Clorofila. After the break-up of the collective, Verdín recorded and released two solo albums as Clorofila and two as Tremolo Audio, and co-wrote and co-produced an album of atmospheric post-rock with José Luis Martín under the name Observador. Verdín also created music for theatre and sound design under his name.
José M. Bayro Corrochano is a plastic artist Bolivian and nationalised Mexican that produces oil paintings, sculptures and engraving. It is known by his monumental works La pareja del Trompo and El Hombre Azul
Gabino Palomares Gómez is a Mexican singer-songwriter and a social and political activist. He is one of the main exponents of the nueva canción movement in Latin America, and one of the founders of the canto nuevo movement in Mexico, alongside Amparo Ochoa, Óscar Chávez, and the group Los Folkloristas. He is the author of "La maldición de Malinche", one of the most prominent songs of the movement, and of more than a hundred songs covering social, political, and love themes.
José Luis Paredes Pacho is a Mexican musician, researcher, writer and cultural advocate. He is the founder of the new cycle of Poesía en voz alta Mexican poetry festival, Radical Mestizo's Festival de Mexico music program and founder member of Maldita Vecindad y los Hijos del Quinto Patio where he was drummer during 18 years. He is one of the researchers about Rock music in Mexico and counterculture movements in the country.

Guillermo Tovar de Teresa was a Mexican historian and an art collector, bibliographer, philanthropist, cultural promoter, and scholar. He was a constant defender of the historical and artistic Mexican heritage, mainly from his hometown, of which he was chronicler, an appointment that was originally in charge of the Presidency and to which he resigned to propose the creation of the Council of the Chronicle of the City of Mexico. He was a specialist in the New Spain/Mexican colonial period art, history and literature. He published several books about Colonial Mexican art and collaborated, among others, for the newspaper La Jornada. He stood out for his early intelligence: he learned to read long before entering school, and at age 13 he was advisor to colonial art of the then president Gustavo Díaz Ordaz. At 23, he published his first book, Renaissance painting and sculpture in Mexico. He was a member of the Historical Center Executive Committee, corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, in Madrid, and honorary member of the Hispanic Society of America, the latter based in New York City. He was considered a candidate for the Aesthetic Research Institute of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, but never wanted to hold a public office or receive any salary. One of his brothers, Rafael Tovar y de Teresa, was since 2012 the head of National Council for Culture and the Arts and first secretary of Culture. His house became, in December 2018, a museum, and is part of the Soumaya Museum.
Such Is My Country is a 1937 Mexican comedy film directed by Arcady Boytler and starring Antonio R. Frausto, Mercedes Soler, Juan José Martínez Casado, Manuel Medel, and Mario Moreno, better known by the stage name Cantinflas. It was the first film to feature Cantinflas in a prominent role and the first of Cantinflas's films together with Medel as a team.
