Louise Lawson (1861 [1] - April 5, 1899) [2] was a Neoclassical sculptor and one of the first American women sculptors to have a professional career.
Louise Lawson was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of L. M. Lawson, dean of the Medical College of Ohio. [3] [4] Her mother died when she was young, and her father educated her himself instead of sending her to school. [3] She developed her interest in art early and got her art training at the Art Academy of Cincinnati with Louis Rebisso and Thomas Satterwhite Noble and then in New York at Cooper Union and with sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward. [3] [5] [6] She then went abroad for three years of study in Paris with Auguste Rodin, on whose advice she went to Rome and Perugia for a further three years of study. [3] [5] [6] Her first known work, Il Pastore, was made in Rome. [6]
On her return to the United States in the late 1880s, Lawson opened a sculpture studio in New York. [3] With exhibitions and commissions beginning in the 1880s, she was one of the first American women sculptors to have a professional career. [7] She worked in a Neoclassical style in both marble and bronze, and her sculpture was often compared to that of Harriet Hosmer, who also studied in Rome. [5] [8] Her career was truncated as she was still in her 30s when she died.
Her best-known work is an 1891 bronze memorial sculpture of Congressman Samuel S. Cox. Originally placed near his home on the Lower East Side, it now stands in Tompkins Square Park. [7] [9] It depicts Cox orating and has been criticized as a poor likeness. [9]
Two of her marble pieces have literary origins: Ayacanora is a life-size statue of the Indian heroine of Charles Kingsley's 1855 novel Westward Ho! , while The Origin of the Harp refers to a poem of the same title by the Irish poet Thomas Moore. [8] Another marble work, The Rhodian Boy is an homage to Classical sculpture.
In 1886, one of her marble sculptures, The Shepherd, was ruined when the ship bringing it from Italy to the United States, the French steamship Burgundia, sank after a collision with the Italian man-of-war Italia in the Bay of Naples. [8]
A bronze relief of a fencer was installed at the New York Athletic Club in 1890. [10]
A caryatid is a sculpted female figure serving as an architectural support taking the place of a column or a pillar supporting an entablature on her head. The Greek term karyatides literally means "maidens of Karyai", an ancient town on the Peloponnese. Karyai had a temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis in her aspect of Artemis Karyatis: "As Karyatis she rejoiced in the dances of the nut-tree village of Karyai, those Karyatides, who in their ecstatic round-dance carried on their heads baskets of live reeds, as if they were dancing plants".
Louise Joséphine Bourgeois was a French-American artist. Although she is best known for her large-scale sculpture and installation art, Bourgeois was also a prolific painter and printmaker. She explored a variety of themes over the course of her long career including domesticity and the family, sexuality and the body, as well as death and the unconscious. These themes connect to events from her childhood which she considered to be a therapeutic process. Although Bourgeois exhibited with the abstract expressionists and her work has much in common with Surrealism and feminist art, she was not formally affiliated with a particular artistic movement.
Hiram Powers was an American neoclassical sculptor. He was one of the first 19th-century American artists to gain an international reputation, largely based on his famous marble sculpture The Greek Slave.
Harriet Goodhue Hosmer was a neoclassical sculptor, considered the most distinguished female sculptor in America during the 19th century. She is known as the first female professional sculptor. Among other technical innovations, she pioneered a process for turning limestone into marble. Hosmer once lived in an expatriate colony in Rome, befriending many prominent writers and artists.
Mary Edmonia Lewis, also known as "Wildfire", was an American sculptor.
Charles Henry Niehaus was an American sculptor.
Randolph Rogers was an American Neoclassical sculptor. An expatriate who lived most of his life in Italy, his works ranged from popular subjects to major commissions, including the Columbus Doors at the U.S. Capitol and American Civil War monuments.
Bessie Potter Vonnoh was an American sculptor best known for her small bronzes, mostly of domestic scenes, and for her garden fountains. Her stated artistic objective, as she told an interviewer in 1925, was to “look for beauty in the every-day world, to catch the joy and swing of modern American life.”

Eliza Pratt Greatorex was an Irish-born American artist who was affiliated with the Hudson River School. She is known for her landscape paintings as well as for several series of pen-and-ink drawings and etchings that were published in book form. She was the second woman to be elected an associate of the National Academy of Design, following Ann Hall.
William Henry Rinehart was a noted American sculptor. He is considered "the last important American sculptor to work in the classical style."
Anne Whitney was an American sculptor and poet. She made full-length and bust sculptures of prominent political and historical figures, and her works are in major museums in the United States. She received prestigious commissions for monuments. Two statues of Samuel Adams were made by Whitney and are located in Washington, D.C.'s National Statuary Hall Collection and in front of Faneuil Hall in Boston. She also created two monuments to Leif Erikson.
Chauncey Bradley Ives was an American sculptor who worked primarily in the Neo-classic style. His best known works are the marble statues of Jonathan Trumbull and Roger Sherman enshrined in the National Statuary Hall Collection.
Richard Henry Park was an American sculptor who worked in marble and bronze. He was commissioned to do work by the wealthy of the nineteenth century. He did a marble bust of John Plankinton, an astute businessman who founded the meat industry in Wisconsin and was "Milwaukee's foremost citizen."
Margaret E. Foley (1827–1877) was an American sculptor who worked in a Neoclassical style. In addition to sculpture, she is known for cameo carving, medallion portraits, and direct carving.
Frances Taft Grimes was an American sculptor, best remembered for her bas-relief portraits and busts.
William Walcutt was an American painter and sculptor, best remembered for the Perry Monument in Cleveland, Ohio.
Louisa Lander (1826–1923) was a member of the expatriate community of American women sculptors who settled in Rome in the mid-nineteenth century, led by Charlotte Cushman and Harriet Hosmer. Lander was ostracized from this community in 1859 due to a rumored personal scandal, and many of the details of her later life remain unknown.
Luise Clayborn Kaish was an American artist known for her work in sculpture, painting, and collage. Throughout her career, Kaish's work was exhibited and collected by major museums, including the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, the Jewish Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Kaish created monumental sculptures in bronze, aluminum, and stainless steel, which remain on view in educational, religious, and commercial settings across the United States and internationally.
Emma Marie Cadwalader-Guild, also spelled Cadwallader-Guild was an American sculptor and painter, notable for her portrait busts of figures such as President William McKinley, Andrew Carnegie, and George Frederick Watts, as well other sculptures. She worked primarily in marble and bronze, and her works were exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, the 1894 Paris Salon, the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, and the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, where she won a bronze medal. Cadwalader-Guild spent much of her career abroad and was particularly well known in England and Germany.
