The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences is a medical school affiliated with the University of Toledo, a public university located in Toledo, Ohio, United States. The College is located on the University of Toledo's Health Science Campus in south Toledo.

History

Founded in 1964 as the Medical College of Ohio (MCO), its first class of medical students began their studies in 1969. [1]

On March 31, 2006, Ohio Governor Bob Taft signed House Bill 478, which merged the University of Toledo with what was then known as the Medical University of Ohio (MUO), effective July 1, 2006. [2] [3]

Upon completion of the merger, the University of Toledo became the third largest member of the University System of Ohio in terms of operating budget, as well as one of only 17 public universities in the United States having colleges of business administration, education, engineering, law, medicine and pharmacy. Academic Affiliation

In 2016, The University of Toledo began an affiliation with Toledo-based health system ProMedica. The partnership establishes a 50-year affiliation between the College and the health system to "attract and retain good medical talent in Toledo." [5]

Sayed Amjad Hussain is a Pakistani-American cardiothoracic surgeon and writer from Maumee, Ohio. He invented two surgical devices – the pleuroperitoneal shunt and a special endotracheal tube. He was a member of Team Indus which covered the entire 2,000 miles of the river Indus in Pakistan from its source in Western Tibet. This trip was claimed to have been the third expedition in history to reach that site. The achievements of Team Indus were entered into Congressional Records of the U.S. Congress in June 1997. While on a humanitarian mission, he donated tons of supplies and equipment to the Dominican Republic, China and Pakistan. Also, his photographs have appeared on 35 magazine covers and in 8 calendars. Blair P. Grubb is an American physician, surgeon, researcher and scientist, currently a distinguished university professor of medicine and pediatrics at the University of Toledo. He is well known for his contributions to the study of syncope and disorders of the autonomic nervous system (3).

Darrick E. Antell, MD, F.A.C.S. is an American scientist, researcher, educator and plastic and reconstructive surgeon. As of 2023, he is Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He was the first in his field to use twins to document how faces can be affected by environmental factors like sun, stress, and smoking.

Nina Irene McClelland was an American chemist. She was dean emeritus and professor of chemistry at the University of Toledo.

Kurt McCammon is a Professor and the Devine Chair in Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School, where he has served as the Chairman for the Department of Urology since 2011, Program Director of the Department of Urology since 2006, and Fellowship Director for the Adult and Pediatric Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgery since 2010. Additionally, he is the past president of the Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons, on the board of the International Volunteers in Urology, and a current member of the American Urological Association Board of Directors. As a reconstructive urologist, McCammon surgically addresses urethral stricture disease, male urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, female urinary incontinence, genital abnormalities, and other genitourinary issues.
