Lucia Laura Sangenito (born 22 November 1910) is an Italian supercentenarian who has been the oldest living person in Italy since the death of Claudia Baccarini on 24 December 2024. [1] [2]
On 22 November 1910, Lucia Laura Sangenito-Abbondandolo was born in Sturno, Campania, Italy. [3] She has lived there her entire life. As a young woman, she worked in the fields. [1] [4] She got married on 2 February 1939 and had four children; two of them died as infants, and the other two are still living: her daughter Maria and son Michele. [5] Her interests are football, politics, [6] and watching religious programs on TV. [7]
She lost her home in the 1962 Irpinia earthquake and the house was rebuilt in a different location in 1970. She was widowed when her husband died at the age of 98 on 28 September 2010. [5] When she was 107, she had surgery for a fractured femur which was the result of a domestic accident. [1] [8] [7] She celebrated her 110th birthday in November 2020 quietly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On her 112th birthday, she was the oldest known living person in Campania, and the third-oldest validated living person in Italy, behind Domenica Ercolani-Cristoforo and Claudia Baccarini-Baldi. On 1 June 2024, she was visited by LongeviQuest, one of the top age validation organizations, who gave her a certificate recognizing her for being (at the time) the 2nd oldest living person in Italy. [9] She is the oldest person ever from the Campania region of Italy. [3] [6]
