Lynn R. Nakamoto (born May 24,1960) is an American judge who is a former justice of the Oregon Supreme Court. She was appointed to the court by Governor Kate Brown,and previously served on the Oregon Court of Appeals from 2011 to 2016.
Nakamoto was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Orange County,California. Nakamoto,who is the first member of her family to graduate college,received a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy with honors from Wellesley College in 1982. She then earned her Juris Doctor degree in 1985 at New York University School of Law. [1] [2]
From 1985 to 1987,she worked at Bronx Legal Services in New York City before moving to Oregon in 1987,when she became a staff attorney and acting director of Marion-Polk Legal Aid Service. In 1989,she joined Markowitz,Herbold,Glade &Mehlhaf,a Portland law firm focusing on business litigation,eventually becoming its managing shareholder. She worked there until her appointment to the bench in 2011. [2]
She served as vice chair of the Oregon Board of Bar Examiners in 2001 and chair of the Oregon State Bar's affirmative action committee in 2006.
The Oregon Asian Pacific American Bar Association (OAPABA) presents an award called the Lynn Nakamoto Award at its annual gala dinner. [3]
In 1989,Nakamoto had served as a summer clerk for United States District Judge Helen J. Frye.
In 2011,Governor Ted Kulongoski appointed Nakamoto to the Oregon Court of Appeals,to fill the seat created by Jack Landau's appointment to the Oregon Supreme Court. [4] She was elected unopposed to a six-year term at the 2012 election.
In 2015,Governor Kate Brown named Nakamoto to the Oregon Supreme Court,to fill the vacancy created by Virginia Linder's retirement. Nakamoto is of Japanese descent, [5] and her appointment made her the first Asian American to serve on the supreme court. [1] Nakamoto retired from the court on December 31,2021. [6]
Nakamoto was a founding member of the Oregon Minority Lawyers Association and sat on the board of the Q Center,an LGBT community center in North Portland. [4]
Nakamoto is a lesbian. [7] As of 2021,she was one of twelve openly LGBT state supreme court justices serving in the United States. Nakamoto and her partner have a daughter named Eleanor adopted from Vietnam. [8]
Dorothy Comstock Riley was a lawyer and judge from the U.S. state of Michigan,serving on the Michigan Supreme Court and the first woman to serve on the Michigan Court of Appeals. She was the first Hispanic woman to be elected to the Supreme Court of any state.
Peggy Ann Quince is a former justice of the Supreme Court of Florida,having previously served as chief justice from July 1,2008,until June 30,2010. Quince was the second African American and third woman to serve as chief justice. She had been a justice of the Court since 1999,and was the first African-American woman to sit on the state's highest Court and the third female Justice. From 1993 to 1997,she served as a judge on Florida's Second District Court of Appeal. On July 1,2008,Quince assumed the office of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Florida for two years,the first African-American woman to head any branch of Florida government.
Rives Kistler is an American attorney and judge in the state of Oregon. After college and law school on the East Coast,he moved to Oregon where he worked in private practice before joining the Oregon Department of Justice. Kistler then joined the Oregon Court of Appeals before appointment to the Oregon Supreme Court in 2003.
Virginia Lynn Linder is an American judge from Oregon who served as the 99th justice of the Oregon Supreme Court from January 2007 until January 2016. She served on the Oregon Court of Appeals from 1997 until her election to the state's Supreme Court in the 2006,an electoral campaign in which she defeated former Labor Commissioner and Republican gubernatorial candidate Jack Roberts.
Wallace McCamant was an American jurist in Oregon. A Pennsylvania native,he served as the 46th justice of the Oregon Supreme Court from 1917 to 1918. Later he served briefly as a United States circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. As a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1920,McCamant surprised the GOP leadership by placing the name of Calvin Coolidge into nomination for Vice-President. Coolidge would become the 30th President of the United States upon the death of President Harding in 1923.
Betty Cantrell Roberts was an American politician and judge from the U.S. state of Oregon. She was the 83rd justice of the Oregon Supreme Court. She was the first woman to serve on the Oregon Supreme Court,and had also been the first woman on the Oregon Court of Appeals. Roberts served from 1982 to 1986 on the high court and from 1977 to 1982 on the Court of Appeals.
